FRANKENSTORM: Are You Ready for the Mutant Storm of the Century?
The Daily SHeeple ^ | 10/26/12 | Kimberly Paxton

Hurricane Sandy will be assaulting the East Coast, morphing into a mutation of a blizzard and a hurricane, the likes of which meteorologists claim has not been seen for more than 100 years.

Government forecasters have predicted a 90 percent chance for 4 days’ worth of gale-force winds, heavy rain, flooding and maybe snow beginning on Sunday.

Traveling from the Bahamas, the storm has taken the lives of 29 people in the Caribbean at current count. The storm is traveling up the Eastern seaboard where it is predicted to collide with a seasonal nor’easter. At that point, the fury of the blizzard and the hurricane will combine before striking the highly populated areas of Washington, DC and New York City.

The storm hit Florida early Friday morning and is traveling up the coast at approximately 10 miles per hour. Forecasters say that this slow journey increases the risk of flooding, as it will strike multiple high tide cycles. Schools in the southernmost part of Florida have been closed for the remainder of the week.

Yeah we have natural gas, too but the forced air heating system doesn’t run without power. So it’s useless in that regard. A fireplace is one of the best assets to have in a winter type storm without power. You can cook on it and have a heat source. Also a gas stove, propane or nat. gas grill outside works well, too. Just saying....

Thankfully we won’t be affected by this storm but I will pray for those in the path. I’m hoping the hype out weighs the actual event this time. Large cities or even smaller ones without power may not get it back up before November 6 (election). I pray that’s not the case!

Check with your airline. They have travel advisories out now because they expect to cancel many flights. They’re allowing passengers to re-schedule and not charging to do so.

FWIW, one reason many of us Native Americans have a soft spot for Mormons is our shared history of being driven out of our homes and into marginal lands.

Before so many of us got addicted to the government teat, we knew a thing or two about wilderness survival.

Excuses me. But anyone with even a minimal understanding of meteorology can look at the very real and most likely combination of a Hurricane and a major arctic air mass meeting should be able to understand what people in the target area are likely to face.

With broken glass all around, with rusty nails exposed, splintered wood abounds, with vermin forced out of their habitat, a very comprehensive first aid kit, and instructions, is mandatory.

And don't forget to update your tetanus shot!

Bought one of those solar, hand-cranked, NiCad radios a couple of years back. Now testing it, recharging, etc.

Are You Ready for the Mutant Storm of the Century?...I'm getting sort of tired of this - last year when Irene smacked NJ only a few miles from here, we were told that was the "storm of the century" - now the weatherreaders are giving us the same hype about this storm - how 'bout just some good old-fashioned showers and breezes for a while......

Irene didn’t have a major arctic air mass on a collision course with it.

Does anyone look at weather maps?

It’s called “water-powered pressure” sump pump. There is no dependence on any kind of electricity. ;-)

It’s harder to find, but as a mechanical engineer, I’m only too glad not to depend on mere electrons!

Nat. Gas is great, but the safety NAZIs have screwed us in many ways there too. I still vastly prefer having heat and cooking as gas. Can’t have a pilot light that’s not electrically generated. Can’t light many pilots any more. Heavens; it might explode if you try. When I was a child, everything was possible to get going. Not anymore.

“A fireplace is one of the best assets to have in a winter type storm without power.”

Absolutely. I grew up with 1, and insist on it in our houses (my last house didn’t, but that’s another story). MIL (PA, ironically) doesn’t know why it’s a big deal to have such an antiquated thing you’re not going to use much at all that could be “dangerous” and drafty. But, they DO come in handy.

Gas would be fine if the safety wimps would allow us ways to light pilots ourselves these days. Oh, no, everything has to be “safe” - and to hell with you if you freeze or roast or can’t eat.

“We’ll see if it ends up any worse than a catagory 2 hurricane.”

Actually a cat 2 hurricane coming straight into the heavily populated NE corridor would be very, very bad. While Sandy is currently weakening and appears to be breaking up, there is still a lot of energy in that storm, it still has a very intense core and her jog to the west will put her over some very warm gulfstream water which may lead to strengthening and expanding in size. It could hit as a cat 1 but Sandy will have an extremely large wind field and may further intensify when it meets up with the other system even if it doesn’t regain hurricane status.

Again, I say: Agnes.

Agnes came up from the Gulf, crossed over FL and the Carolinas before exiting into the Atlantic, making a second land fall in the NYC area as a strong tropical storm. Agnes also merged with a low pressure system and like Sandy is predicted to do, slowed down and dumped a lot of rain that cause epic flooding especially in PA. I was about 8 years old when Agnes came through Baltimore and I don’t recall much in the way of wind but lots of rain. My mom was from Harrisburg PA and we used to live there. I remember her listening to the AM radio, a station of Harrisburg, hearing the reports of all the flooding. The Agnes flooding crest records on the Susquehanna have yet to be broken, even with the very bad flooding we had here last year after the double shot of Irene and Lee. Sandy may change all that. And if there are widespread power outages, it could be worse, much worse than Agnes.

I didn’t say it would be good. I’m just saying that the media hype and the “Frankenstorm” label make it sound like it’s going to be the world’s worst natural disaster.

Fortunately for Obama, it takes the headlines off Benghazi.

A category 2 hurricane hitting the northeast would be as bas as a three day, 36” blizzard hitting Jacksonville. We don’t do hurricanes well up here.

The ruin the power grid, and all of those nice leaves are still on the trees....and they will come down. The trees, not the leaves.

I have all of my stuff,..... But still, this could suck.

Fortunately for Obama, it takes the headlines off Benghazi.

Very true but if the Obama administration’s response to Sandy is anywhere a near as confused and inept as its response to Benghazi was, that might actually be bad for Obama. But so close to the election, it’s unclear what effect that might have on the election if any.

As far as media hype, yes I agree it is a bit much, but OTOH if it is bad and people think they weren’t warned or if the outcome doesn’t match the hype people lose faith in the forecasts…it’s sort of a damned if they do, damned if they don’t scenario.

I recall during, immediately after Katrina that many in the media were saying “New Orleans dodged a bullet” and called the “all clear”. OTOH, the media and weather forecasters were warning for days that Katrina would be bad and many chose to ignore the warnings.

Weather forecasting and advance warning systems are much more accurate now days than they were many years ago. I recall with Agnes, going to bed the night before expecting to go to a school picnic the next day only to wake up with my mom telling me, “you’re not going today, we’re having a “hurricane””, it seemed to take a lot of people by surprise. I recall that the blizzard of ’83, going to work that morning with a forecast of a “little light snow, some flurries” and 8 hours later looking out my window at work with a foot of snow on the ground and more piling up. I was stranded at work for nearly two days after nearly 23 inches of snow fell with wicked high winds, big drifts, bitter cold temperatures and “thunder snow” during the height of the storm. The forecasts of the 1993, 1996 and 2003 blizzards seemed like hype but were pretty accurate.

Obama & his minions will do all they can to keep Sandy in the headlines as long as possible leading up to election day.

Obama & his minions will do all they can to keep Sandy in the headlines as long as possible leading up to election day.

So if millions of people lose power and are without power for days or weeks and there is major flooding with lots of property losses not just personal but also business loses, would you prefer or are you suggesting that the media should just ignore that story?

Remember and like it or not “all news is local”. If (even if I prepped) I’m sitting in the dark for days or weeks, supplies start running low, stores are closed or sold out and I can’t get to work for days because of closed roads, reports of looting, for me personally Benghazi isn’t going to be first and foremost in my mind – my and my family’s safety and survival is going to first and forefront. That’s just reality. When I turn on my emergency AM radio, I’m going to want local news as in when is my power going to be restored, what roads are open or closed, where can I go for dry ice, etc.

Um. Yeah, riiiight. That’s exactly what I’m suggesting. Uh huh. Sure.
Yeah, you understood the point I was making....NOT

We seem to have a lot of ‘ODS’ here on FR. Yes ‘Bama’ is horrible, yes he HAS GOT TO GO, but people you act like he either conjurered up the storm or the whole thing is some Machiavellian plot out of a bad suspense novel. LIFE goes on, things happen. The storm doesn’t know it’s election time or that ‘BAM’ has done. I see people being unprepared for the storm dying as a result of it crying out Obama’s fault with their last breath! I guess if you go to the doctor next week and he tells you you have cancer it will be Obama’s fault? If you have a flat tire on the way to work next week it will be Obama’s fault? If you step on a crack and break your mother’s back it will be Obama’s fault? This is the talk and the methods of the leftist. Its the same shill BS they spewed against George Bush. I thought we are better than that. I know we should be better than that. I know we can be better than that.
