Mayan Doomsday 'Safe Zone' Shut Down

Citing fears that doomsday believers, curiosity seekers, and "above all" journalists will flood a French mountaintop on Dec. 21, the supposed day of the Mayan apocalypse, local officials are banning access to the mountain.

The spot, Pic de Bugarach, is rumored to be one of the only safe places on the planet on Dec. 21, according to Raw Story. On that date, a major cycle of the Maya Long Count calendar ends. The calendar is split into several chunks, including 400-year spans called b'ak'tuns. Dec. 21, 2012 on our calendar marks the end of the 13th b'ak'tun and the beginning of a new cycle.

One online rumor holds that on this day of destruction, Pic de Bugarach will open up to reveal an alien spacecraft, which will save believers nearby. That has local officials worried. [End of the World? Top Doomsday Fears]

"We are expecting a few visionaries, a few people who believe in this end of the world, but in extremely limited numbers," state official Eric Freysselinard told Raw Story. "We are expecting greater numbers of people who are just curious, but in numbers we cannot determine. Above all, we are expecting lots of journalists."

In response, officials will call in 100 police and firefighters on Dec. 21 to seal off approaches to the mountain, Freysselinard told Raw Story.

2 Peter 3:3-4 KJV
“Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.”

There have always been scoffers and people blind to the truth of course, but I suspect that on Dec 22nd we may begin to see this fulfilled in full as Peter wrote, he’s indicating here that at the same time, it really is the last days,

No, I think it’s the end of the 12th baktun, not 13th... They had a number system based on 12, instead of 10 like ours.

I think I will sit this one out at home.

By the way I am buying Christmas presents, I am pretty sure my Grandkids will want them Dec. 25th.

“but I suspect that on Dec 22nd we may begin to see this fulfilled in full as Peter wrote, he’s indicating here that at the same time, it really is the last days,”

I would challenge you to come back on December 23rd and defend that prediction.

And what prediction would that be? That so many after Dec 21st passes and nothing happens will make light of this ‘Mayan calender’ end of the world foolishness and begin to be dismissive of any thought to how this age will end?

Or that those walking after the flesh instead of the spirit cant see we’re in the last days,

2 Peter 1:16
“For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.”

I'm so far ahead of you guys: I have been to Chichen Itza Mayan Pyramid in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. I even have a brass Mayan calendar. Where did I put that? I'll find it as it is in this room somewhere.

My experience at the pyramid: There is a very, very, deep body of water there where they threw live women sacrifices.

However, the men didn't get off scott free. There is a huge ball court where two teams of men play. The object is to get the ball through a high set stone circle. The team that gets the ball through the circle (small circle, ball barely fits through the hole) is the winner. The captain of the winning team presents his head to the losing captain and losing captain beheads the winning captain.

It is an honor for the winning captain to be beheaded as that sends him straight to heaven.

I have also been on the tip of the Yucatan in the area where the asteroid landed in the water and destroyed most life on earth.

Now, when I find my brass Mayan calendar, maybe just having the calendar will save my life on Dec. 21. I'll let you know if I'm still alive then, if you are still on earth.

“see we’re in the last days,”

That may be. But putting a close date on things is not sensible.

Maybe this the same space craft that should have been trailing the comet Hale–Bopp and they just got the date wrong. San Diego is a great place to spend Christmas. Personally I need a coat but my back east relatives wear a sweater at night.

During Dec Temps

Average High Temperature: 66°F/19°C
Average Low Temperature: 49°F/9°C

This on the water inland is a little warmer.

It’s just a thought, certainly not a prediction, but given the fact that the Mayan prophecy has no Biblical basis whatsoever, wouldn’t it cause more of a falling-away (or at least create more doubt in Biblical eschatology) if something were to actually happen on 12/21/12?

what date are you talking about?

We’ve been in the last days since Jesus rose from that Tomb on April 13th, 32 AD and 14,000 days later on the 9th day of AV in August of 70 AD the Temple was destroyed and Israel was dispersed throughout the world in the Diaspora,

What I’m talking about here are the signs of the times and this is just one more indicator, for which we are commanded to watch for,

Luke 21:36
“Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.”

We’ve been in the last days since Jesus rose from that Tomb ...

The very words of my Pastor in today's sermon...concluding with the message that no one knows but Him, and none of us should read signs.

And what the heck happened to my speell check? I could have posted this twenty minutes ago if I had not had to go back and fix my own typos...

Interesting, sure,

As you say, this Mayan prophecy is not biblical beyond the sense of a global expectation of something coming, and when it fails to materialize, how it then may discredit in the minds of those with very little knowledge of what the Bible says about the coming close of the age, they throw the baby out with the bath water so to speak,

My point was only that it potentially could fulfill another prophecy towards the return of Jesus. What Peter is saying is that it is ‘the last days’ when they are scoffing, so if this is not the global fulfillment, then something not dissimilar will occur again to coincide when the end is in fact come,

for which we do not know the day or the hour,
