That's a darn fine meal, and quick.

“I don't mind being dependent on $15 reading glasses from Walgreens; losing or breaking prescription lenses could be big trouble in the future”

With my cataract surgery, the left eye is “fixed” for long vision and the right eye is “fixed” for medium vision. Being “fixed” means they don't adjust - they are “fixed” where they are.

That means I can't read, period, without glasses to allow that. That scared me to death. As a result I have two prescription reading glasses, and two from the drug store in the strength I need. One of those is extremely small in a case in my purse and they stay there. If I'm away from home and the prescription pair I wear gets broken, that means I can't read jack until I get home, so those tiny ones in the purse will allow me to be able to read in case I need to read before I get home.

In a long term emergency, surely four pair for reading will be enough.

I have all my old perscrition glasses stored away, because, sometimes, due to my lifestyle, glasses get broken. I always buy the same exact frames, so I have spare parts.

Today, though, I had to use a jewler's loupe to read some fine print on a can of bug poison. Even glasses can't help with everything.

My rocket stove has one cooking spot. I am trying for one pot meals because of that. Yes, I can make a second stove but with a little planning you can make one work very well and I am going as skimpy on fuel as possible.

One pot meals are good for more than just saving fuel. Faster clean-up, less prep time... All of that.

I don't have to worry about fuel. I know how to render liberals for their fat. ;)

I can highly recommend the Grandma’s Country Cream dried milk. I cannot tell the difference between it and the 2% milk from the grocery store. No after taste at all. We use it everyday on our cereal, in coffee, cooking and just to drink a cold glass. Its cheaper than buying the nasty stuff from the grocery store. A case of 6 #10 cans is about $86. Each can makes 5 gallons.

I have two exact frames, but I did it because the bridge of my nose is small and it was hell to find a frame with a narrow bridge. Now, I have one to put new lens in when I need a prescription change.

However, now I have a pair that only has the reading prescription in it and it's very small so I can see over the frame when not reading. I hated to have to pick a new frame but saw a small one made out of thin pink metal and put it on and it fit the bridge of my nose perfectly. Then, the eyeglass lady said, “That is a child's frame.” Then she said, “But it fits.” I got those. Didn't realize the metal was titanium but it is so I understand those could get bent and go back the way they were - like they are unbreakable.

Hopefully, I am through with dealing with frames for a long time.

“I am going as skimpy on fuel as possible.”

When I began prepping years ago, I always kept in mind use as little fuel as possible. That guided all my choices for cooking fuel and food ingredients that would cook fast.

Many people don't seem to understand that concept. They will have something large to cook on that requires a lot of fuel to get the job done. I always went with as small as possible and hot as possible using small amounts of fuel.

Thanks for the reminder. I’ve been considering doing the same. Here, shade is important (not much atmosphere overhead at over 9,000 feet, and we’re a few degrees latitude down from you), but meat should stay deep-frozen for about three months in clean, well sealed, insulated containers.

Noticed something else during the short summer here (July). This is for folks who live in sunnier climates that are a little warmer than mine. A large water container left in the sun gets water pretty hot. We covered one with foil, shinier side outward, and the water actually got colder. Don’t know how much that would work at lower elevations.

I also hoard prescription glasses. Recently embarked on an Internet study of sights and optics for rifles to avoid overspending just to try this and that. Whoah. Quite a study for people with bifocals.

Well, it turned out pretty good. Just a little bite to it, I got it a little too sweet and a little too garlicky but I think I got it down for the next batch and I can use this batch for cooking.

I don’t like hot chile, I can’t even eat jalepenos, I go strictly mild and even then I find a hot one every once in a while.

I roasted, peeled and chopped 50 lbs. of green chile too.

Garlic itself adds a lot of sugar. It's loaded with it.

Sounds like you have a recipe that works for you, adjust and fire for effect. ;)

I try to be mindful of those that don't like really spicy, but sometimes, I forget.

I just consumed a bowl of soup that was out of date since 2/2/2011. I will check in tomorrow if I have a case of botulism.

I tried that, but last year they quit carrying the frames I've been getting for a decade. Oh well. I have plenty of old prescription glasses set aside, just in case. And for the last few years I've been getting new glasses every year, whether I need them or not. Just in case...

Ooops, it must have caused memory problems because I forgot to check back in. Other than that I have not had any problems digesting the soup.

LOL! Glad you are ok. I’ve eaten canned food that was about a year out of date - and am still here to prove it also.
