Thank you Barack Obama

I am a 62 year old engineer who is wheelchair bound. I just got laid off from my job, and I have applied to like 50 jobs so far with no success. I doubt I find one before the election because everyone is afraid to hire because of the uncertainty, and with Obamacare looming, I don't blame them. If Obama is re-elected I am afraid my goose is cooked along with millions of others in the same shape that I am. It's not my nature to seek handouts, so applying for disabilty, social security, etc. is not an option for me, as long as I know that I have the skills to perform a job well. All I can say is damn that. We must defeat Obama. There is no other choice.

I’ll do all I can to remove this cad from office! Sadly, your situation is not isolated.

“Unemployment comp and social security are not handouts. You paid for them.”

You bet you paid for them. And you paid for Medicare and Medicaid. Add up all of those deductions from your paychecks over your lifetime, and you’ll see exactly how much you paid.

If you had a house fire or auto wreck you wouldn’t refuse the proceeds of the insurance you paid for in those cases, so you shouldn’t refuse the insurance proceeds you paid for in this case. And besides, most likely you lost your job in the first place due the deliberately destructive economic policies of the Obammunists, Progressives, and other assorted Communists. Don’t let them make you destitute as well.

Hell, with social security, you’ll probably never get back as much as you paid in anyway. Just think where you would be if you had been able to sock all of those social security payments into a private pension that benefited only you and yours, instead of having the federal government steal it from you.

Remember if you file for SS at 62, you will get the lowest payment, and that amount never goes up unless Congress approves COLAs. In other words, you can’t file at 62, withdraw at 63, and then refile at 68.

Obama is compassionate because the dispossessed say he is compassionate. That’s all that counts among the uninformed.

Have you tried getting your teaching certificate? Always need someone with real world experience at your high school or your community college nearby. May keep the wolves away from the door for awhile...

You should not ever have to work again, at least for someone else. You’ve paid your dues. Take the social security, unemployment and anything else the government offers. Then, create your own small part time business. Surely you have skills or you would not have been working all your life. I would bet you’ll be a lot happier than working for someone else. God Bless you.

The wheel chair should be no problem. We had an engineer who who worked with our company for many years. If his specialized van got out of whack several of the other engineers would go down and fix it.

you’ve paid big bucks into the coffers of the Social Security system - it’s your money, not a handout!

Right. I was laid off at 59, after 35 years with my employer and had 9 months before my pension would begin. It was lean times living on zero income until then.

Employer kept me listed as “unpaid leave of absence” until age 60 and full medical until age 65, when Medicare would kick in. That was done to avoid lawsuit.

I elected to take SS at 62, after over 40 years of paying into the scheme. ....Statistics and my own obversations of long-time co-workers indicated that people that try to hold off on SS until age 67 to get more $$ per month DON’T get back as much as those who go SS at 62, because they die sooner. ...........I’ll be 70 in August.

Your course of action should depend on your financial circumstances. If you need to begin generating revenue quickly then I suggest you start buying and selling on eBay and possibly on Craig's List (for local purchases of larger items where you won't be competing with those who would be shipping cross country). (If I started doing that tomorrow what I would choose to buy and see is collectible knives.)

You could also consider moving outside the profession. It might not pay as much, but it might be more interesting (somebody previously mentioned teaching - which is a good example).

If you have the luxury of time and want to stay very much in the profession then consider brokering projects to offshore engineering firms (I do a bit of this and always take a 15% commission). Also, you could write a book and publish it electronically on Amazon (I've personally purchased a couple of short 50-page technology books from Amazon lately that cover specialized topics).

One great cosmic truth, however, is that recessions are really murder for engineers in particular - and the concensus seems to be that we're in for a double dip recession.

The whole thing is a sham and they know it.
That’s why they exempted themselves.

good luck. It sucks out there. And yes - ABO.

Staying home and giving Ghettobama a second term like many here want to do is freaking insane.

Don’t let foolish pride stand in the way of getting something you’ve paid for, disability or social security.

Doesn’t matter. The extra 3 years (62 to 65) of benefits more than makes up for the penalty. Figure it up yourself using future worth vs present worth of annuities.

also, keep in mind the bankrupt state of the government. At some point in time they are going to start skimping on benefit payouts. It is a gamble, but there is a chance if you get in now, you will be better off than others who get in 5 years from now once they start throttling benefits down.

I’m still approx decades away from 65th birthday so i’m not the most educated on this matter. But didnt’ they rescind all cost of living raises associated with SS benefits the last few years?
