Couple Accused Of Slapping Elderly Best Buy Employee
cbs local ^

Posted on 12/22/2012 5:17:32 PM PST by traumer

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS (KMOX) - An East St. Louis couple is charged with beating an elderly employee at a Metro East Best Buy.

It’s considered normal procedure by most to be asked for your receipt while leaving a busy store like Best Buy with expensive items. But Latoya Greenwood, 38, didn’t take kindly to the request.

Police say she began shouting obscenities at the 61-year-old Fairview Heights Best Buy employee at the exit door. Her husband got into the act and smacked the man across the face, sending him down to the ground while his wife didn’t flinch and kept the curse words flying.

The husband, 39-year-old Hickey Thompson, is charged with felony aggravated battery and is held on $20,000 bond. Greenwood is charged with disorderly conduct.

As for the 61-year-old victim, he was treated at the store and declined to go to the hospital.

This couple did not realize you have to get your Obama phone thru
the government, not just walk out with it at Best Buy.

As a contractor, I hate and stay away from east St Louis, Now I have 3 jobs over there from a good general, WTF people get killed over there for no reason daily, and it makes less news than Chicago. Now they are highlighting a beating and it makes national news.

The media is so sad and pathetic!

Former Althoff football star charged with battery of Best Buy employee

A former metro-east football star was charged with aggravated battery, a class 3 felony, Thursday by the St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office following an incident at Best Buy in Fairview Heights. According to police, Hickey D. Thompson, who earned a mention in Sports Illustrated as the star of Althoff Catholic High School's football teams that won back-to-back state championships in 1989 and 1990, allegedly hit a Best Buy employee in the face during an altercation at about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday. The employee was identified in court records as Gary Thompson.

Hickey Thompson's companion, Latoya N. Greenwood, an East St. Louis councilwoman, was issued a ticket for disorderly conduct, a class C misdemeanor. Greenwood works at East St. Louis School District 189.

And the withc probably gave the “don’t you know who I am” line.
I have heard the line used in sarcasm. The first time I heard it used in earnest was in liberal Minnesota. First by a city councilbitch when she hit my car in the rear at a red light, and multiple times by a VP of a major control systems manufacturer. Both were libs.

What they bdid was wrong... no doubt they should serve jail time....

But best Buy is also wrong....

They treat you like a criminal when you leave their store demanding to inspect your bag and receipt.

My wife hates going with me to Best Buy to shop, I always refuse to let them look in my bag. Once I pay for the merchandise and their employee places it in a bag, it’s my personal property. They have no rights...

I always tell the guy at the door if he shows me his drivers license and pays me $10 dollars he can peek...

Otherwise, NO.....

It’s three steps from the register to the front door under close scrutiny....

Please tell me what law or right they have, and be specific....

It’s a private establishment, you’re leaving with merchandise from the establishment and they have every right to check for a purchase receipt. In some states they’d be within the law to detain you for refusing, but they’d have to release you with a set amount of time deemed “reasonable.” An hour or two at most.

Here's another story with more info: Belleville Man Charged With Battery:

Hickey Thompson's companion, Latoya N. Greenwood, an East St. Louis councilwoman, was issued a ticket for disorderly conduct, a class C misdemeanor. Greenwood works at East St. Louis School District 189.

They bought something somewhere else in the store, so he had to check their receipt.

this society keeps trying to change the meaning of words....I mean the REAL meaning....

elderly to me would be some frail, stooped over quite older person....if 61 is "elderly" than 81 must be super sonic elderly, or something....

like "gay" used to mean happy...

like "handicapped" and "disabled" used to mean somebody in a wheelchair....

and "poor" used to mean really poor, no food, clothes, etc....

nowadays "poor" people have lap tops, huge tv's,the newest phones, and fancy clothes.....but they still call them "poor"....

Its a pretty common scam among many. My sister works at Walmart and says the most common one is to go into the store with empty bags and try to walk out the front like they bought the stuff. Another is to buy something then come back the next day with the receipt from the day before and walk out with another of the same item.

Pretty much all the stores around here do the same. Where they have self check outs they have someone look at those too.

Down here it’s corrupt checkout clerks colluding to ring up a sale for far less than the value of the purchase. They’re checking to see if the receipt is reflective of the merchandise in the bag or bags. It’s a particular problem with seasonal temp hires around Christmas.

Another scam is the cashier and customer working together to intentionally underring an item. 50” TV? Scan the UPC of a smaller TV (or even something else entirely). Or else just “miss” scanning a few of the more expensive items and shove them into the bag. The exit check is as much to make sure the employees aren’t helping in theft as it is for customers just stealing on their own.

All three of you are correct it is private property...

However, you are incorrect on the law.....also, on basic liberty...

Once you purchase the merchandise at the register it is your personal property, no longer the stores.

If you wanted to break it into pieces at the register after you paid for it and place it in the trash it is your right.

The store (regardless of it’s internal policy) has no right to inspect any personal property without cause. Cause is defined by direct observation of theft. Period....

They have no right to look into your bag any more then they have to ask you to open your wallet or take off your watch or drop your drawers....That right was given up by them when you legally purchased the merchandise.

They have no right to detain without cause, and they better be right.....

You know I’m right because the only defense you mustered is calling me names....

I don’t berate the employees, I joke with them but they also understand I won’t bend. Every time, the say no problem and have a nice day.

They get it, they no their limitations and the law. They also know your rights and theirs....

Isn’t it about time you learned yours?

This is nothing less than Costco or Wal-Mart requires. Heck, Costco wants to see your membership card BEFORE you enter the store.

I don’t have a problem letting people see my receipt and look through my merchandise. It’s a way to keep down shoplifting and keeps prices in check. It isn't the store's fault. It's our society that's to blame.
