If Every U.S. State Declared War Against the Others, Which Would Win?
Slate ^ | 11/29/2012

Posted on 11/29/2012 5:27:14 PM PST by djf

This question originally appeared on Quora. It was taken from Quora's "hypothetical battles" topic, where readers "can ask questions and get answer on fighting that wouldn't likely or ever happen in real life."

Answer by Jon Davis, veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps:

These are the accounts of the Second American Civil War, also known as the Wars of Reunification and the American Warring States Period. ... Here are the states that held the greatest strategic value from day one. They have the ability to be self-sufficient, economic strength, military strength, the will to fight, and the population to support a powerful war machine.

California Texas New York

Others that have many of the qualities that gave them an advantage are also listed.

Washington Colorado Illinois Virginia Florida Georgia

I really don’t understand why supply ships from Asia/South America/wherever wouldn’t be headed over anyway — entreprenurial spirit does not entirely die with war.

I am in Washington State (eastern part of the state — arid — more like western Texas) and am familiar with both Alaska and Hawaii. I don't think you have spent much time hanging around banana farms or coffee or sugar cane plantations (of course, many other tropical or sub-tropical crops can be grown). Not much of a problem starting a fire -- have you seen the lava dripping into the sea recently? Seriously, Hawaiian military bases have plenty of methods to make fire! On the outer islands of Hawaii and distant reaches of Alaska cars are not that important — no or few roads in peripheral Alaska and no compelling reason to take a touristy drive around the island in Hawaii during a civil war! Not sure why local transportation is a big issue, or the other comforts of current day life. The scenario is addressing a time when few or no of those luxuries will be available in any state.

I’m guessing Wyoming has more ICBMs than Texas.

Hint... The IC in ICBM means Intercontinental.

Washington DC wins because they control the CCC & leadership.

I don’t know what CCC means, there’s no leadership in DC and DC is not a State. (It’s a cesspool)

Hint: That’s how far they can go, and doesn’t preclude a short shot.

I worked on Minuteman III, Mk 12 Re-entry Systems, in addition to MMI&II, and Titan II.

Thinking about what would happen in my home state of Alabama. Since we can’t sustain a welfare state, there would probably be a mass exodus of people going to places that could or would at least try, and those who didn’t move would have to fend for themselves. There would probably some unrest in the cities as the state adjusted to the new economy. My home county would be in good shape as far as the riots go so long as we control the bridges. Alabama has resources, but would still need to form an alliance with other states for economic and defense issues.

I'd put Michigan at the top of the list. The only viable direction of attack is from the south since we've got the great lakes on three sides of us. Unlimited fresh water and other natural resources. Literally hundreds of thousands of active hunters and more non-hunters who are still firearm enthusiasts.......

Protect our southern boarder while the rest of the states battle it out amongst themselves........

I find it amusing that the folks in the states that tried it before, are suggesting that the folks who kicked their ass couldn’t do it again.

CCC = military Command, Control, Communications

If you think they would politely sit it out because they are not a State, then they also have bridges to sell you.

“Cross our border and yeah you’ll feel our wrath...”

What about right-leaning Californians (such as myself) looking to defect?

“The “Texas Republic” of this story wouldn’t be looking to conquer California to reunify the country, but defend themselves and prevent LA, SanFran, Chicago, New York, etc. from imposing on them.”

And possibly bringing the parasite populations in Austin, Houston and DFW to heel.

Texas. Resources and People and Terrain. No doubt. Of course, a few other States have nukes.

i agree, since we are the only state with an intentional by-pass, no other state would even think about us until late in the war. We have our own state bank, state grain elevator and an ecomomy in the black. Texas sounds like a great pick, but everyone else knows that too so most likely the other states would gang up on Texas from the start.

***And how are things with that ongoing invasion from Mexico City?

***There’s millions of parasites currently invading your state from the south. In many ways they are already imposing their will on Texas. Texas would do no better in a hypothetical civil war based upon the ‘real’ war currently ongoing. Arizona would beat you.

As a Missourian, I cannot really speak for Texas, but so long as it is a part of the USA the immigrant invasion from Mexico is really the responsibility of federal government. As Az has found, there isn’t much a state government can do but make noise on the issue,

There is a lot of stupid crap in the article anyway. What kind of moron thinks we’ll all starve on the great lakes region?

Chances are, that if you can trace to 1066, there was royalty in your bloodline.

I traced my father’s lines back into the 400’s... lot of royals, knights, kings, queens, etc. of almost any country in Europe that you can name.

However, keep in mind that there was LOTS of inter-marriages between royal relatives. Maybe that could explain some things. :-)
