Ouch. Monday night was the first time I heard my daughter apply that label to herself, and the word didn't please me. She and six friends/coworkers were about to watch the final Obama-Romney debate on the large-screen TV in our suburban basement.
These twenty-something kiddies were enjoying our hospitality because it was free. They're a company (founder, partners, contractors, trainee), part of the start-up trend whereby young persons hang out at coffee shops, staring into laptops, trying to start the next Foursquare or Fab and make a billion dollars. Until that happens, they can't afford things like airfare or hotels. So in order to attend a conference in the city near us, they had driven cross-country in a minivan and were staying at our house for four and a half days.
Up to this point, neither my husband nor I had said a word to them about politics or cultural norms in general. When they brought in large quantities of beer and liquor and stayed up late consuming it, we said nothing. We did not inquire about the marital status of the couple cohabiting in the main guest room. On Sunday, we went to church but did not try to recruit them to go with us. We were not merely nonjudgmental, but supportive, stocking up on groceries to meet their various dietary needs and keeping quiet while they occupied the kitchen, "co-working."
Tolerant I am. But being told to leave my own basement did not cut it.

Now they know they can walk all over any conservate any time they damn well please and no body is going do anything about it. Enough is enough.
They can let the rubber hit the road and find out just what reality and life is all about.

“Hands off” parenting almost always produces liberals.
My son is in the eighth grade, and is as rabidly conservative as I am, and he knows WHY he is conservative.
Gives his teachers fits when he can explain his views and they can’t!
This week, his history teacher told the class, “If people don’t vote, then they don’t have the right to complain.”
My son responded, “What if your choices are a totalitarian dictator vs. a utopian socialist? You don’t have the right to complain that BOTH choices are bad?”
The teacher just looked at him. She couldn’t answer.

I completely understand. My parents paid me a dime per week to take out the trash when I was 3. At age six I worked in a tobacco field for 50 cents per day. Until I was 16 I mowed neighbors yards, had a newspaper route, and did odd jobs around the neighborhood. At 16 I started working in fast food and at a moving and storage company to fund my college education. I ultimately worked my way up the corporate ladder by producing higher sales and profits at the business units I managed. No helping hands or understanding bosses along the way.
While I helped with tuition,, my daughter worked part time during college to cover her expenses. She also took out loans and earned an academic merit based scholarship her last two years. When she decided to go to graduate school I told her she would have to pay for the degree herself but she could live at home rent free. She worked two jobs getting her masters and took a heavier than normal load so she could finish a semester early. In 2009, when most college grads couln’t find work, she pounded on doors to find a full time job in her field and she found a part time job on weekends. Today she is debt free and still works the second job so she can build her savings. While many of her former classmates still can’t find employment, she is demonstrating that hard work and determination can still result in success. She is also very conservative in her social and political views. To date she has been unable to find a young man who meets her standards.
In my life I’ve met very few liberals who worked from a very early age. It seems the collectivist point of view is associated with dependence at home during the formative years. I remember graduating from college in the morning and reporting to work at a corporate job that same afternoon. The concept of going home to sleep in my parent’s home that night and eat at their table was inconceivable. I was already paying my own way and didn’t want or need a hand or handout.

Humans aren’t dogs. It’s not quite that easy. “Training”/upbringing does matter, but in the end, your children choose their own path and are responsible for their own decisions.

Exactly. When I read that she allowed that and couldn’t even bring herself to ask if they were married, it explained everything.
Indeed. That daughter was trying to “other” her own mother in her mother’s own house, using an Alinsky tactic on her own mother, under her mother’s roof, at the hands of her mother’s hospitality.
I read it to my daughter, 15, last night. I told her pretty much what I posted. She then said, "Would you not talk to me if I were a liberal?"
I said, I would still talk to her but our relationship would be very strained because I really could not have any respect for her and honestly I would question her bravery in the face of standing up to what is right against the left or her mental stability. That is honestly how I would feel. My kids have a very solid understanding of who the left is, the history and the misery it brings. I said you don't have to mirror my beliefs but there are many choices other than the destructive cult of the left that can only bring you unhappiness.
I especially loved it when he added, "And be quiet out there, my neighbors are asleep, they work too!"
