What is wrong with Free Republic?
Suggestions to make your FR pages load faster ^ | 10/29/12 | self

Why is Free Republic so slow to load, and when it does, it throws me off and I get the "Cannot connect" message from Windows. And it's NOT just during debates. It's happening all the time now. Is it just MY computer? I know HuffPo is down because of the storm, but FR is out of California. In the 12 years I've been here I've never had so much trouble with this site. Until about a month ago.

There is a psychology at work here, because we are attached to one another like pen pals, as well as to the fabulous format and the site info, which is available elsewhere. When I periodically can access, I am forced to use the site as a reference point to go elsewhere. Posting a comment is out of the question 95% of the time and I don’t see a useage increase. In fact, noticeably, I don’t see but few old regulars anymore.

My own critical problem has become intolerable since the day BEFORE the third debate. Debate night was out of the question. Eventually, I have to look at myself for tolerating bad service when there is no end in sight. Sadly, FR is shuttering itself and I feel terrible, as a teal addict might.

No, it’s our computer. Either hardware or software or database issues or router issues or config issues or provider issues or something. Or we suffer from incompetent, unprofessional management (hey, I resemble that remark). Or we’re just having trouble handling peak loads that are approaching nine or ten times our normal. Or possibly some combination of all of the above.

Praying we get through this without losing our minds.

Praying that you will keep a close eye on your mind Jim! Keep the screen door locked.

From what I have seen and what little information has been reported, it’s a database problem. There is either a table fragmentation problem or the size of the database has just outgrown the design/implementation of the software. It’s not likely to be a hardware limitation. However, all offers of professional help have been spurned, at least publicly. Maybe after the election, it will be reconsidered.

That might be worth investigating, although I don't have the professional expertise. If correct, perhaps FR could split the database at a key date such as Inauguration Day, 2013, so that we can access "freerepublic.com" with the delay if we make that selection for historical checks, but new posts are in the much smaller and faster newfreerepublic.com".

I am an IT person. Your experience points the finger AWAY from Free Republic, and to another culprit.

I thought that was what I was trying to say: it's not FR's fault.

By the way, you can all laugh at me now. I just had a "problem loading page" message just like you! The gods of the innerwebs are smiting me for my bragging. :-)

The door is still there, but no screen. Threw my computer through it weeks ago.

I don’t understand why I’m not experiencing the problems mentioned. I have no issues with slow loads or errant postings. My connection works fine.

Your six identical replies still make me wish for a filter to stop duplicate posts. I see them over and over on here, and all they do is add to the database, the load, the traffic, the slowness...

Slow, but I’m not complaining! Keep up the good work. This is the best format for all political sites.

Apologies all, I hit at least seven times and finally had to walk away as it hung so long with no indication it even posted, so really I shouldn’t post at all, but can’t seem to resist trying.

=================================================

It's filled with supposed conservatives who will vote for a dyed in the wool liberal no questions asked.

I think that’s the same conclusion we’re coming to. Very likely a database/software/hardware design vs actual usage issue. And there is no quick cure. A complete redesign and rewrite using all newer technologies in hardware and software ought to do the trick. Thankfully, I’ve been working on a new system using AJAX based techniques for a couple years (in my spare time) and even have a bare bones prototype working, but it’s months away from even being ready for beta testing. And John is beginning to think Cloud. Who knows? We may be rolling out something brand spanking new in the months ahead. But it’s going to be hell around here for the next week or so. Praying we make it.

The one he added yesterday about shutting off things from the sidebar sped me up a fair amount.
