I always wished that the man-purse would catch in the US. Think of how well a full-size handgun would fit inside one

Perhaps a laptop bag will work for you. They come in different sizes and are typically carried on a shoulder strap. A side pocket can be easily made to access the contents.

We just bought a round of “Nexus-7” tablets for the family. At $250/unit it’s a bargain!

Much better than the Nexus 6...

“And I don’t think there is any real risk of that “one dominant company” taking over; competition is real and it will have its way.”

Unfortunately in the computer world, companies and developers crave standards. The winner tends to become a monopoly. (see Microsoft)

With the dominance of the Internet maybe this paradigm has changed? But I’m not convinced. It’s always easy bring in the hot new name in the computer world vs what actually works well.

With any Google software product, you need to remember one thing: You are not the customer. You are the product.

I agree entirely, and I do not use Google services for that reason.

However Android tablets do not require you to be connected to Google. They'd like you to log in, but none of that is even remotely required. I have an older Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 here; it was in other hands before (a company unit) and is configured for a Google account that I don't even have a password for. This doesn't prevent me from using it. I also had a Nexus 7 tablet a few months back (bought for my parents,) and it has no connection to Google either. It's just a small computer; you can configure it to reveal all your inner thoughts, or you can configure it to be silent. Nexus 7 came preloaded with Google Widgets that insisted on a login. I dragged them into trash; that's all that I had to do, essentially.

But if you want to mess with Google you can always create a junk account, enter entirely fake personal data, and have it all connected. Google will know about this account's browsing habits, but it would be pretty hard to attach a real name to it, unless you give it to them voluntarily. In exchange they offer you some convenience. Perhaps this would work for some uses but not for the other.

To compare Android tablets to Apple products: iPad requires your Apple ID to activate; this instantly binds the tablet to your real name. Android tablets require no activation; the Nexus 7 came ready for use out of the box, I only had to charge it up.

I find it humerous that people get all butt hurt when other people spend their money on an apple product VS some other brand

I buy what ever I like and like what I buy.

For at least a little longer now its still a free country.

I wouldn't give google a penny because they are helping King Obama.

Microsoft either. Just cause their technology sucks.

I love all my Apple products. Expensive ? Yeah maybe. I bust butt to earn a good living so for me, not so much.

I couldn't care less if others want to use two tin cans and a piece of string if that makes them happy though.

I’m a HTC fanboy. My wife and daughter always ask for my phone when we are out and about to take pictures. My old MyTouch Slide was recently borrowed to replace a broken phone.

Everyone else in the household has Samsungs, and they love their phones, but mine is always the last one working on a long trip or in a place with little service.

And even with the huge abuse I give to my phones, they have always stood up to the worst I could throw at them.

All that said, had Windows Phone come out just a little sooner, I probably would have gone with that, or if iPhone had gone carrier independent instead of demanding a piece of profits, I might have gone there. As it is, HTC is my maker of choice.

I use hotspot service on my phone to hook up three Nexus 7s in my carpool. Mine runs Waze on the dash as the best realtime GPS money can buy, the other two are mostly browsing the net. We love our Nexus 7s and wouldn’t trade them for anything.

And how much profit does Google realize on each Android handset sold?

I personally do not trust Google anymore. Their “Do no evil” mantra is plain cr@p, evidenced by their overriding the privacy settings on the Safari browser and tracking your web browsing. Plus, the Google CEO was sitting on the Apple board when the iPhone was in development, and the course of Android development went from being a Blackberry knock-off to ripping off the iPhone design.

And, jut like the PC platform, Android is starting to be targetd by malware.

I have used both Android (DroidX) and iPhone4. I prefer the Apple solution. 27” iMac, MacBook Pro, MacBooks, iPads, iPhones, iPods and AppleTV. Oh, also a Time Capsule. I also no longer buy my entertainment on physical media anymore. Who wants to deal with discs?

As far as Samsung, they infringed on Apple’s patents on earlier products. So, they have lost my future business, from kitchen appliances to upgrading my TVs next year.

I have a messenger bag. Most are too big. I don’t need to carry much...just a PX4 Storm and a couple spare mags. 5.11 makes a perfect messenger bag, but it just screams “GUN!” because they only come in tactical colors. I got one anyway because there may come a day when you want to scream “GUN!” to keep the disillusioned Obama voters at bay once their entitlement checks stop coming.

Thanks to the iPad, there is now a perfect-sized bag that holds the iPad and the gun.

I’m typing this on my Galaxy S III. I like it, cracked screen and all! Mental note: don’t sit down with it in your pants pocket next time. Pretty tough, but not flexible!

Oh no! My fear is that I'd do exactly what you did if I got a Galaxy.:) I just upgraded my phone to a Samsung "My Touch" Droid. Really like it! Not as big as the Galaxy so you can fit it in your front pocket if need be.

I like your notes on the Google ID, but to put it clearer: you have no need to ever buy or install anything through Google for an Android device. You can buy ebooks through any number of marketplaces, media from anyone. With iOS you must buy everything through Apple.

IOS is also completely proprietary, whereas Android is open source. I’ve got tens of thousands of techies out there looking for hidden code that might reveal what I don’t want to give out.

And there is the part that really marks the difference for me as an end user - Apple owns their universe, Google just bakes cookies to invite you to the dark side.

I love my iPhone too. Have had it about a year and I love how user friendly it is. Previously had a blackberry and was blown away when I decided to get an iPhone. I’m not a Techno geek, so I appreciate the user friendly aspect and even the touch screen.

Yeah that tiny screen on IPhone for tiny d&$@&. I have the Samsung Note with nice big 5.3 inch screen. Android’s ecosystem is just more flexible. You can make every phone look different with all the widgets, etc. In addition with the great variety of Android phones. Apple with its overpriced hardware is in danger of going down the same path it has in the PC market.

My work "upgraded" my old Blackberry 9780 to a Samsung Galaxy IIS.

Although it had a nice, big, pretty screen, the latter worked so poorly that I dug the old BB out of the mothballs and reverted to using it.

That said, I have an Android phone for personal use and find that it's OK so long as it's not integrated with an enterprise e-mail server.

"Now they have made the same mistake with Phones and perhaps tablets with Google."

It is simply a different path to profits. And man, are they profitable.

From a June 2012 article...

" Apple impressively generated 71 percent of the industry's operating profit with only 6.5 percent of the global handset market, according to Canaccord. "

I suppose they could go after the remaining 29% by doing 15 times as much work, but you would have to ask why.

Others can divide the crumbs. It would seem Apple is quite pleased with their approach. They keep doing it.

And I wonder if this profit includes Apps, Books, Videos, TV Shows and Music? Their ecosystem seems a great model.
