Two Southaven Police Shoot and Kill Two Dogs

Two Southaven police officers shot and killed two dogs in the same day.

The chief of police calls these types of incidents extremely rare, but anytime an officer fires a weapon there's an investigation to make sure all procedures were followed.

Southaven police said the animals became aggressive and had to be shot.

"Normally this is a quiet neighborhood," said neighbor Walter Husley.

Husley was outside smoking a cigarette late Wednesday night when he heard the commotion from the street.

"I heard three, what sounded like to be gunshots," he said.

Investigators said a pit bull was attacking a smaller dog and wouldn't let go.

Neighbors said the scuffle between the dogs started in a yard and folks on the street were trying to separate them, even using a water hose,

"Eventually, animal control had to be called and the dog was shot here in the other neighbors yard just next to where the fight began," said Husley.

"I poked my head out the door and I saw this dog kind of laying the yard over there," he continued.

On the same day during another routine arrest, another dog broke loose from its chain and became combative with another officer.

Other than an occasional bark, neighbors say the dogs stay pretty quiet up until Wednesday.

"It's a pretty massive pit bull, they were always gentle to me and never had any problems with my dog when she was in the backyard" said Husley.

The dog's owner was cited for the animal being lose, while internal affairs reviews the other incident.

The dog being attacked was injured but at last check was expected to survive.

Action News 5 let you know when the second investigation is complete.

Not the same as our usual police dog killers. This was justified. But why the other dog?

Rare, but common.

Sounds like justifiable dogicide.

Somewhere a dog loving geek is ordering some Dragonskin body armor, and is looking into a remotely controlled by camera device that will fire some sort of defensive weapon, could be tear gas, could be a mass of high voltage darts, could be anything.

I’m just saying when you gets pushed to the cliff you either push back or jump, and I think people are fed up with jumping off of cliffs.

it doesn’t take much for officers to shoot anything nowaday. depriving you of life or’liberty is nothing compared to “officer safety.”

Screw officer safety. they’re just shy of murdering people with ccw permits cause one of the idiots with badges will scream “HE’S GOT A GUN!”

“Officer Safety” in my day was a goof in a funny costume. Not a paramountstanding order to shoot anything and everything because cop is wetting her (or his) pants and “feels threatened”.

Hell, i feel threatened with the low caliber of cops running around with weapins they can’t wait to have an uneasy feeling to grab and fire at anything that moves. wish us regular citizens had sovereign immunity too.

Who would have though; a dog bred to fight dogs attacking another dog when off leash!

I have had experience with this, had a tenant that had a pit mix; great with people but always attacked my Springer until I made him get rid of it. It even found a way to get out of a muzzle.

Pits do get lock jaw when on a “kill”; but if you pick the beast up by the tail (STRAIGHT UP), it will let go. At that point I recommend swinging it into a brick wall....

Well of course they get lock jaw.

They can also fly and shoot lasers out of their eyes.

Amazing creature, the Norwegian Blue.

[wait...what?]

"but if you pick the beast up by the tail (STRAIGHT UP), it will let go."

There's one major flaw in your "how to break up a dog fight" theory, hoss.

The funny thing is the incidental “up” and “down” arrows.

I just noticed them.

If your Pit is prone to lock-jaw, you really should get him a tetanus shot.

:P

Two of my Jack Russel terrorist suffered from lock jaw when they locked their jaws onto each others heads. I could not pry them apart. I suspect that is what people are talking about.

There are people who actually believe that a Pit’s jaws have some kind of a ‘bio-mechanical’ feature that literally “locks” their jaws if they bite.
