The new prepper often goes straight to the question, "Where would I go." and almost invariably answers that question with "to Walmart!" A better question to ask would be "Where would I meet?" It is hard to understand the difference at first. When we all start down this path of readiness, we often consider ourselves as either the lone wolf; traveling from place to place, surviving on the scraps of humanity, doing what is necessary to survive, or the leader of a group of survivors; single handedly keeping our friends and family alive, and restoring order to (at least a small piece) of a world in chaos. While this might be true, in some select few circumstances, overwhelmingly it will not be the case. For every leader of a group of fifty survivors, there must be forty-nine followers. If your goal is to be the leader, there is an entire set of leadership skills and personality requirements that the majority of people do not have. In this case, learning to be an effective leader is much more important than having a bug out bag, or an alpha site, and should be the primary focus of the new prepper's education.
The average, every day survivor may in fact be better served by asking the question, "What can I do that provides value to the group?" This question will help guide the new prepper, and help them to assess their strengths and weaknesses in a way that is not driven by ego and the stereotypes we all enjoy on our favorite zombie books and movies. If you are a leader, you will naturally and organically move into that position within a group, even if the group originally chooses a different person.

Preppers’ PING!!
Someone the other day described whats happening perfectly; they said its like being in a car wreck you are driving along you see a car coming at you hes not stopping for the red light theres no place for you to go you know for sure he is going to hit you and then everything slows down like a scene from some action movie the car coming seems to be crawling you can even see the surprise on the other drivers face. When he hits you the flying glass seems to hang in the air for a second and all the time there aint a damn thing you can do, but pray you survive.
Personally I we will see something much like the collapse of Argentina ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yerKMQc7-w&feature=grec_index )but on a global scale.
As far as the election either way it goes I believe we will soon see social unrest, the closer the election gets the more things will become like walking a mine field and a miss step and things can and will exploded.
Despite the CDCs tongue and cheek presentation for National Preparedness Month, there really are Zombies, just not the kind from George A. Romero films. They have been fed from the Governments stash and walked among us for years now and many have been caught on film, but it was in a movie it was for real:

These and many more like events show (Flash Mobs, OWS, etc) that we have a large entitlement minded population that is violent prone. I think that during a collapse you will see many small businesses wiped out by flash mob looting, and once started it will quickly spread to rape, robbery and murder for murder sake. You will see what I call pocket pogroms and if you aint Amish you better not be around when they come.
I am very much in agreement of the author of this article about what we can look forward to:
When The Music Stops How Americas Cities May Explode In Violence

Many of these zombies will think no more about killing you to get stuff than zombies in the lastest horror flick and do it just as gruesomely as any of the worse scenes in those same movies.
Many of you who have read my post know I often refer to this quote from Star Trek Deep Space Nine: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Siege of AR-558 (#7.8) (1998)
Quark: Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. Theyre a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon. You dont believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes.
It has repeated been shown throughout history that this is what happens to people once placed under such stressful conditions and yet you would be surprised how many people dont realize the transformations that can take place under such conditions. And because of their ignorance many wont even live long learn.
If you want to learn what happens I suggest you read some of Selcos firsthand experiences in Bosnia:

Clearly theres a storm coming, as great as a hurricane and like you do when a hurricane comes your way you either prepare to weather it or you become a victim of it.
For those who are just starting or are old hands at prepping you may find my Preparedness Manual helpfull. You can download it at:
http://tomeaker.com/kart/Preparedness1j.pdf
NOTE! THIS IS A FREE DOWNLOAD. I DO NOT MAKE ONE CENT OFF MY PREPAREDNESS MANUAL!
For those of you who havent started already its time to prepare almost past time maybe. You needed to be stocking up on food guns, ammo, basic household supplies like soap, papergoods, cleaning supplies, good sturdy clothes including extra socks, underwear and extra shoes and boots, a extra couple changes of oil and filters for your car, tools, things you buy everyday start buying two and put one up.
As the LDS say When the emergency is upon us the time for preparedness has past.
Or as the bible says: A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.
NIV Proverbs 22:3
There is no greater disaster than to underestimate danger.
Underestimation can be fatal.
Who says being a zombie is so bad? Hell, you got no pain, you got no worries and you got plenty of food around aka non-zombies...and their terrified screams are probably pretty cool right before you devour them—like violin music during a gourmet feast.
It is the height of hubris to assume an Apocalypse is a bad thing...I mean from whose POV?!?!
Of course you feel that way being that you are one of the happy few, with no brain you don’t have to worry about zombies wanting to eat you.
You mean THIS Zombie Apocalypse?
The trouble is, there is no such thing as *a* zombie apocalypse. You have to be clear as to which type of zombie apocalypse you are talking about. Just off the top of my head, here are some classes of zombie.
1) Traditional or “voodoo” zombie. A person who is either given a zombie drug, hypnotized, has had their brain damaged chemically or surgically, or is a freshly reanimated corpse. They are a mindless slave to whoever orders them around. Typically we call them “Democrats”.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWpU8sX10_4
2) Reanimated corpse, type II. These are zombies that are recently deceased but are fully controlled by a parasitic force within them. They only follow the prerogatives of their controller, and may or may not retain any humanity. They are usually distinguishable by rapidly decaying.
3) Romero zombies. These are the ponderous, shuffling zombies that crave human brains, likely because they are starved for the specific fatty tissues called myelin, mostly found in quantity in the brain, to support their unusual metabolism.
4) Post-Romero, or “fast” zombies. Kind of new on the scene, these are much harder to defend against because there is little or no time to prepare before they attack.
5) Skeletal zombies. Very difficult to fight, as they are somehow animate without muscle tissue or even physical brains. While they are still hazardous, they do not crave to eat humans, generally only to attack them, or defend something from them.
6) Various other types of zombie, in the minority. These include zombies that have retained their intellect, and are either decaying or not; “near” zombies that require artificial means to keep functioning; and “liberals”, who appear almost human, except have no brain at all, no taste, no morals, no ethics, no religion, no patriotism, and often defective sexual urges.
Ping
You left out Rob Zombies—who arise to heavy metal music and make silly if gruesome MTV videos and forgettable B movies.
You have the language but neglect the dialects.
I included video in post #3 of the type of zombies I am referring to.
Too bad Freepers can’t agree to meet up and band together at certain pre-defined locations after the apocalypse. There’s safety in numbers. Depending on how bad it gets, I don’t see much hope for small groups or family units that are determined to go it alone.
If cell towers are down, he's outta luck. Better to have battery operated walkie-talkies. One for every member of the family and teach the kid how to use it. Expensive ones have 30+ mile range which might be good to get the wife home from work but the cheap shorter range ones would be better to communicate within your group's smaller listening range.
Excuse me, but 99% of us don't have the ways or means to have such a compound as that guy. What should the rest of us do? Kart, what if we had a "What would you do in XYZ situation" discussions... what would you do within the first hours of elections being cancelled? what would you do if you knew electricity was being shut off in 24 hours? Banks were closing that day? Terrorists hit within our borders?
Good ideas for discussions. I have wondered about some of those things.
