Cecilia Giménez, the Spanish woman who really messed up when she tried to restore a 19th-century fresco of Jesus, now wants a piece of the action from the 2,000 or so euros ($2,600) her church has collected from tourists coming to see the ruined artwork.
Spain's El Correo reports, according to Gawker's translation, that the 80+-year-old Giménez has hired lawyers to make her case. A court battle is expected. Ars Technica says the church has also lawyered up.
As Eyder wrote last month, by the time Giménez was done with her attempt at restoration, the image was being likened to a werewolf. But news reports in recent weeks also showed that her work has some fans such as the online Beast-Jesus Restoration Society and that it is drawing tourists to the Santuario de Misericordia church in Borja.
So now, it appears, we're at the stage of the story where the inevitable legal actions begin.
ONLINE POLL (at the NPR site) Which raises a question: Do you think Cecilia Giménez should get a share of the donations given to her church by those coming to see the fresco she ruined?
My 3-year-old granddaughter could’ve done a better rendition than that. It’s so horrendously bad it’d be comical were it not for the subject image.
Seriously, though... it absolutely breaks my heart what that idiot woman did to that beautiful fresco.
Kilroy was here.
Is that Bruce Jenner?
Buon fresco does not flake like the photo of the decaying image. In buon fresco, the pigments (usually in an aqueous binder) are mixed with the wet plaster and effectively become part of the wall...true fresco deteriorates only when the whole wall surface crumbles, and indeed, there are any number of frescoes still around from the Roman era.
Secco fresco is done by painting onto already dried plaster, and is far more likely to exhibit the type of flaking shown in this image. While it has nowhere near the permanence as buon, a secco fresco should be far easier to restore.
As I've written on another thread, depending on the type of media this lady used, this should be a (relatively) easy restoration to perform. Given the international exposure this has received, I'm confident there is some aspiring intern or apprentice at the Prado who is perfectly capable of making his or her bones in the restoration community by cleaning up this mess, and would probably be willing to do so for the cost of materials and possibly room and board, given the jump start it would give their career.
What is Christina de Kirchner doing on this thread?
Lol, this thread is hilarious! The touch up work is not. How can something like that happen? Has this woman no shame? She should be thoroughly embarrassed.
I can honestly say that this thread, and the pics on it, had tears shooting from my eyes and I almost choked from laughing so hard. :-D
Next thing you know, she’ll want an NEA grant.
Here she is recently pissing off the Muslims....
...and PETA.
She should be in jail.
Is there any way it can be restored?
The first I have heard of this. I hope that this can be done.
Honestly it looks like Mr. Bean did it. I didn’t believe this was real the first time I read about it.
Thanks a fool in paradise. This is amazing, and it makes me laugh. What a wacko.
