SAN JOSE -- Amid inspirational talk, chanted mantras and shouts of victory at a late-night firewalking event attended by thousands Thursday came agonized shrieks from followers whose soles were scorched by the superheated coals, witnesses said.

At least 21 people were treated for burn injuries after taking part in the crowning event of the first day of a Tony Robbins function downtown, including at least three who went to the hospital, a San Jose fire captain said.

The people who suffered various second- and third-degree burn injuries were among more than 6,000 who attended the motivational speaker's event at the San Jose Convention Center called "Unleash the Power Within."

Kinda reminds me of when I was a kid. Whenever my freinds and I got caught doing something dumb and/or potentially dangerous, my dear Mom would admonish me with these words of wisdom, “I suppose if your freinds jumped off the Empire State Bldg., YOU would have to jump off the Empire State Bldg!”

If the Darwin Awards had a AAA/Farm team, these people would be rising stars ready for the major league.

Like sleeping on a bed of nails, if done right there is no pain, but the margin of error is very very small.

Tony Robbins has had these firewalks for decades. Not sure why this hasn't happened before.

Supposedly the "trick" is that by the time the person walks on the coals, they're covered with ash, thus not so hot. I wonder if the fire tenders stoked the coals too much.

You’re also suppose to run across them fast, sort of like the candle trick...If you run your finger across a candle flame fast you don’t get burned. But in another article I read these geniuses walked across them slow, as if Robbins gave them magical powers to become fireproof. “Hmmm...wait a minute..I smell smoke! Like something is on fire! And that something is...ME! YAAAH!”

I heard Robbins on the radio recently.......as a "second stringer" to some other author

Also his voice sounded harsh and forced....

Seems to me he's on a down cycle.

Tony was pretty funny in 'Shallow Hal', especially the part where he was ready to go toe to toe with George Costanza and George backed down. I didn't know Tony was a rattlesnake/hot coals/miracle-healing kind of preacher. I figured he was the kind who lived in a van, down by the river.

People also have differing feet. Here in Houston my neighbor drinks a beer and walks around all evening (on the grass too) with bare feet. I don’t. I suspect that he could do much better walking over coals than I could.

After he settles the lawsuits, Mr. Robbins might want to take things like that into consideration next time, assuming that he even stays in business.

I’d like to see Tony pull his ‘cool moss’ stunt by walking on steel plates placed over a bed of hot coals. Simple physics at work here...put your hand into a hot oven and you’ll have no problem; grab the hot rack and see what happens.

It actually happens more often than one hears. Some folks don’t keep moving so they pick up embers. With as many people as were at this one it could well be that the ash got kicked loose by previous walkers.

I just think it is stupid as all get out to pay money for this kind of crap
