In Stockton, California, which declared bankruptcy earlier this year, your chances of becoming a victim of a violent crime such as murder, rape, robbery or assault are 1 in 70, which is nearly four times higher than the national average.
Your chances of being the victim of a property crime are even more likely, with 1 in every 17 residents of the city facing the prospect of having their house broken into or car stolen this year.
This is what happens when a city, county, state or federal government can no longer pay its bills and is forced to lay off workers. In the case of Stockton, the city has cut tens of millions of dollars from their budget, mostly targeting law enforcement and other essential services.

Just speculation but I wonder about the vote in California this election.
How much worse does it have to get before the liberal goofs there realize how big a mistake they’ve made and either change their position or simply do not vote? I find a comparison between California and Massachusetts interesting because bother are very left wing but despite the pejorative “Taxachusetts” if you look the statistics Massachusetts has about an average tax load for US states and California is the worst.
I have a friend in San Diego who is a fairly left-wing guy. He is supporting Romney this election and is tired of the crime and urban decay he sees. I think he is about to become a fiscal - not moral conservative.
What will it take for the people on the West Coast to act more like Massachusetts?
Also dose the lower tax load mean that Massachusetts is less liberal than California?
As a californian who lives near Long Beach, I gotta tell you that I see FAR fewer Obama stickers now. In 08 they were everywhere. Not now. The excitement is gone, gone, gone.
But the lower income minorities tend to vote for their handouts, not their future.
While not advocating vigilantism, perhaps something just like it with the same results?
All there cities can survive by cutting public salaries and cutting off all payments to CalPERS.

Here’s what you do, Stockton City Officials:
Reduce all cop salaries by fifty percent. Reduce retirement benefits for incoming cops by fifty percent.
You still get good people, and you double your police force for the same money.
Oh, the police union won’t “let” you? They’re threatening to strike?!
Then fire every cop who strikes and still hire a replacement for half the salary.

Okay, then. Do nothing. Whine, cry, and lose your city to anarchy. And to public employee unions.
Provided that your neighbors and you are all on the same page. An unlikely situation for many Americans. I’d wager that most residents of Stockton have no idea who they can trust and who they cannot.

you know, I would gladly agree to pay MORE taxes if I knew that it wouldn't go to retire somebody with a mere 20 yrs of work life...nearly full pay, all the benefits, including expensive health care....its just crazy.
