IBD ^ | 30 Nov 2012 | Patrick Seitz

Apple's (AAPL) iPhone gets more media attention, but smartphones running Google's (GOOG) Android operating system are beating it in the marketplace. Android was the top U.S. smartphone platform in the third quarter, with a three-month average market share of 53.6%, up 1.4 percentage points from Q2, research firm ComScore reported Friday.

Apple's iPhone platform added 0.9 percentage point to 34.3% smartphone market share in Q3. Research In Motion's (RIMM) BlackBerry, Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows and Symbian all lost share...

I can;t believe that people lined up for the iPhone 5 that had features (some that actually worked) available in Android OS 2 or 3 releases ago.

That Galaxy commercial mocking the iPhone lines was pretty dead on.

My son drove me to the Verizon store last night to insist I upgrade to the Droid 4. He has had a Droid for a few years now, has recently upgraded to the Droid Razr HD, and was tired of me always wanting to look something up on his phone while we were out and about. I have also “borrowed” his Nexus, pretty permanently.

I determined years ago I wouldn’t get involved in the Apple hype. I like my PCs, and I have enjoyed the Droid line of products.

I’m hooked on the Droid OS. I currently use a Droid Razr Max and Xyboard tablet. My wife has the Droid 2 R2-D2 edition (yea, I know, but at least it isn’t Hello Kitty).

Both systems have their advantages. Apple is good out of the box, especially for people who already have a lot of iTunes based music and media.

Android is more for tinkerers and gadget freaks who like to play around with and customize their phone. You can personalize the Droid system to you much better than you can the Apple OS.

I’ve had both been with iOS for for 5 years switched to a galaxy s3 recently and I’ve come to the conclusion they both do the same thing but just different button prompts but ultimately they are both great operating systems.

This is an unfair comparison because you have one phone with iOS going against probably about a 100

Not surprising, iPhone 5 wasn't out yet and sales had slowed in anticipation.

There's also ONE new iPhone release each year and dozens of Droid devices of all shapes, sizes, utility, upgradeability, OS versions, etc.

I have neither.

"Google Android Crushing Apple iPhone In U.S."

No Apple fanboy here by ANY means, but I've always found statements like this to be somewhat misleading. Apple iPhone is a single device/platform, on one type of phone, running mainly on a single carrier. Android can be on many many phones across virtually all of the carriers/providers. OF COURSE Android is going to be more heavily used than Apple. It simply has more 'saturation', being more readily accessible.

My iphone is three years old and still as fast as ever. As for your categorical remarks, Iphone looks good next to my 762 semi.

In computers good enough and cheaper always wins. Apple made this same mistake a generation ago with PC’s and Microsoft.

Now they have made the same mistake with Phones and perhaps tablets with Google.

Microsoft also made a huge mistake in letting other vendors standards get established in these devices. Buyers don’t feel compelled to buy their products anymore and that is a big deal for them.

Interesting times.

Had my own company made as many “mistakes” as Apple, I’d be far wealthier than I am.

I had a Droid for three years or so, and then I replaced it with a Galaxy SIII. I really like these phones. They’re the first computer device that I’ve had in a long time that motivate me to learn more about them, trying to find new ways to tweak them to do more of what I want. It’s fun! I’ve tried iOS stuff too, and they’re great products that work really well, but are sort of boring compared to Android stuff.

I do think the headline is a bit misleading, iOS is still gaining market share too, just not as quickly. It would be more accurate to say that Android and iOS are absolutely crushing everything else.

I prefer the Iphone for one reason. It isn’t laggy , crappy software.

Features/Smeachers-— take it from someone who knows about code; Andriod is crapware.

Ever notice no matter how powerful the hardware running andriod gets, or no matter how many cores they add (phone or tablet), it is always still choppy and laggy, it’s almost like bricks in motion.

Until they get that figured out, which I don’t think they ever will based on the way it is coded, I won’t touch Andriod. Paying all that money for a laggy experience doesn’t do it for me. When I touch something I want it to register right away, when I touch type, I don’t want the letters appears in groups 2 seconds after I actually touched the key.

I’m not apple fanboy either. I build my own super PCs, but for phones, it is no contest.

Everything google makes is total crap and half-baked. Ever notice most of their “services” never make it out of beta label and/or get abandoned?

Look up “messenger bag”... Basically a briefcase with a shoulder strap. Yes, you can find them overly-fancy if you want to make a fashion statement. (ie. lean toward the man-purse end of the spectrum). Or you can find them in high-dollar leather, or you can go more rugged with canvas etc. I use one (Swiss Army) occasionally going too and from work. Less lately since I’ve been resolved to quit bringing work home with me. ;-) But when I have to carry a briefcase like bag to hold stuff, I like the messenger bag style (or backpack style) since it keeps your hands free coffee, keys, lights, knives, guns... Gives you options...

What about a basic phone, with email and a searching device? No need for music ( is that the original word for ITunes?), or the other modern thingies.

My dear, very unfancy DH has a BBerry, and I want to get him something bigger as he bumbles with the small keyboard. but he has absolutely no desire for any apps beyond what comes with the phone itself-— like weather and messaging.

So - for a guy like that, is the iPhone-5 just about right? BTW- he is 85 and still working. So you see why no interest beyond basics.

My advice on any technology field - celebrate diversity! LOL Whether it be computers, smartphones, cars, firearms, etc. there is no one best. Use what works for you and meets your priorities. In my family alone we have a mix of Linux, Windows, and Mac OS systems, Android phones, iPhones, Japanese cars, American trucks, Glock Ruger and S&W...

But Apple produces the OS and the hardware while Android runs on a variety os separately manufactured platforms. So 34% of the market is quite a feat when one considers that the monies for phone and OS are going to the same company.

Wow! There's finally SOMETHING I was ahead of the curve on. But, because my wife's son-in-law (my step son-in-law??) is an engineer and HE had a 'Droid, and HIS son who is in college studying to be a computer software engineer has a 'Droid, I decided 18 months ago when I had to get a new phone that it would be a 'Droid.

The Google maps/navigation feature alone makes it worth it.

Success is often fleeting. What products do they have coming online that is going to maintain this success?

It hasn't fled yet. As for upcoming products, if they do Apple TV just right, that will be another game changer. What else might be in the pipeline, only time will tell. They aren't turning off the lights in Sunnyvale just yet.

The problem is their Genius is dead and Microsoft’s retired a long time ago. Google’s are still young.

Yes, Steve Jobs is indeed dead. In the long, long term, that might - or might not - prove problematic. And, as you say, Google's geniuses are still young. Still lots of time for them to make their own horrible mistakes. Again, time will tell.

I’m no google fanboy, I have real privacy concerns about them. Just seeing reality as it is.

Glad to hear you're on top of things.

I hope all 3 companies do very well, it’s best to see real competition instead of one dominant company.

I hope their shareholders do well. And I don't think there is any real risk of that "one dominant company" taking over; competition is real and it will have its way.

Unfortunately in the computer world, companies and developers crave standards. The winner tends to become a monopoly. (see Microsoft)

With the dominance of the Internet maybe this paradigm has changed? But I’m not convinced. It’s always easy bring in the hot new name in the computer world vs what actually works well.

With any Google software product, you need to remember one thing: You are not the customer. You are the product.

I agree entirely, and I do not use Google services for that reason.

However Android tablets do not require you to be connected to Google. They'd like you to log in, but none of that is even remotely required. I have an older Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 here; it was in other hands before (a company unit) and is configured for a Google account that I don't even have a password for. This doesn't prevent me from using it. I also had a Nexus 7 tablet a few months back (bought for my parents,) and it has no connection to Google either. It's just a small computer; you can configure it to reveal all your inner thoughts, or you can configure it to be silent. Nexus 7 came preloaded with Google Widgets that insisted on a login. I dragged them into trash; that's all that I had to do, essentially.

But if you want to mess with Google you can always create a junk account, enter entirely fake personal data, and have it all connected. Google will know about this account's browsing habits, but it would be pretty hard to attach a real name to it, unless you give it to them voluntarily. In exchange they offer you some convenience. Perhaps this would work for some uses but not for the other.

To compare Android tablets to Apple products: iPad requires your Apple ID to activate; this instantly binds the tablet to your real name. Android tablets require no activation; the Nexus 7 came ready for use out of the box, I only had to charge it up.

I find it humerous that people get all butt hurt when other people spend their money on an apple product VS some other brand

I buy what ever I like and like what I buy.

For at least a little longer now its still a free country.

I wouldn't give google a penny because they are helping King Obama.

Microsoft either. Just cause their technology sucks.

I love all my Apple products. Expensive ? Yeah maybe. I bust butt to earn a good living so for me, not so much.

I couldn't care less if others want to use two tin cans and a piece of string if that makes them happy though.

I’m a HTC fanboy. My wife and daughter always ask for my phone when we are out and about to take pictures. My old MyTouch Slide was recently borrowed to replace a broken phone.

Everyone else in the household has Samsungs, and they love their phones, but mine is always the last one working on a long trip or in a place with little service.

And even with the huge abuse I give to my phones, they have always stood up to the worst I could throw at them.

All that said, had Windows Phone come out just a little sooner, I probably would have gone with that, or if iPhone had gone carrier independent instead of demanding a piece of profits, I might have gone there. As it is, HTC is my maker of choice.
