Surge in local gun sales mirrors national trend

Gun sales locally and across the nation rocked upward December, apparently in response to mass shootings and fears that they will trigger tougher gun control laws.

Local gun shops have been unable to keep up with the demand. Jerrod Leigh, manager at Four Corners General Store in Castle Rock, says he won’t even take a back order list.

“The list would be so large, we’d never get to all of them. ... It’d be more of a book than a list,” Leigh said Friday. “We still have stuff coming in, but the demand is higher than the supply.”

Gun sales have risen sharply across the nation since about 2007, the year before President Barack Obama was elected. FBI criminal background checks — necessary when someone purchases a gun from a licensed dealer — increased 88 percent nationally and 143 percent in Washington over the past five years.

Statewide, firearms background checks increased 69 percent in last month, rising from about 44,000 in December 2011 to nearly 75,000 last month. By comparison, background checks were up 32 percent for the year. Nationally, the number of background checks conducted in December rose 50 percent compared to the previous December, though the number increased only 19 percent overall for 2012.

Statistics for Washington are particularly compelling because they include background checks only for “long guns” — such as semiautomatic rifles — and do not include background checks for handgun purchasers, which are handled at a local level. Most other states use the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System — NICS — to screen purchasers of all types of legal firearms, including handguns.

Do you know what all those gun buyers have in common? Everyone of them is old enough to vote. You know what else they have in common? Everyone of them opposes gun control and they have spent millions and millions of dollars to make that point crystal clear. These people are angry. These folks are outraged. You can channel that rage and use it or you can be destroyed by it. I hope Republicans are paying close attention because this is a game changer.

Today’s GOP is way too lackadaisical for their, or America’s, good. It knows how to get passive approval in media polls, but not how to turn out warm bodies on election day.

I think they just need to be mad as hell and I think they are now. How our representatives respond to that rage remains to be seen. They need to walk a fine line here and I suspect they know that. For our part, we need to let them know that the people that vote for them are extremely concerned about all this extremist gun control talk. They need to know that they get reelected by complying with our will and they get primaried by going against us. They know that we have primaried plenty of RINOs very recently and they know we’re crazy enough to do it again in the mid terms. carrot and stick.

Gun sales locally and across the nation rocked upward December, apparently in response to 0bama demagoguing mass shootings to promote his gun control agenda less than two hours after it happened and fears the certainty that they will trigger he and the Dems will try to pass tougher gun control laws.

Sent a letter to my newly elected Dem congress woman - tentatively nicknamed “The Cat Lady.” I explained that at the time of the last AWB there were about 1.5 million “assault weapons” in private hands but that now there are tens of millions of “assault weapons” in the hands of law abiding Americans who vote. That any attempt to make their lives miserable with a bunch of useless, unenforceable, laws could backfire. Right now we are spending all our disposable income on weapons, magazines and ammo but if those were not available to us we might well redirect our funds to campaign contributions for candidates who promised to restore our freedoms.

Strong work. I am blessed with Ohio Republican, Bob Latta as my representative. I sent him a polite letter thanking him for all of his past support for the second amendment and letting him know that, amid all these calls for gun control, I will appreciate his future support as well. Incidentally, in my district, the second amendment remains a very important issue to Republican voters and my district is just right next door to John Boehner’s district and I don’t think a few miles of corn and bean fields makes for that much of a difference in attitudes on this subject. Just sayin’.

My district, AZ1, lies partially along the I10 smuggling corridor between Nogales, Sonora and Los Angeles, CA. The Federal Government arms the drug gangs here. Believe me, we also take the second amendment seriously.

The Sobbing Speaker concerns me. He's been in DC too long and cares way too much what they say about him in the national press. He does a better job of representing the interests of the Federal Government than he does representing the interests of his constituents. (We have a Senator like that here too. Used to be in the Navy.) Let's keep up the pressure and hope this time Mr. B. shows some backbone.

.22LR ammo has about become extinct over the last 6 weeks.
