Are Preppers responsible for the unprepared?
World Net Daily ^ | 12-8-12 | Patrice Lewis

Last week on the website Emergency Management, there appeared a blog post written by an emergency manager named Valerie Lucus-McEwen in which she made a grave error in judgment. She called doomsday preppers “socially selfish.”

She based this startling conclusion on the National Geographic’s “The Doomsday Prepper” series and concluded that because the people featured in this show were spending their OWN time and their OWN money to stockpile their OWN resources in order to prepare their OWN families for whatever disastrous scenario they foresaw, they are selfish. Specifically, as another emergency manager phrased it, this is “a level of indulgence that is selfish and counter-productive to providing for the common good.”

I, along with many in the prepping community, found this attitude disturbing to the point of creepy. It was exacerbated by the follow-up comments as she replied to reader questions. “It really doesn’t matter how much food you have or what you buy with your money,” she writes in a comment. “The tipping point is how you use it. … Is it something you are planning to hoard or are you working in your community to make sure everyone else is prepared also. I’m not sure how else to say it.”

And yet surprisingly there are even here on FR some who show up now and then on prepper threads that agree with her.

Sounds like the writer is kin to Hellary Clintoon. Remember the hildebeast's comment of "We will take things from you for providing for the common good"?

Yes. And it should be considered fair warning as to what can be expected from these people when there is a disaster.

I can't remember when I read it here on FR, but I recall someone commenting that the government confiscated his grandparents' stored goods (Texas) in WW2 on the grounds that they were "hoarders". I can't comment as to the validity of that statement.

If anyone here wants to see a genuine historic example of how much the government will do (expropriate etc) in a crisis, you should watch the BBC eight part mini series called "Wartime Farm". I thought I knew how autocratic the UK government was in WW2. I didn't, not by a long shot.

Suspecting something (the government will confiscate your prepper supplies and the general population will consider themselves entitled to YOUR stuff) is one thing ... having Ms. Lucus-McEwen actually say it to everyone’s face in such a bald-faced, public manner is quite another. I’m sure she’s kicking herself for exposing her liberal attitudes in a way that has preppers everywhere taking notice because ...... forewarned is forearmed.

Agreed. I’m responsible for my family, including a few beloved unprepared relatives. I CANNOT be responsible for the rest of the crowd.
And we’ve tried to help the community with Dave Ramsey get out of debt classes, Boy Scouts and American Heritage Girls. Get out of debt, live responsibly, learn basic survival skills. I have tried, and many refused. When the SHTF, my responsibility is to my children and immediate family.

I have a lot of the same Certifications and education as this woman. Even got myself a fancy Degree (associates in Applied Science, Emergency Management) and one thing I learned from those courses is that this type of person is the one who will need to be dealt with first if/when the SHTF.

She will quite happily order confiscation of your resources under her Emergency Powers or some other clap trap. And he or she will do it because your “selfish” and “unfair”. So let them play their little games right up until the wheels come off. Then do what needs to be done quickly, quietly, and without mercy or remorse.

Repeat as needed.

Lucus-McEwen and her ilk are too stupid to understand the reason why one does not feed the bears - because the bears become dependent on you for food, and it will eventually kill them for their lack of ability to fend for themselves.

And she is too selfish to apply the same lesson to people - because she derives a great deal of power from her post as maven of the grasshoppers.

If we each do our fair share and take out a few zombies, eventually there will be none left.

“In a freak accident, my entire earthquake and disaster survival kit was burned to a crisp when my lawnmower exploded in the garden shed. Then, two weeks later, amazingly, as I was duck hunting, my entire cache of guns and ammunition went down in a freak accident when my boat hit a snag and capsized.”

I’m sorry you lost everything as I was counting on you to help me since I’m an old lady who has nothing. :o)

Personally we have already told all of our friends and our family that they need to be stockpiling food, weapons and ammo. That is our only responsibility to them. Going one step further we are preparing to feed our immediate family of 7 if the need arises.

What you read in this article tells you everything you need to know about what will happen when the SHTF. The powers that be will attempt to collect your extra food stores to feed the community. You need to keep your prepping to yourself and be prepared to vigorously defend it from your neighborhood HOA or the local authorities.

I’ve been told it’s foolish to think you can repel ALL the zombies. That’s not what I’m after. I just want to punish as many as possible of the ones responsible for the coming collapse.

I would welcome the occasional zombie. When other supplies are gone, one can make zombie stew.

Mizzzzzzzzzzzz Lucus-McEwen is some kinda hypocrite: “Do as I say, except for you people out there doing as I say and then selfishly hoarding.”

“Oh but no, I couldn’t make it three days without rescue, myself.”

“Nor are my neighbors to either side blogging right next to me about the flatscreens I brought home for them when I got mine. After all, I think one should share from her bounty rather than hoarding. You shoulda seen it when I bought a new car for us all!”

But no, that last didn’t happen at all. Hypocrisy still reigns.

I have seen “The Shelter” numerous times but since you posted it, I watched it again.

Friends turned on each other within minutes since one had a shelter and the rest didn't. The friends fought each other, blows were even exchanged, because they all wanted in the shelter that wouldn't hold them all. And, they all blamed the doctor for not saving them, not letting them in the shelter.

That is how it will be in an extended emergency. Panic starts immediately when the emergency is known. The moral of this story is, if your neighbors know what you have, they will want it and take any means to get it. The doctor didn't have a gun so he couldn't protect his family and their water/food storage. The door to his shelter wasn't strong enough and the neighbors broke it down. In that story, you can bet the doctor got a reinforced door after that happened.

Will the neighbors, who all seem to have money, build a shelter in their home after this scare?

Somewhere in the last month, I read that 1% of our population are preppers. The other 99% will want what you have. For me, I have divorced the government, political parties and those who refuse to prep. Poor people can store water and food of some kind. I don't agree with anyone who says he/she can do absolutely nothing.

“Some are too poor to do much of anything, though.”

How? How can anyone be too poor in a nation that spends $4 trillion at the federal level alone and another $4 trillion again at the State and local levels?

Only in this nation does the “poor” live above most other nation’s middle classes and be called poor with running water, sanitation, sewer systems, food supermarkets, roadways, civil communities, education and jobs galore.

Only in America do the “poor” drive themselves in a vehicle to the welfare office.

Only in America are to “poor” dressed in $300 sneakers, watch big screen TVs, eat junk food from the supermarket, and play video games.

No one is poor in this nation as everyone is entitled to a free education and everyone has the opportunity to earn a living anyway they see fit.

Since the beginning of the last century we have had one violation of our rights after another concerning finance, yet, year after year people continue to vote for that crap and then they cry poormouth when it all falls apart as common sense said it would.

Sorry, but we simply do not have any poor in this nation, we have people that make bad decisions.

Even people that don’t pay attention have their Spidey senses tingling that something is up. People from all walks of life are preparing. I’ve met many. This pounding on preppers is nothing but class warfare, liberal style. They want to demonize preppers the same way they do the “rich” so that should the time come they can claim preppers owe everyone else what they have, just like they do the so-called rich today.
