The chairman and CEO of Starbucks, has controversially admitted that the best way to make a cup of coffee - is not his brand's way. Howard Schultz says he uses a Bodum French press - a coffee presser brand - which results in 'the best cup of coffee known to mankind.'

It’s less but not 90% less.

I grind fresh beans to *Turkish Grind* (baby powder texture) and brew mine in this Chemex System:

Nothing else even comes close to the flavor!

When I get up I want it made and ready. Me want coffee...me want NOW.

STBX does sell flavored coffees, are you taking about the syrups you can get?
Adding syrup to coffee really isn’t a cup of coffee but instead a coffee drink.

A refill is 50-75 cents for that same 20 oz cup.

Oh stop it - it's more fun when people compare the cheapest coffee available in a diner with the most expensive item available at Starbucks...

If you pay with a registered Starbucks card, your drip coffee refills are free.

>>>I admit I am not a fine connoisseur of coffee but I have never liked any cup of coffee from Starbucks.

Because they burn their beans.

********************

“Charbucks” as someone cruelly branded them. They burn their beans because they have compromised the quality of their coffee. Very dark roasts hide a mediocre coffee’s weakness because it adds a rich toasted flavor without really losing anything. A coffee buyer and cupper I know described their coffee as ‘high end mediocre’, which is a fairly objective summary.

When Starbuck’s started out they really did offer top notch specialty coffees, as do many independent roasters and coffee shops. This is usually defined as the top 3% or so of coffees, for distinctive, complex and pleasantly flavorful profiles. When they became the mass market McDonald’s of coffee shops however, sheer volume combined with the corporate obsession with consistency meant they -had- to move their coffee towards a more average, more generic blend. No way around it, really, and they’ve done what they could, but their decision was for quantity over quality.

For a truly outstanding cup of specialty coffee, go to a small scale independent shop, preferably a roaster - and do indeed get a French press or other single cup style of preparation of a single origin coffee, *IF* you like coffee. Most people want sugared confections that simulate cocoa rather than a really good cup of black coffee, which is another way to hide second tier (or worse) coffees.

Don’t be surprised to pay over $3 - 5 for a cup or press pot of good stuff. Average prices only pay for average coffees. Its just that simple.

Not in my (or Jackie’s) part of the country. Small starts over $2.

On an old episode of “Rawhide”, Rowdy Yates explained how to make a good cup of coffee:

“You boil water. You throw some coffee in. Wait a little, then throw in a horseshoe. If it doesn’t float, you add coffee until it does...”

Where the heck do you live.
The is the small, grande, and venti I have never seen a venti over $2.10, which is not a bad price for 20oz.
Go to a restaurant and they charge $3-3.50 for a 6 oz cup and you have to pester them for refills.

“Every starbucks flavor is, IMO ... burnt.”

Their new rollout is for their ‘blonde roast’, because they have felt the sting of this criticism. I hope the term doesn’t take off like ‘frappacino’ did. Roasting terminologies are muddled enough: “Viennese”, “Full City”, “Italian” “Light Medium”, “Agtron” (ugh!).

What I find interesting is how many complain about how bad STBX is and still go and they actually have know idea how STBX roasts their coffee beans, where they come from or the process of brewing.

The guy we met at the Mountain Thunder plantation said the same thing about the french press. When I told my mother about the coffee there, she said it must have been a french press.

STBX does not serve swill, they serve coffee you don’t like.
I find fascinating that as much as you dislike STBX it appears you still go there to get cups of the swill.

“Personally I think most Americans don’t know how to brew a good cup of coffee, they use to few beans in ratio to water.”

Yes! Usually a combination of a too old, weak coffee blend which is then made into a weak brew.

The only way that I have ever made coffee is with my French Press, but that’s because it’s small, easy clean up, and doesn’t take up counter space.

Last month a friend was over and I made her a cup. She started raving about the flavour of my coffee and that she had never had anything so delicious.

French Press, baby, French Press.

I had no idea that it made such an incredible difference.
