The “Brittany” film is a bit messed up, also having 2 dogs looking like Border Collie/Australian/Kelpie mixes. Who are we judging? The BCs react a bit more while the Brittany totally doesn’t care.
I have an Aussie and a Lab/Shar-pei cross. Both are guard dogs in the sense they have not been socialized to anyone unless we are around. I used to say “I pity the fool that ever breaks into this house” and I still believe that but we don’t get much company out in the country....
Our next-door neighbor broke into our base housing/trailer and was rewarded with a bite from our 10 to 15 pound, usually submissive but noisy chihuahua/terrier mix.
I think that part of the problem was the the human residents of the house weren't there. Dogs pick up on body language; these dogs had no (human) pack members to protect and no cues from the Alpha on how to react.
Smart people listen to smart dogs!
Once when we were out of town my son sneaked into the backyard to see what the dogs would do. Since we have a doggie door all seven can come and go as they please.
He said they all came boiling around the corner with PitStop in the lead with his fur up. He said he backed off and was calling Pit by name hoping to settle him down. Once Pit saw it was my son who was now back outside the gate he settled down but was still strung up a bit on the adrenaline.
Took me a minute to figure out SAHM! Dogs are great company.
My 17 year old Basenji (blind as a bat) would sleep through the bombing of Dresden.
She’s earned it.

The GS probably had the best response of all of them. Actually, ideal would be a combo of some of these dogs.
The Rott did warning barks ahead of time, but checked out when the guy was in. The GS apparently (no film prior) let the man in w/o barking but seemed suspicious as time wore on and barked more at him.
Frankly, you don’t want a dog who just indiscriminantly charges and rips everything. There are many times “strangers” come to your home that you don’t want ripped apart. Especially if you want them to care for the dog. My dear-departed Perfect Dog GS (”only” 60 lbs as a GS should be, not oversized) always scared the !%##!%$# out of people outside the house, and she knew the INSTANT someone touched the grass on our lawn 300ft away down a steep hill just by hearing. Excellent “watch” dog. People coming to the house itself were scared. She ran after 1 boy when she slipped through the door after he stood there asking us to mow, but she stopped going for his ankle the INSTANT he obeyed my order to “STOP RUNNING!” and ran right by him. She always barked at everyone but those always in the house, regardless, but if you used her name, she’d let you in while barking (ask cleaning lady, my friend who took care of her on vacation). Cautious, anyway, but she’d watch you until she felt comfortable.
I want a dog that walks the line. Not enough are smart enough for that, though.
I have a tasmanian chihuahua; if anyone besides us tries to touch him he becomes quite aggressive. The other chihuahua would probably love on the intruder after barking for a moment.
Mine only weighs 35 pounds, but if anything moves out on his street, he barks like crazy. He jumps up to look out the windows and makes a lot of noise. And if anyone he doesn’t know comes in, he’ll bite. He’s done it. Good boy.
Good dogs, those.

Ahhh, dobes smile too. I have always known what it is, and it surprises me when others don’t.
But, and however, my dobe smiles only for friends and family, and only when calm.
This particular dog is somewhat “hard”, and NO amount of training will smooth that out.
He attacks the door if anyone knocks, same with the big front windows. We are hard pressed to catch him and get him to obey. It was not this bad until his companion died two years ago.
I am certain that if someone broke in he would absolutely attack. There wouldn’t be a steak big enough...he would just figure he’d get it after he disabled ya.
And by “disabled” I do mean I think he would dispatch an intruder.
My 3 lb prissy doorbell would pee on any male intruder that is stupid enough to pick her up...which seems to be the first thing men do when they see her. If the intruder is a woman she gets away no worse for the wear.

Exactly! My Border Collie/ Sheltie mix would does the same thing.. Barks his head off first then chills out after he’s had a chance to assess the intruder..err visitor. ;)
I agree if your dog was trained; but Kevlar was not backed into a corner so to speak.
My father in law had a neighbor who was robbed. He had a St Bernard and a chihuahua. The St Bernard did nothing; but that little one tore the shirt off the guy and he dropped everything he was stealing trying to get away. The St Bernard didn’t have to do a thing.
ACDs are great. I have one. Strong herders.
My brother has had two female ACD’s. They were/are both “at your heels”, loyal, one person dogs. They get along well with family, but tend to stick to their master and are a bit aloof. He wouldn’t own any other dog.
