Are Preppers responsible for the unprepared?
World Net Daily ^ | 12-8-12 | Patrice Lewis

Last week on the website Emergency Management, there appeared a blog post written by an emergency manager named Valerie Lucus-McEwen in which she made a grave error in judgment. She called doomsday preppers “socially selfish.”

She based this startling conclusion on the National Geographic’s “The Doomsday Prepper” series and concluded that because the people featured in this show were spending their OWN time and their OWN money to stockpile their OWN resources in order to prepare their OWN families for whatever disastrous scenario they foresaw, they are selfish. Specifically, as another emergency manager phrased it, this is “a level of indulgence that is selfish and counter-productive to providing for the common good.”

I, along with many in the prepping community, found this attitude disturbing to the point of creepy. It was exacerbated by the follow-up comments as she replied to reader questions. “It really doesn’t matter how much food you have or what you buy with your money,” she writes in a comment. “The tipping point is how you use it. … Is it something you are planning to hoard or are you working in your community to make sure everyone else is prepared also. I’m not sure how else to say it.”

“I suggest staying here. Running never solved a thing.”

It is a good thing that nine of the founding fathers did not have YOUR attitude.
“Running never solved a thing.” ?
I think you better rethink that statement when you are in a burning building, or in a society that is imploding.

Your the one who’s answer is for 150 million Americans to pick up and move. Tell me just how do you see that working?

I thought about it and I REPEAT:Running never solved anything.

And yet surprisingly there are even here on FR some who show up now and then on prepper threads that agree with her.

I find that surprising too. I hope it merely a combination of lonely trolls who say offensive things because it's the only way they get any attention at all and the scattered nutcases who are on FR but don't believe in true conservatism. I'm sure there are far fewer of those parasites here than on any liberal web site.

I never suggested that everyone leave.
Very few people have the determination and willpower to
run their own lives.
They will take their medicine, just as many in the old Soviet Union took theirs.
You run YOUR life as you see fit, and I will run mine as I see fit.
No one, especially you, has any right to criticize how, or where, I choose to live.

No one that abandons his country has the right to criticize someone that’s willing to stay here and fight for it.

Do us all a favor renounce your citizenship take a one for the Philippians and have a good life. Nothing is worse than a non-citizen or a quasi citizen trying to give advice to a true patriotic citizen.

Where have I criticized anyone?
I have given information to many FReepers on international living, and you have no right to criticize that.
What fighting are you doing to save the country from the Obots?

No, I am an American and have no intention of renouncing my citizenship.
By the way, I see that I have been a patriotic FReeper ten years longer then you.
Go mind your own business.

I find it interesting that none of the comments up to this one noted that the Mormons have been instructed by their Prophet for decades to maintain a supply of food and water to be self sufficient for one year. Many of them are so prepared.... and there are a lot of Mormons.

According to the above definitions, they would be “doomsday preppers”.

Hence the joke:
“I don’t need a food supply because I know a Mormon, and I have a gun.”
“What makes you think Mormons don’t have guns too?”

You believe what you want, but someone that has abandoned his country and calls themselves patriotic clearly hasn’t enough grasp of logic to discuss anything reasonably.

The same argument could be made that if she is saving any of her money for personal pleasure and not using it to help others, she is being selfish.

Or when she goes grocery shopping, if she only buys things for herself and her family, she's being selfish.

Sorry you’re having such a tough time.

I hope you are at least feeling well.

Good luck on the job hunt.

If it gets that bad, I won’t be digging holes to bury the fools who try to attack me. I have 5 labs and I can only save so much dog food. I’ll feed the fools to my dogs. They gotta eat too.

No need to state the obvious and commonly known.

Is it just me, or do ladies with hypenated names normally mean trouble from day one?

Never trust anything with three names, bleeds for five days and doesn't die.

With me, it was that terrible house fire. All the ammunition began to cook off, and the fire department had no choice but to let the whole thing burn. Total loss of all that stuff...

Is it just me, or does anyone else find the Doomsday Preppers TV show almost useless? I find it contrived and designed to make Preppers look like extremists, conspiracy theorists and freaks. There have been countless "preppers" featured who refuse to arm themselves because they don't believe in guns. Those who do have weapons often have no idea of how to handle them. There have been rich preppers who have spent fortunes on high tech surveillance and electrical countermeasures that would be useless in an EMP or Grid Down situation. There was an episode where a lady actually canned hamburger and chicken using boiling water bath rather than pressure canning. True preppers would view these folks as idiots.

Each prepper featured is portrayed as preparing for some specific event, i.e. financial collapse, solar flares, earthquake, super volcano, pandemic, famine, nuclear attack, pole shift, etc. and without fail the "experts" who rate them at the end disclaim the "event" they are preparing for as unlikely. I think the show is contrived to poke fun at the silly preppers. Last week a fellow had a meltdown when his "prepping partner" fired his riffle to set off an IED. The rifle report was so loud it made him sick. Good grief, guns go BANG - get over it or get a slingshot.

I don't find the people on the show so much selfish as I find them clueless. No self-respecting prepper I know would violate OpSec to go on TV with their prep strategies or follow a predetermined "reality show" script. I'm a prepper, work with preppers and participate in several "survival" forums, and I've yet to see a story featured on Doomsday Preppers that accurately portrays an average SHTF prepper. I think the show is a farce and watch it with a heavy dose of skepticism. Maybe I'm the conspiracy theorist, but all I've learned from Doomsday Preppers is what NOT to do!

I kinda have a thing for OpSec, so yeah, the folks on those shows make for a personal home theater version of MST3K. I actually enjoy watching.

Seriously - the dude ‘bout got sick over the report of his buddy’s gun? GTFO! I got a kick outta the one who shot himself - tho if you’re gonna have a ND, better to hit yourself than your son or the accompanying film crew. As I recall, the same guy’s looming prep threat was an EMP, yet his BOL was 30 miles into the desert, using his modern SUV.

“What not to do” - yeppers!

Said she got really ugly to the point of wanting his cell to holler at me and tried grabbing it out of his basket. People are getting scary these days.

That sounds like a good reason to administer a good thrashing, and I don't care if it is female. You are right, people are scary nowadays.
