health vanity question about cake
me

Posted on 09/21/2012 7:03:36 PM PDT by married21

vanity question about food intolerance: What could the problem be with Costco birthday cake? I have had a piece every day since Tuesday, and have also had miserable chest discomfort/gas/burping discomfort almost immediately afterwards. Which ingredient could be the culprit? The shortening in the frosting? Soy of some sort? I am quite ready to give up and never eat this again, despite the fact that I really like it, but I need to know which part is the problem, so I can make other plans the next time we have a birthday around here.

I abhor fake sugar. Unless one absolutely has to have it (like my mother who was a diabetic) then IMHO you should use the real thing. Chemical sweeteners just aren’t good for you. I don’t know if that is what’s causing the original poster’s symptoms - I just know that when I taste a “fake sugar” item it reminds me of plastic - especially some of the store frostings. [I see “fake sugar” like a medicinal item for those whose consumption of real sugar is even more dangerous, but not one that should be consumed for lengthy periods of time, or in great quantities by others. All JMHO. I’m also a “real butter” vs. margarine person, too... Everything in moderation.]

Maybe it’s the pizza, burgers, french fries, fried chicken, burritos, etc. that you ate BEFORE you ate the Costco cake.

Seriously, I would bet that there are very few healthy ingredients in that cake, especially the frosting, which is probably solid grease of some sort. Do you ever wonder why the frosting is dazzling white? If it had butter it would be ivory.

I remember the old days when store-bought stuff used to taste good-—Hostess, chips ahoy, Hershey bars, etc. Now all of that overpriced stuff is made with the cheapest
ingredients—quality doesn’t even matter to these companies. I threw away a Hostess pie the other day because it tasted like chemicals. Cookies taste like sawdust. Everything has grease. It’s a pity because none of this stuff will ever get better, only worse than it already is.

Thanks. I’m going to look at canola, maltodextrin/sorbitol/sweeteners, soy, wheat and corn as potential problems.
My “gut” instinct is that it might be soy or corn, which have a bit of a “tract” record with me.

This is not really new. I’ve had the “Costco cake effect” before, so I don’t think it is a heart symptom. It is just feeling much worse now, and I am forced to admit that this treat is really not a treat for me any more.

The next birthday in the family is mine, in a couple months. I can bake my own cake, maybe with the suggested “hobo” recipe, hopefully leaving out the problem ingredient.

Thanks again for all your help.

Costco cakes are awesome because they feature butter cream frosting.

That means real frosting made with butter and powdered sugar...

Cake in this country took a turn for the worse when everyone decided that tasteless whipped cream frosting was so much HEALTHIER for you...

A) No, it’s not healthier. It still has a ton of calories. And no taste.
B) It’s FROSTING. It’s supposed to be bad for you.

There are under-thrities in this country who’ve never tasted REAL cake. When they do, their eyes light up.

So yay, Costco, for keeping the butter cream torch burning when many real bakeries won’t even make butter cream anymore.

Those crunchy things on top are candles and when eaten are hard to digest. It is recommended they be removed before eating the cake.

Very well could be. My husband had the culmination of this problem just this month. In fact, with his last attack—the one that was the last straw, he ate my daughter’s birthday cake (Sam’s Club) over Labor Day weekend. No frosting on his. The GB is bye bye now.

GB starts to screw with you at some point when it decides it no longer wishes you to enjoy fats of any kind.

I haven’t spoken to my wife in over three months. We’re not fighting...I just don’t like to interrupt.

I looked up what the gallbladder does and why an excessively fatty diet harms it. Bummer (visions of rib eye steaks in my head). Oh well. Knowledge is power.

Tried belching, discreetly. (11 y/o thinks moms don’t belch. I didn’t want to disillusion him.)
