WHAT happened to apples?
November 21,2012

Posted on 11/21/2012 11:59:47 AM PST by SE Mom

Sooo...today I'm making my annual Thanksgiving apple crisp, a labor intensive project (peel, core and slice 2-3 dozen apples).

I went to the store and bought 2 bags of Rome and Granny Smith with a few loose Mac's and Golden Delicious. I noticed none of them had that apple fragrance but brought them home and started peeling and slicing.

Wait a second...none of them have an apple scent even when I cut them open..wonder how they taste..sliced off a few bites from each variety and what do you know..they don't TASTE like apples. They LOOK gorgeous..but they taste ...like...cold, crispy, crunchy...nothing. NOTHING!!!!!

What the hell have they done to apples? Are they being genetically engineered now to look great but taste..blah? Did Michelle outlaw flavor in fruits to decrease our sweets intake? Is there a grinch somewhere who stole all the real apples?

Anyone else finding this happening with apples and/or other fruits?

In general, fruits and vegetables are reportedly 30-40% less
nutritious than they were a generation ago. That is because the producers are creating produce genetically engineered for appearances, to look better or convenience by devoting resources, to say, creating seedless watermelon without those black seeds, instead of making them taste better or more nutritious. I’m sure apples are just as equally being cross-bred for appearance and not for the crisp flavor we all remember back in the day.

The worst ones are those that didn’t fall very far from the tree.

Apples are easy to grow, I have a tree that produces a small amount of adequate apples from a half whisky barrel.

I have two apple trees. Both of them are a type which can grow in Northern Florida. They are edible but that is about it.

I also have two pear trees. One is what I call “sand pears”. They are no good at all. The other one is a Bartlet pear tree and it produces delicious pears.

The best thing I have is a Japanese persimmon. They are very large and really good.

Haven’t had any problems with store-bought apples here in Northwest Illinois this year. Very tasty, fragrant and have kept well. I think you got a bad batch.

Still....a piece of fresh-sliced apple makes great bait for clearing out the family of chipmunks from around my house - six caught and exiled to the woods in one week......

I think you just set a record!

6 isn't a record. I've seen a eight and a nine before. The nine was intentional, however, so I don't think it counts.

There are rumors* that JimRob himself once got drunk on a dark, moonless night and got 12 in a row after his mouse was struck by lightning and supercharged, but that's probably just baseless legend.

*There is a strong possibility that I just made this up

I was in the jungle in Taiwan and a local field helper climbed up a banana tree and cut down a HUGE bunch of bananas (like 30 in a single clump). The crew grabbed a bunch and offered me to join in.

Very small (1/3 to 1/2 the size of our bananas) and mottled black and brown skin - looked rotten. The guy showed me one peeled and it looked good, and it had an overpowering smell of banana (like banana taffy candy or something).

And the taste was UNBELIEVABLE!! I was amazed at how strong the banana flavor was (like a taffy or candy) - and the texture of the “meat” was firm yet smooth. There was really NO comparison to our bland, mushy stuff we get in the stores.

I’m a big fan of the Honeycrisp apple for eating.

Unbalanced nutrients, growing season temperatures, irrigation, etc can cause fruit to not flavor up to potential. Also, most if not all non-organic apples (pomme fruits) that your grocer sells are hybrids and or genetically altered primarily for appearance. The hybrid crossing of varieties and or manipulation of the genetics to any plant species in order to produce a positive characteristic usually has some degree of negative affect as well. There are many fruits marketed today that suffer from loss of flavor compared to their parent varieties. Suggestion; smell and taste organically grown fruits for comparison.

The name for the process is called respiration or CA storage.

Connecticut law places requirements on the length of time fruit must remain in CA conditions to qualify as CA-certified. Usually the apples go to retail market in late January.

Here in NH we had an unusally warm March followed by a frost that killed most of the buds. The resulting apple crop was decimated. I personally had less than a dozen apples off of my three tree. In previous years I threw away multiple wheel barrow fulls of drops. Therefore, this year apples are mostly coming out of Washington state where they had a huge crop this year.

FYI, my personal favorite is the Honey Crisp variety. Best eating apple EVER. Please do not tell anyone else :) They are already about double the price of regular apples.

I understand we’re due for big food cost jumps next year due to the drought and cost of fuel.

Rush was so funny today....warning people to freeze their Thanksgiving leftovers for next year...b/c we won’t be able to afford Thanks dinner next year. :)
