Dogs are more valuable than children, according to state law

If I took my dog, and placed him unrestrained in the backseat of my car, this is what would happen: He’d stand at the window and whimper until I opened it. I’d open it a crack or all the way, he wouldn’t care. He’d stick his nose out or his head out, depending on how much window I gave him. I could drive from here to California and that would be that.

Is this safe for the dog? Well, probably not the safest thing. Having him securely fastened would be the safest thing. Also the best thing for me too, as it would automatically dismiss the notion he might try and jump into the front seat. The state of New Jersey agrees with me on the “not the safest thing” front and under a 1996 state law against animal cruelty, I could be in for some hefty fines if ol’ Sparky is unrestrained. Minimum of $250, up to $1,000, and the possibility of being charged with a disorderly persons offense, which would just jack up the cost even more. The law, as written, states someone cannot “carry a living animal or creature in or upon a vehicle or otherwise, in a cruel or inhumane manner.”

You don’t have to send dogs to college. On the other hand; you can’t claim them on your taxes.

I saw a dog jump out of the bed of a moving pick up because a dog standing in his own yard barked at the truck. It didn’t kill the dog but he was in shock after he hit the road.

Who loves you more, your dog or your wife? To find out lock each one in the trunk of your car for an hour and then see which one is more happy to see you when you open it up.

LOL daffy, if the cop was smart he'd leave you and your 4 legged lab alone. I wouldn't want you getting mad at me...GG He is a beauty, but it looks like you have to be a friggin genius to put that on a dog, especially if he's excited and drooling all over the back seat....

But you'd get a chance to use all the cuss words you know trying......:O)

Ya know.... that's dangerous advice, it certainly would have been with any of my 3 exes.

Besides the fact that 2 of my 3 exes and at least one of the dogs could have escaped and hunted me down.

We're polite for a reason. Being impolite may be dangerous. ;)

I fault Romney with a lot, and won't be voting for him... but that brouhaha over Rover was stupid.

I'm with him on putting the dog on the roof of the car and running down the road.

I've put the catz in carriers and driven 600 miles with them in the back of a truck.

They were fine.

“Thankfully” we have child-restraint laws? (Since ‘83, NJ? Geeeesh. Thank God I grew up without all these stupid asinine life-sucking rules.) That enrich Evil Companies(TM) like Graco and Evenflo with guaranteed income?

I think it’s ludicrous that PA passed a pet-restraint law a few years ago. I have a harness for my dog to use up there. But she’s definitely not a distraction; she’s as good as can be. In her case, it’d be more for a crash, but only because I don’t want PA coming after us.

I hate having to strap my son in. I like the convenience for a baby, who can’t do anything to help himself if I’m alone. But my toddler is capable of sitting up and doing things for himself. He also, like my dog, gets discipline so would know not to be bouncing off the walls like that.

That’s a vest. My pure harness takes a genius. Worst of all is the way they situated a loop for typing into these damned shoulder-always belts. On top of the dog, and it’s about impossible to do that without forcing the dog into a down. Which makes the “freedom of movement” claim a joke. My dog hates it and acts severely wounded when she’s in the car with it. It’s unnerving driving like that for 2 hrs. You’d think she was starting to die and wonder why there’s no noise at all.

I always use a short leash, handle through middle seat belt to restrain the dog in the back seat. He can sit, stand, lie down either way, walk to either side, but cannot decide he likes the front seat better.

I don't know how he would take to the safety harness thing, but at least I know he can't be on my lap and will stay put in case of an accident.

Cute driving commercial Hooman passenger in back has his seat belt on. All is good. Looks perfectly legal to me.
