ARGO. If you are old enough (rated R), YOU MUST SEE IT. This is a really compelling movie. Great suspense, and timely history. I'm realizing now that anybody younger than 50 probably doesn't remember the whole Iran Hostage crisis at all. So go see the movie, then ask your favorite old timers about it. Minor warning: much swearing (some gratuitous, some justifiable.)

As a movie goes, it is pretty good
as history, it fails dramatically
propaganda against the Shah, from the Iranian actors and the supposedly State department actors and CIA guys
Blame America for the fall of Iran, blame the Shah for being mean
They totally left out all descriptions of Khomenie killing people, hinted it was mob violence when it was organized mob violence in reality
Affleck wasn’t bad. The other Americans weren’t so bad, either. They dont look so much like the real escapees as the previews made it look, but close enough that if you know the players, they pose okay :)
The ending is total fiction according to the Book ARGO and the escapees themselves
Still, not a bad movie, I will most likely buy it, it means somethign to me :)

In my (admittedly tepid) defense, though, I will say that Dear Hubby and I originally went to the theater to see Clint Eastwood’s movie, but we misinterpreted the time. So, at least my first stab at a movie was not one directed by an Obama supporter.

I was 32 in 1980, had passed through youthful liberalism for just a few short years, and become a very solid Reagan conservative, by then. (After a graduate econ thesis comparing East and West Germany, post WWII economic performance, voted for Ford in 1976, etc.)
America was restored by Reagan, although he eventually disappointed me about immigration and his deficits.
He was a great world leader, creating the path to freedom for Eastern Europe and the USSR, without a shot being fired.
I believe the Iranians feared he would attack them if they waited and played games. That is what peace through strength is all about.
Obama has squandered whatever ability to influence world events Bush held. Obama is an appeaser, if not totally inept, empty chair.
Thus your tagline is merely a platitude because you talk the talk but don’t walk the walk.
I generally don’t do economic boycotts of liberal stuff. I do generally avoid buying from China if there is a viable alternative. I also do make it a point to patronize folks like Chik-Fil-A.

How is it propaganda? Did you see it? It’s a terrific evocation of the existential crisis these people were in. It’s not pro-Iran by any stretch.
My wife and I saw it yesterday. Terrific film, and Affleck is turning into a great director. As to the politics, if you look around the internet it's liberals who are complaining about this movie. It says the film demonizes Iranians and glorifies the CIA, while drawing Carter-Obama comparisons at a bad time.
I saw it last night. It disturbed me that it began with a few moments of anti-American hits and a complete failure to mention that Khomeni was a monster too, but the horrible nature of the Iranian regime was made clear as the movie progressed. The Iranians were made to look like crazed irrational bloodthirsty savages, with the exception of a few sane, brave individuals. The CIA looked noble. It was engaging with a lot of laugh-out-loud moments in it.
The theater was full. I think every conservative in my highly liberal area was there. Tall straight men with short hair and neatly-dressed ladies. Afterward they all congregated in groups outside the theater, in the lobby, talking. We were all eyeing each other as if wondering, “Are you one too? Are you the other RR voters in this Marxist area?”
The only thing that really peed me off about it was the last lines of the movie, a voiceover from that traitorous piece of crap Carter in which he incredibly takes credit for the release of the hostages. It was beyond belief. What a worthless creature he is. I was shocked but not surprised, if you see the distinction.
I recall that the opening sequence mentioned that the Muslim regime which took over 1979 was fanatical.
Was Carter highly involved in the negotiations? I assume the Iranian Muslims really hated him since they waited till the day after he was out office to release the hostages.

The audience actually applaused at the end.
Fantastic film,which I’m recommending to everyone.
Terrific cast also.I loved the Alan Arkin character.

I saw it. Both funny and thrilling. I’d recommend it. Goodman and Arkin are pretty funny throughout.
While I agree the voiceover at the end by Carter was irritating the strange thing is that I had totally forgotten about it until you mentioned it. It made no impression on me, and presumably on most others as well. It didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the movie.
That happened where I saw it too. And everyone watched the end credits all the way through.
