Long Island residents experiences : Cash : - is king. But, we made the mistake of keeping large bills ($50s )....... Heat: I live in a house with oil heating. Without power, the heat turns doesn't work (the hot water follows suite)....... Fuel:- We topped off the tanks, but weren't expecting the gas shortage that ensued. ....Communication:- Phone lines were down and cell phone coverage was affected. I need to come up with a plan for communicating that relies on alternate sources of energy. ......Protection: - Every night I feel as though we're in a fishbowl. With no curtains on the windows, the entire world can see in and I can't see out. .....Training: - we need to be better prepared as a unit. I was the only one who knew where the flashlights and batteries were. I'm the only one who knows how to throw the main breaker or turn on/off the furnace. I will also need to make sure my wife is trained on whatever protection we obtain (shotgun, rifle or otherwise) in case I am incapable of protecting the family.....

A few years back, the husband and I left a movie theater because the sound was too loud. So rarely go to a movie, anyway, because there are so few worth attending.
Did the house in the middle picture have built up natural burms around it?

Those two relatives will be visiting this week for Thanksgiving and also at Christmas. If they bring up movie at Christmas since they will have more days here, they can go but not me. I thought my head would explode - no one should have sound that loud in the ears. The husband of those two already has a hearing problem. He didn’t get that from movies, but it can’t be helping his already decreased hearing in one ear.
We might want to consider an post on the alternate communications thing mentioned by one of their posters about cells and landlines not working.
I used to be big into CB’s a while back. I still have a couple of mobils an two handheld. I bought a Midland base station that has am, fm, noaa and twoway radio options, along with flashlight, hand crank, ac charger and alternate aaa batteries.
That along with a couple of 32 mile handheld that have the two way plus NOAA. Rechargable, ac or aa batteries are the options.
Have not tried them out yet but if someone has please let us know.
Why did those people build their farm out in the middle of a lake? :)

Actually, we have a kitchen range that s quite simple. It was a gas stove, that we had converted to propane. I can light it with a match if the power goes out and the electronic ignition doesn’t work, for heat, we have a wood stove that isnt designed gor coming in the livingroom. It has a large flattop, so I can and do, cook on it, I have some enameled Dutch ovens that I use on that stove for cooking all the time. I use it for applications that are low and slow, and I love the idea that I’m using the wood that we heat the house with to cook, and we aren’t paying twice, once to heather house, and once to heat the food.
The only way we could be more efficient would be to also heat our water, and we usually have two stock pots of water on the wood stove filled with water, which I use to wash dishes. Eventually, we would like to do something with the wood stove and coiled copper tubing to heat water for showers, etc.
If we were to get the Bio Lite stove, it would be a backup, that would allow us to charge cell phones and iPads. I’m impressed with the technology and at $129.00, it is pretty reasonable. When the weather is too hot to cook inside with the wood stove, I could fire that puppy up outside to cook and keep the indoor temp bearable!
That would also be a backup, as I have a large grill (wood fired BBQ) that I use all the time to cook entire meals. With meat on one side and a skillet or saucepan on the other. I have preps for cooking off grid and use them all the time.
I keep an MSR Dragonfly stove in a 50 cal ammo can, along with two fuel bottles of white gas and a spare gallon of white gas handy. I can load it with regular gasoline or convert it to diesel, if necessary. My kids and I cook on it during the summer, just to make sure it’s working.
Good advise on testing your gear. My MSR stove was giving me fits, so I finally did some maintenance and replaced the original factory pump with a new model. It now runs (and sounds) like a jet engine.
I also have isobutane “Pocket Rocket” stoves, along with hand-made alcohol stoves. I keep three filled propane tanks handy, and can use those on my backyard grill which has a separate stove burner.
I’m watching the news this morning and FOX seems to have a habit of hosting bitchy, whiny survivors who think that their house deserves some special attention. THOUSANDS of homes were destroyed and they’re bitching about “disaster” relief. In any other country, they’re be pulling hundreds or even thousands of bodies out of the mud and the entire world would be mounting massive relief efforts. Sure, some people died, but everybody left behind has significantly better options than the rest of the world. They need to nut up and get on with reconstruction. Going on FOX News isn’t going to help.
Agreed. Seconds count...but I can only base what I post here on my own experiences and my own environs. In my setup, there would be time, 99% of the time, to don hearing protection.
