LANSING, MI -- There's something very, very strange in these old woods.
That's what some neighbors in the area of St. Joseph Highway and Upton Road in Delta Township say, at least.
Brad Wallen has encountered what he described as a wolf-like creature six times in the past three months, and as recently as Wednesday when it darted through his backyard. He said he's never seen anything like it before.
"I'm guessing this thing is between 65 and 80 pounds," he said. "It's not afraid of humans. It walks right out into the yard and lays down."
Wallen said the beast has made several trips onto his property. On one such occasion, Wallen was able to snap a couple pictures. Even then, the creature wasn't scared away.
"That's the thing that worries me the most -- I walked out back and it just sat there looking at me, and it's not afraid of me," Wallen said. "It psyched me out. For it not to be running or hiding, it alarmed me.
"I'm 225 pounds, and it just kind of looked at me like, 'Why don't you come a little bit closer, old man, and see how fast I can catch you?'"

Looks like a slightly wolfie version of a coyote to me.
They are all genus Canis and theoretically could breed with dogs if they were so inclined.
I don’t know who says that but they’re wrong, eastern coyotes are wolf/coyote hybrids. That said they are pretty elusive unless it’s a pet turned loose or it’s rabid.
The eastern coyotes are descended from the wolves that migrated down from canada eons ago. So it’s quite possible to have one that large or to have a hybrid.
Wild dogs have a cat like look to them. The look in this guy’s eyes makes me think of a cat.
Gorgeous animal. Wonder if there’s a female in heat near by.
Yeah I can’t understand why the DNR told him that wolves can’t breed with coyotes. A canine is a canine is a canine.
Its like saying that whites can’t breed with asians.
I know I’ve seen some damn big prints in the woods around here south of Lansing.
Looks like an interesting wolfdoggie project...
It’s Lassie! Pull Timmy out of the well!
I don’t think it unheard of for a wolf to breed with a coyote (or dog), but their heat cycles make it unlikely from what I have read. I had what I thought were coydogs around for a while. Turned out they were just huge, healthy coyotes.
This guy is really beautiful. The fact that he doesn’t seem to show any fear of humans makes me wonder if he was initially a “pet”?
There are a LOT of coyotes in Michigan these days. I was out with the dogs a bit ago and could hear them yipping just a few hundred yards away just outside town.
Lucky for the coyotes them Jack Russell’s didn’t find them!
So, from your post, it sounds like you are tracking unusually large Asians in the woods south of Lansing. Are you sure thats legal?
Could be a Gray wolf but more than likely a Coyote in full winter coat. People can get confused on the weight because of a good coat.
The best way to tell is by the size of the tracks. Wolf 3.5” W 4.5” L Coyote 1.5” W 2.5” L
If I knew how to post photos I could show you pictures of my neighbors pet Coyote playing with a Boxer. Even being around people for 3 or 4 years it was still very skittish although I could pet it when it was in a good mood.
Yeah, and its Mother was so cute in the moonlight - - - - .
Obviously a werewolf.
