The increasing abundance of roe deer appears to be having an impact on woodlands, a study has suggested.

Researchers found that sites with the highest abundance of the native animals had the lowest shrub layer vegetation cover and a lower number of birds.

It is described as the first study of its kind in the UK to examine the possible impact of just one species of deer on the natural environment.

Details were presented at the British Ecological Society's annual meeting....

Hunting is given only scant mention in the article. I gather that it's much more difficult to hunt deer in Britain than it is here in the U.S.

For those of you who haven’t seen a Roe deer, these deer are about the size of a doberman pincer when full grown....small deer.

We saw a few when traveling around Wiltshire this summer.

Hunting was my immediate thought for a solution.

Astonishing! I wonder what that study cost.

In other news, the free buffet at the Las Vegas Sumo Wrestling Convention had more food consumed than did the buffet at the Anorexics' Convention.

“Hunting was my immediate thought for a solution.”
Hunting!!!!! This is England. They’ll create a “Ministry of Roe Deer” hire hundreds of Administrators, Bureaucrats, PR people, “Scientists” to study the problem further for the next 10 years. Then announce that the Government should increase taxes.

They need more men in tights merrily running around with bows and arrows. They’re still legal right? (the bows and arrows, not the tights — I know they’re still legal in GB.)

Check out this .pdf from the PA Game Commission

It's obvious which side of the fence the deer are browsing.

Before we beat up too much on Old Blighty, do note we have the same problem here with White tails. Hunting isn't allowed in a lot of locations in the USA that would have a good effect on the deer here.

Since anyone owning a hunting weapon is a potential danger to the regime there...oh, wait; that's HERE!

In our suburban Jersey Shore county there are more deer than there were in 1776. Back then if one strayed into your yard to munch on your petunias, or if your larder was low on meat they were fair game. Now the only major predator they face is the automobile.

But it is ILLEGAL to kill “The King’s Deer”! That is what got Robin Hood into trouble.
