We Need Food, We Need Clothing’: Staten Island Residents Plead for Help 3 Days After Sandy
abc news ^

The residents of Staten Island are pleading for help from elected officials, begging for gasoline, food and clothing three days after Sandy slammed the New York City borough.

“We’re going to die! We’re going to freeze! We got 90-year-old people!” Donna Solli told visiting officials. “You don’t understand. You gotta get your trucks down here on the corner now. It’s been three days!”

Staten Island was one of the hardest-hit communities in New York City. More than 80,000 residents are still without power. Many are homeless, and at least 19 people died on Staten Island because of the storm. One of the devastated neighborhoods was overwhelmed by a violent surge of water. Residents described a super-sized wave as high as 20 feet, with water rushing into the streets like rapids.

Staten Island resident Mike Abuzzio’s home is completely gone, with only his floor boards remaining. He, his wife and their two young daughters have been staying with relatives.

“My youngest daughter yesterday said, ‘Daddy, I want to go,’” Abuzzio told ABC News. “I told her, ‘It’s going to be awhile, hon.’ She doesn’t understand. She’s 6.”

My BIL’s daughter sent an email from the daycare - said they don’t have any money, no food, and the banks are closed. They are well away from any flooding - just no power.

My wife said “I can’t cry too much for them, they had a week’s notice to get ready for it”.

And my son said “And Dad is ready for the storm 80 years from now”.

But sadly, I imagine at least 10% of people are in similar circumstances without more than a day or two of food - so maybe 1 million people??

The Nat’l Guard better be armed. And what is bad is that regular folks like my BIL will be a drain on the system, when the help is direly needed where houses are gone, flooded, etc.

Keep your hands out waiting for help liberal idiots. This is what happens when you give up your personal responsibility and expect the government to save you. I pray to God that these people learn a lesson quickly and save themselves.

The media ignored the Stafford Act blunders of Blanco and made it Bush’s Fault. Now that Obama has declared that Everything Is Under Control, including superfluous shots in the Situation Room (he has no authority once the Stafford papers are filed), is the media going to show us the pain and suffering like they did for Katrina? They only have five days to keep it quiet, can they manage that?

If State Sponsored Media goofs up this could “influence” the election!

By the 4th day after Katrina, Bush’s people had evacuated over 20,000 people to the stadium. And then within 2 more days, almost 40,000 people had been evacuated out of New Orleans

Just sayin.

lil Barry has another day to show he is the MAN that George Bush was... the POTUS the demokrats and press crucified for “not caring”

Most city folk are not prepared for this kind of adversity. But no one is ever prepared to lose absolutely everything.

You know the answer to that one, FRiend.

They only have five days to keep it quiet, can they manage that?

No.

What they will do is trumpet every useless 0bama gesture as the greatest act of human charity since Mother Teresa stapled lepers back together in Calcutta. They've already managed to cast a negative light on Romney collecting food for the Red Cross. If you can smear that, you can smear anything.

Get word to them with this one TIP.

Outside Garden variety Solar Lights brought inside at night. Presto Lights.

Maybe they have some, or can purchase some soon. At least they would have lights.

” If you can smear that, you can smear anything. “

We’ve got to get past the dedication issue and apply Alinsky tactics.

I can feel for the elderly who live alone and don't have family nearby to help them prepare...but those who are young enough to be ready and who had warning...not so much.

In Florida, we have dealt with the same stuff, downed trees, power poles, lines, flooding, surge, major damage, and destruction, many times over. Each year, we get our hurricane supplies ready...just in case.

The one thing I'd trade...heat/humidity/mosquitoes/no breeze...for cool weather, even cold temps, in the aftermath. You can bundle up or build a campfire, but it's hard to sleep when you're living in a virtual sauna and no way to get cooled off.

Andrea Mitchell of the MainStream Numbnuts for Barack Corps (MSNBC) criticized Romney for collecting food for New Yorkers.

Andrea Mitchell, who thought the Valerie Plame/Richard Armitage deal was a massive story, but can't find Benghazi on a map. Or formulate basic questions about this deadly botch. Where do they get these lazy dopes?

Oh but people here are, doncha know. I can't believe the coldhearted comments I'm reading here. Same thing at the ABC website. (The only redeeming thing is that people are seeing through The Won's photo op with Christie. Some are even making the connection to his not really giving a hoot about them to his not giving a hoot about our people at the Libyan embassy.)

If someone has lost everything, i have a ton of sympathy for them. If their power is out and that is all, then I empathize with them—because that is what happened to us in New England a couple of times last year.

It sucks. But it is survivable.

And, for those who are watching from the sidelines, take note. You can survive this. And it doesnt take much to get ready and to help others.

But, these folks live in a world where they look around and hundreds and thousands of telephone poles on the group and ask why the power isn’t on for the game tonight.

And the politicians are just as bad. I cringe when they say, “they should have been prepared.” How exactly are you supposed to be prepared for a complete devastation of your power and communications infrastructure.

They have no clue.

Leadership means telling the common folk to STFU and help, not complain.

"Let them eat cake!"

Bette Midler's 17th Annual "Hulaween" Party With French Flair

Debra Messing as Marie Antoinette - The "Smash" star's French aristocrat costume came complete with oversized pearls, a giant bustle, and a downright enormous white wig. We'd like to see her eat cake in that!

Call out the WAAAHmbulance.

If you are an adult under 60 years old and in reasonably good health, and can’t make it a day or two without food, you are basically hopeless. I do this all the time when I pick up a few pounds.

OTOH, these people pay for a gold-plated government with those astronomical taxes, and maybe they have high expectations. HA!
