Did America Just Dodge the Next Sarah Palin?
Religion Dispatches ^ | Nov. 13, 2012 | Joanna Brooks

Mia Love was supposed to be the first black Republican woman in Congress.

The daughter of Haitian immigrants, Love was the mayor of Saratoga Springs, Utah, a recently-incorporated, fast-growing suburb of Salt Lake City.

She had a newly redrawn Congressional district that put six-term Congressman Jim Matheson, a Blue Dog Democrat and a member of a politically prominent Utah Mormon family, in a precarious position.

She had a big-time spot as a speaker at the Republican National Convention.

She had Republican All-Stars like Condoleeza Rice, John Boehner, Paul Ryan, and Mitt Romney raising money and programming robocalls for her.

And she’d even been the star of one of those new “I’m a Mormon” LDS Church public relations campaign videos.

The Salt Lake Tribune’s pollsters gave Love a 12-point lead on November 2.

But against the odds, Jim Matheson held onto his seat, as Love failed to launch her Congressional career.

“And Love’s own extreme and simplistic positions, including her move to defund Social Security, the Department of Education, federally-subsidized education grants and guaranteed loans, and even federal grants to local police forces.”

Except for defunding Social Security (it needs to be changed, not killed), these are all excellent and necessary ideas.

Conservative women reject hate (as do all Conservatives) — thus they retain their beauty.

That is very important to remember, I need to remember that more when I delve into the depths of my hate when I think or discuss Ubama and his ilk.

There MAY BE a handful of women who can pull off the long hair after 50 look. hillary is NOT one of them.

Most mature women who let their hair grow long look as ridiculous as guys with bald heads and gray ponytails. Even when they color it.

Love's candidacy was iffy at best. Matheson and his family are very popular in Utah, he has A rating from the NRA,he is seen as a fiscal conservative, he has been reelected 6 times despite repeated legislative attempts to redistrict him out, Utah has a strong libertarian presence in the district..what could go wrong?

Appropriately-placed disgust and disdain is not the same as hate.

liberals only know hate: hate for races, hate for sexes, hate for themselves, hate for people who dare to think independently, hate for people who do not agree with them.

Quite different.

I think Mia suffered from a Mitt backlash.

You mean you think Romney's near 50 point margin of victory in Utah wasn't quite enough to pull her across the finish line?

If there was one state there wasn't any "Mitt backlash", it was Utah.

Sadly, Mia lost all on her own.

It’s odd and sad that all the “next Sarah Palin’s” are all women. Where are all the courageous and morally upright men? We get stuck with Patreus, Graham, Romney and Scott Brown.

“There was the Libertarian candidate who drew away 5,000 votes—twice as many as Matheson’s 2646-vote margin of victory.”

Yep.

Mia's loss was heartbreaking.

Mia dont run opposite a WHITE+ MORMON+ MALE from a Mormon royalty family next time...

FOUR strikes against you...

You are so full of garbage.

Mia lost because of Salt Lake County, which is majority non-Mormon. A Democrat won the county mayor slot there as well.

She totally cleaned Matheson’s clock in the Mormon strongholds like Utah county, where she got over 70 percent of the vote.

Instead of spouting off your predictable vile dribble, next time actually do some research.

Take your anti-mormon obsession back to the Colofornian pit from whence you came.

And Matheson barely held onto his seat, this is the closest election he’s ever had.

The district sounds liberal, if Utah is normally conservative, and Love was conservative (I assume, I don’t know about the race or the district), and you point out that the district is more libertarian, then that means that they are to the left of Love and lean more to the democrats on social issues and the border.

Libertarians seems to have wrecked everything except the dems plans for the wreck of America

Thinking hard about it, I am probably slightly more libertarian on social issues and more conservative on fiscal issues and defense. Either we are going to have to join up with libertairians or hunt em down like dogs before next election.

That’s what third parties are for; diluting the conservative vote.

I am telling you without a doubt, what we have done has caused our defeat.

We have unemployed enough Americans that we have lost more than 50%.

Granted it was against a Mormon, but then it was Obama.

This is a very, very big problem.

What is needed is a turn away from buying everything International, and a return to buying American.

Now.

Let me say that again:

What we need to do is move away from globalizing, and move toward moving more and more production back to America.

Now.

geez read the whole article - the campaign was a mess - three managers, she was not around for a “major fire” and other city problems. Then in the debates she wanted to end social security and department of education. No chance mothers vote for killing education dept. Who preps these candidates?

Emperor Palpatine disagrees with you my FReind. Lol

Well, I guess that means the liberals took Palpatine's advice to heart.

He presents an interesting challenge to the folks in the legislature, as pointed out by another poster there are a lot of liberals in Salt Lake City. What they have been trying to do in the past is to put as many libs in his district as possible to avoid unpleasant surprises in the other districts. It seems they have decided to sacrifice one district to the Dims to keep the others solid GOP.

BTW Matheson is probably more conservative than many of the West and East coast RINO’s...

Oh no, my young Jedi. You will find that it is you who are mistaken, about a great many things...

*chills* obozo is way too close to Emperor Palpatine — Lucas (a freaking lib btw) was prescient in so many ways.
