How would a new US ban on assault rifles work?
DCDecoder ^

Posted on 12/18/2012 2:27:27 PM PST by RC one

How would a ban on semi-automatic assault rifles work? That could well be a big issue in Congress next year in the wake of the tragic Newtown, Conn., school shooting.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D) of California says she will introduce legislation banning assault weapons as a first order of business when the next Congress convenes. It will be based upon a similar bill that lawmakers passed in 1994, banning the rifles for 10 years.

“It will be carefully focused on the most dangerous guns that have killed so many people over the years....

Feinstein’s legislation names specific models of rifles it would prohibit. According to a version of the bill she introduced in 2005, these would include rifles known as AK-47s, AR-15s, and Uzis, among others.

In addition, the Feinstein bill probably would ban the ownership, transfer, or manufacture of any rifle that is capable of accepting a detachable magazine...

The legislation also would prohibit sale or ownership of any ammo-feeding device such as a magazine or belt capable of holding more than 10 rounds.

This sounds comprehensive, but it is important to note that the legislation contains one very large loophole. As Feinstein notes in her press release, anyone who currently has a legally owned assault rifle would be able to keep it. It would be legal to continue to resell these weapons. So America’s assault rifle arsenal would not get much smaller. It would just not get any larger.

I have written my representative already and told him how much I appreciated his past support for the second amendment and how much I appreciate his future support for the second amendment. Bob Latta of Ohio’s fifth district has an outstanding conservative record overall and is definitely a strong defender of the second amendment.

My long-standing advice remains: Decide where your “line in the sand” is, what you will do *when* it is crossed, and plan accordingly.

You going to enforce it Diane? You're pretty dumb for many reasons.

I don’t hear the wacko left liberals complaining about Putin building two new AK-47 Plants in Venezuela.

anyone who currently has a legally owned assault rifle would be able to keep it

And she's going to do what about those illegally kept by hussein's sons?

How does it work? It probably means they move the UN small arms treaty forward at light speed to obama's desk during the holidays when no one is in DC and no one is watching, side stepping the opposition.

That's the only way it happens. In a crazy world, with an increasing magnitude of crazy by the day, why would I want to disarm myself?

Why would I want a politician to disarm me??? Isn't that surrender?

Check the gun sales. People like guns, but that doesn't explain the records sales of the last few years.

If you make the world safer and more sane, people will disarm themselves.

Until we get to safe and sane again, good luck getting people to give up anything.

I’d hate to be an ATF agent if that were to happen. Lot’s of folks out there who really, really wouldn’t take too kindly to a visit from the ATF. Shoot, bury, cover, keep quite. “ATF agents, uh, let me think. Yeah, they were here, aksed me a few questions and then they left”

My guess is that when we go over the “fiscal cliff” all of this will be quickly forgotten as we hear heartbreaking stories of millions of lazy f**ks not getting their EBT cards replentished. Now, THAT my friends, will be a real tragedy.

Well, they’ll just have to turn those in - no two ways about it.

Don’t be silly.

1. What is statutory, functional definition of an assault rifle?
2. Is not “semi-automatic assault rifle” a contradiction in terminology?
3. Have we been told the style of firearm ACTUALLY used in the Newtown shooting?

At worst, they would ban all military style weapons and require you to turn them in. Or they might require you to go through the same kind of background check and pay a tax, like they already do for suppressors and full auto weapons now.

Probably make you keep them locked-up too.

And potentially SCARY tragedy.

When EBT cards are not reloaded, people will get angry and seek reparations in whatever form they can.

Out of the 12,000 people killed by firearms last year there were only 300 by use of a long gun or rifle .

and of those rifles, how many were actually AR15 style assault rifles? maybe one or two? Maybe none? I only heard about one assault rifle wielding maniac in 2011 and that was in Norway.

75% of those murders were committed with cheap handguns, knives, blunt objects, and hand and feet by black or Mexican gang banger types who couldn't pass a background check to legally buy a firearm.

Yet the democrats feel a need to take away from middle class white guys the weapon used almost never to commit murder? It has never been more obvious to me that we do have a need for assault rifles in this country.

Since Obama has all the money in the world to spend he will pen into law illegally of course but then nobody opposes him that a very hefty reward shall be given for any defined assault rifle and even bigger rewards to those who turn in holdouts.
Lets say he offers $5,000 for any AR15 rifle, just how many people are going to pass that up for patriotism? especially when they are out of work, its not ridiculous, its idiotic for any conservative to NOT think they won’t use our own taxes against us.

Any bribery from Obamacare waivers to outrageous buy back prices. make the people, the weak willed ones turn in the ones they know who are armed. Obama is illogical and unpredictable but in a predictable fashion. He will use the entitlement crowds as his private snitch army.
