Movie for a Sunday afternoon: "North West Frontier" (1959)
You Tube ^ | 1959 | J. Lee Thompson

This week's feature is to honor the memory of the late Herbert Lom who passed away last week.

An exciting 1959 adventure(a British "western" of sorts) set in imperial India about the attempts to protect a young prince from Mohemmadan terrorists(sound familiar)? As a Bible-believing Christian, I don't agree with the universalistic quip Kenneth More's character makes near the beginning but other than that, it's quite a good historical drama. Lom plays a character that Hollywood(or in this case, London) wouldn't have the guts to include today, i.e., an Islamic villain.

It’s somewhat quick and subtle but during the opening narration when he discusses the reasons for fighting(”those who call God by different names.”) which contrasts with what Peter said concerning Jesus Christ in Acts 4:12-”Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is no other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved”. Consequently, I would not say Christians and Mohammedans(and other non-Christians) serve the same God by different names. Nevertheless, as both a Bible-believing Christian and a freedom-loving American I would support the liberties of non-Christians to disagree with me about it, i.e., I wouldn’t try to deprive them of their property, life and freedom over this topic and would expect them to show me and fellow believers who agree with me the same courtesy.

On the topic of the film, have you seen it? It’s quite entertaining and I believe it was a huge hit. I read that director J. Lee Thompson’s work on it prompted his hiring to be the director of another subsequent classic adventure hit, “The Guns of Navarone.”

Just watched it; file that under “Rioting Muslim hordes trying to kill the infidel”.

It’s a thick file folder.

BTW, Lauren Bacall was a complete knockout. Hubba-hubba!

The last film that I can recall that featured Islamic villains was the frist “Back To The Future”.

I saw it years ago. It is interesting that with what all the British do to protect this Hindu prince from the muzzlemen, at the last he says he must grow up to FIGHT THE BRITISH. Talk about biting the hand...

Just so you know, it's only a fictional movie made by the Brits, not a historical documentary. In reality there were no Hindu princes ruling over North West Frontier. And the Maharajas and Princes never participated in the freedom struggle against the British.
