“Hotel California”... like the “Roach Motel”. Yep.

Yes, they’ll continue to keep and re-sell your info, but at least it’s not publicly accessible, anymore. And you can easily delete their “following cookies”, like Google puts on to your system, from your HD, so you can get rid of their tracking devices and nagging ads on visited web pages.

I’ve been using opera since back when we had to pay for it and it fit on a floppy disk.

Opera has their own “facebook” type community called “My Opera” - might be attractive to facebook.

I just downloaded version 12. beta.

It may be the last.

...and if it opera-ates (sorry) like FBook did today with that STUPID error message then it will go down like the IPO...

I’ve disabled “My Opera” on v11.64 and numerous previous versions, since I hate that social networking-gabby-gossip crap. How is v12 beta? Buggy? That one, if it gets out of beta test, may be my last one, too.

“I’ve disabled “My Opera” on v11.64 and numerous previous versions...”

Correction:

It was on v11.62 - Speed Dial, right-click, Appearance, Panels, Toolbars - but “My Opera” is now not a box to be unchecked on either screen option in the current v11.64 browser. Darnit. It appears under the Toolbar’s “Help”. I just won’t get involved. I also used “Tools”, Advanced, Cookies and removed their stuff, in case it was tracking etc.

Nah. App versus browser is a rehash of a fight that has already been played.

AOL couldn’t keep people roped into their internet with training wheels over time no matter how many coasters they sent out in the mail. It was easier for older people to learn on, they just didn’t stay in their unlearned state.

Similarly, Apps help for viewing web content be it shopping or discussion or what have you when you are on a phone or on a tablet with very limited processing capacity...but they are annoying as all get out once you move to a more capable device.

I was downloading it I was posting to FR.

v 12 is seems faster. easily imported existing opera bookmarks and passwords. ( wonder why they didn't change the password algorithm)

It's called “Opera Next” ( I believe “Next” is only used for opera beta versions).

They no longer install “Unite” “Widgets” “Voice” on a new install - discontinued.( It will probably still be there if v 12 is installed as an upgrade)

plug-ins are now handled as a separate system process ( like Chrome)

changing “themes” is a breeze

They are using your Graphics card features for acceleration.
I don't play games, so I wont be trying this out.

>>IMHO, it would be cheaper and a lot faster to make and promote add-ins for IE, Firefox, Chrome, etc.<<

Add ins — the primary carriers of viruses...

It would be too bad. I have enjoyed using Opera for years, along with the Mozilla browsers. If FB acquires it I, at least, will refuse upgrades or just delete it. By the way how does one block Google?

In your Opera’s toolbar, go to Tools/Advanced/Cookies, scroll thru all of the entries, and delete *everything* related to Google/Chrome etc. Many of the condensed [+] cookies need to be opened so you can delete each entry, or some might survive. In recent Opera versions, deleting the main entry does it; older versions required deleting all entries under the [+]. It changes to open when you see [-].

Keep scrolling and delete all of the various website entries for Google/Chrome etc, too. You’ll be stunned at what’s in that Cookies drop-down menu.

What version are you using? It’s in the toolbar under Help/ About.

Hmmmm, I went to Help/Check for Updates and it says I have the latest version at v11.64. I can’t find a place to get v12. It’s still got Widgets and Unite in v11.64, so maybe I’m not signed-up to get beta versions. I don’t remember any “Next” versions over the past years either. Changing themes is fast: it d/lds and installs immediately in this version, too.

Chrome is by far the best, fastest and most stable, but I am way of it because I know Eric Schmidt thinks we are not entitled to any privacy. Opera is good too. But none of this will save Facebook. They will go the way of MySpace within 5 years.
