On the flip side of the coin, if my conservative dad was still alive and he had a son-in-law who voted for Obama, he would have shot him....many times then reloaded and kept shooting.
My “advice” is base on experience. But make no mistakes, if one is going to go that route it cannot be done with out the consent of your wife.
This is what I did....I explained to my wife what her father was doing. And that it was not his place to insert himself and his opinions into our household. I made it clear to her that if her father were successful with this disowning me over the issue at hand, that divorce was our future as the logical conclusion of his activities. That it was about power.
The key here is to do things calmly...explain where they will inevitably lead and did she want to go there. When presented to my wife calmly she understood. She was not happy about my methods but understood that I had no other leverage with my father-in-law and that I needed to assert my authority.
I sucked up big time to my mother in law, but she too understood why I did what I did and agreed that if I acquiesced it would have only gotten worse.
I was also in the military and I’m 5th year electrical engineering. Most engineers I know are Republicans...except the blacks. I’m not college age, just in college. I have adult black friends, and they all voted for Obama.
Every student and professor are not liberals.
My mother went several years not talking to me when she found out I voted for W. This election she just looked looked at me and sighed, and said words to the fact that she didn’t feel like voting since my vote would cancel out hers.
I come from a family on BOTH sides of yellow dog democrats. I either did the smartest thing in my teenage life or the dumbest (depending on who is telling the tale) one summer when I was looking for things to put on high school transcript so I could get into a good college. I volunteered to help my congresswoman at the time, who was Millicent Fenwick, along with some other high school kids.
Best education I ever got. Fantastic. Unfortunately, I turned on my parents and became a Republican.
I’ve learned to bite my tongue at family events lest they turn into a “point/counterpoint” like an old SNL skit. It’s not ideal, but it keeps the peace if only out of respect for my mom and dad.
I concur. I might not have made it clear, but I don’t like identity politics. We won’t win the pandering to groups game against the dems. Not to mention, it will put off our base and cause low turnout.
10/10!
“Plus, Im assuming you want to keep seeing the grandkids.”
Well done sir. Well done.
You failed to mention any of that in the prior post. Of course, that changes the situation.
I, too, know very few blacks who didn’t votre for obama. My nephew-in-law (is that a “thing”?) is black and voted for obama in ‘08. This time he didn’t for two reasons: (1) Illegal aliens coming in with hussein’s blessing who are taking jobs from Americans, and (2) Hussein removing the requirement to work for welfare.
My sister’s co-worker is like obama in that he is half white and half black. He voted for obama in ‘08 but not in ‘12. Reason: He’s offended that obama disses his white mother, and uses his blackness as a tool to take advantage of, well, everything.
Some people are coming around. Obviously, not many and not enough.
My bad. It was really close to bedtime and my brain wasn’t operating on all cylinders.
Hopefully more people wake up like you stated in your examples. The inner city vote is lost forever. All they want is free stuff. They have no principles, no pride, and no desire to better themselves.
My worry now is that they’ll pass amnesty, and our next nominee will be Jeb Bush. Demographically speaking, we might never have a conservative president again. I hope I’m proven wrong.
Most radical leftists are closed minded tyrants and filled w hate. I feel bad for your spouse though.
That is a PERFECT true letter!
Thanks, guys.
Thanks guys.
Here's a good one because Republicans got crushed a year ago by O by looking like they oppose middle class tax cuts in defense of the rich tax cuts, and they seem to want to repeat that now.
But where was Rush on this?
Rush December 21, 2011 on FICA payroll tax cut standoff:
The House Republicans, the freshmen, the Tea Party conservatives, the other conservatives in the House are holding firm on this on principle. Even some in the media are saying the House Republicans are acting on principal, not politics. Everybody else is looking at this through the optics. And as I mentioned in the first hour the Wall Street Journal has an editorial that just excoriates the Republicans in the House and essentially accuses them of losing the tax issue to Obama and guaranteeing that Obama is gonna end up being the king tax cutter in an election year.
Now, if they want to stop it, Wall Street Journal, Republicans, if they want to stop this, explain whats really going on here. Explain that this isnt a tax cut. Since when did Social Security taxes, when were they actually called tax increases? These are contributions. These are actual deductions from your pay that end coming back to you this is how its always been sold in your retirement years, in your golden years. Theoretically its your money. All were doing is defunding the only mechanism that funds Social Security. If they want to stop this, then just explain that this is draining money from Social Security without any of the necessary reforms. Throw it right back on Obama and what hes doing here. The worst possible position is the one supported by the Senate, Obama, and the Wall Street Journal.

Don't Doubt Me!
Welcome to Free Republic. :~)
Imagining that any random person who is currently an American citizen has "40 or so years left in life" proves that you do not understand the gravity of our current political, social, and economic situation.
True, and I generally do subscribe to that, but actually I never voiced my opinion with him. He heard it from his wife, who actually found out overhearing other conversations.
With age comes wisdom. This is the natural progression and is true with you. But due to the screwed up times we live in, taking lots of meds, not so true with many others. Speaking here from personal experience but often the older they get the more stupid and vile they get. Backstabbing too. John McCain is a public example of this same as Arlen Spector. McCain can be very good such as right now on Benghazi but next week we will be in full sabotage mode. Mood swings? Medication influenced mood swings?
It's too bad I can't get you and my father in law in the same room!
Yes, I was pro-life before my own child was born, but I haven't always been pro-life. I grew up in an environment where a "woman's right to choose" was sacrosanct and unquestioned, and it wasn't until I started to learn about the other side of the argument, and experience a bit of how the world really works, that I began to consider and then subscribe to the view that life begins at conception, and that life should be protected against even its own mother's "decision". I confess that I don't personally have a very strong opinion on gays in the military. If the military leadership said, "we can't do this, it would hurt morale, discipline, etc.", I would support them. The current military leadership (and I certainly understand those who believe that they are illegitimate or somehow compromised in being able to express the truth) seems to be OK with it, so I'm probably OK with it.
