Further detail :

Man says Craigslist ad led him to Vegas heist

********************EXCERPT***********************

Police say Belton was nabbed attempting to take $115,000 worth of chips at the Bellagio resort Saturday night.

A judge scheduled the June 6 hearing to decide whether evidence is sufficient to send the case to state court for trial.

Belton's public defender, Jeremy Storms, declined comment Wednesday.

Police were still looking for two men in the caper, Officer Jose Hernandez said.

Belton said one placed an online advertisement for a job repossessing cars in Las Vegas. Police think that man, using the name Carlos Rodriguez, also rented Belton a hotel room at the Mandalay Bay resort several blocks away on the Las Vegas Strip.

The other man, who Belton said also used the name Carlos, escaped after witnesses say he pepper sprayed a blackjack dealer.

It's sad that the crook couldn't even operate pepper spray correctly for nearly a minute. I don't think the next Oceans 11 remake will have them hiring off Craigslist. Although this guy sounds like the seventh hire in the Seven Samuri.

Stupid criminals are good for the economy.

If they were smart, we’d need twice as many cops.

The last robber to make off with casino chips from the Bellagio, in December 2010, was sentenced to three to 11 years in state prison for armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. Anthony Michael Carleo wore a motorcycle helmet as he waved a gun and made off with $1.5 million worth of high-value chips. He was arrested trying to redeem a $25,000 chip
Note to high-value chip thieves:

These chips are only a kind of a marker, and the casino generally knows who buys these markers, how many they win and lose, and how many are expected to be redeemed.

And it's all on camera. All the time.

Idiots.

I was in Vegas for a trade show. While I was having breakfast with my business partner, I mentioned to him that I didn't know how Keno works. Within 2 minutes, a lady shows up and asks if I have any questions on how Keno works.

I did the same thing the next day, and same thing happens. I don't know if they have voice recognition mikes in the booths, but it sure seems that way.

What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but I don't think anything is private. Anything, anywhere. Scary.

That is a bizarre story. And totally believable.

BTW, I read once that Keno odds/payoffs are worse than state lotteries.

Great Keno story. Two guys cracked the algorithm at one of the hotels, so they could pretty much predict the numbers after observing dozens of games. So, one guy with a laptop in the hotel room, the other downstairs receiving the numbers and placing the bet.

Well, they hit something like 20 numbers, which paid out an ungodly sum. Of course, the hotel knew something was up because the odds of hitting 20 numbers is in the quintillions, and they found the computer setup in the room the next day.

Of course, you’d think two guys smart enough to crack the algorithm would be smart enough to play 4-6 numbers a few times a day and clean up.

Do you have a link? I’d like to read the story of how they cracked the random number generator enough to discern a pattern.

I know it’s only pseudo-random, but I’m sure it’s beyond the ability of your common garden-variety hacker.

Anyway, your conclusion is correct. They were smart on the code but lacked street smarts. They flashed a big red light right on their sorry butts.

Well we know the link between street smart and book smart is common sense and you may get by with #1 and #3 or #2 and #3 but if you don’t have #3 you may as well wrap it up.

Of course, back in the day, a couple of gorillas would have hauled one of them in a back room, busted up a couple of knees and removed some extremeties before sending him back to show his compadres the evil of their ways.

Then they would ‘eliminate’ the entire crowd.

I saw the story on one of those crime shows a few years back. I’ll look for the story online.

I’m skeptical. I’ve never seen a Keno game in Reno or Vegas that was based on a computer algorithm instead of real ping-pong balls being blown around.
