If a major emergency happened in the United States, do you have faith that the government would take care of you? Amazingly, even after all of the examples to the contrary that we have seen in recent years, a solid majority of all Americans actually believe that the government will be there for them when things hit the fan. According to a new survey conducted by the Adelphi University Center for Health Innovation, 55 percent of Americans believe that the authorities will come to their rescue when disaster strikes.
-44 percent of all Americans do not have first-aid kits in their homes.
-48 percent of all Americans do not have any emergency supplies stored up.
-53 percent of all Americans do not have a 3 day supply of nonperishable food and water in their homes.

I guess they didn’t use the AF for Katrina. I was stationed at Keesler (Biloxi) during Hurricane Camille. They had us on all kinds of off-base details afterwards, helping with cleanup, stocking supplies and donated stuff, etc.
I believe the government will take care of us.Like they would take care of any problem.
They haven't invested billions in concentration camps, guns and ammunition for nothing.
I would like to have a stash of precious metals. Especially as a way of preserving any extra wealth I might have after life sustaining prep needs are met.
But food, garden seeds, tools (including guns), ammo, clothing and equipment, toilet paper, etc. come first.
These items can not only meet our own needs, but their intrinsic value can make them better than money or gold in a serious SHTF scenario.
I think of the relative value to a hungry family of the last 50 pounds of beans as compared to 50 pounds of gold.

Can't say how I know but post Katrina when they were trying move people out of NOLA, they were throwing them on jets. Word had gotten around that most of NOLA was headed to Houston so that became THE place to go. A few of the plane loads went into revolt when it was announced that they were headed for any other city so the powers that be in DHS lied to every planeload that their destination was Houston until they were in the air. Then and only then was their real destination announced. The instant that they set foot upon that "free govmint airplane ride" they gave up control of their own life.
Quick side note: A Discovery channel show "Colony" from a few years back put a group of strangers together in a staged biological disaster. The scenario was that the govt sent this group to a place that was to be stocked with all of the basics. Of course it has next to nothing. This is shocking departure from most Discovery shows in that that show the colonists that the govt cannot help them when TSHTF. Yet at near the end of experiment when the colonists have fashioned a functioning way of life with what they have "the fake FEDS" send a car in with room for only two colonists to be moved to a "facility" that is supposedly decent. Only one black lady out of about ten remaining colonists would go with the FEDS. The others had seen the light and elected to stay with what they had built with their own hands.
Oh and BTW it is amazing that building is still in use. I was sure that it would need a good nuking after what went on in there.
I have such confidence in the government that I have a closet full of canned goods, a couple of hundred pounds of rice, pounds of salt and sugar, a safe full of guns and ammo, etc, etc. I am also on my last week of EMT school because I know the governemnt will be there if someone close to me has a medical problem during a catastrophe.
I was looking at them as barter items..
Me, I have a small stash of that stuff.
Food and other goods I am well stocked just because we buy in bulk and my wife is an extreme couponer..
Other barter items I know I’ll never run out of..
I can fix anything. I can drive anything. I am an electronics wiz. 2 way radios is no problem. I have a 400 gallon per day RO/DI filter with cases of filters. (left over from my fish store.. I still use it for my fish tank) although mainly pointless while on grid I have enough solar panels to create 15 amps of 110V when the sun it shining.
I can live off the land if I need to.
If the SHTF I have family with land far enough north of here to be safe. If it’s a big eff’n fan I can and will survive in the boundary waters.
be sure your seeds are not genetically modified.. many of those only last one season.

The standards here are appallingly low. This is not formal prepping, it’s basic life management. A first-aid kit in the home, at least some emergency supplies, a 3 day supply of nonperishable food and water in their homes? I had all three literally on the day I moved into my first shared apartment with a roommate - just in case of snow, storms, or other unexpected problems.
You were lucky to be in Mississippi. In New Orleans most of the cops deserted and the exalted mayor, Ray Nagin, watched all his school buses fill up with water rather than use them to evacuate citizens. I won't even start on what went on in the Super Dome. And how come nobody bothered to pull the city's disaster plan out of the file cabinet? Oh yeah, now I remember, they were already blaming it on George Bush after they had rebuffed his timely offer of assistance the day prior to Katrina making landfall.
