Delta offers new service for musicians: complimentary guitar crushing

Dave Schneider's vintage Gibson guitar was worth close to $10,000. Thanks to Delta, it's now worth considerably less. Schneider, lead singer of the hockey-themed band The Zambonis, begged airline staffers to let him carry his 1965 Gibson ES-335 onto the plane, even offering to buy a separate seat for the guitar. Delta refused, forcing him to check it. When he reached his destination, he heard a "crazy sound [of] metal on metal," and you know this story is going to end poorly, right? That was the sound of his guitar being crushed in a service elevator, sustaining almost $2,000 in damage. Delta said it "will be reaching out to the customer directly to discuss how we can make this right."

I’m sorry a piece of history was lost.

Educate me a bit if you do not mind?

$10,000 guitar, sustains $2,000 worth of damage and is "lost"?

By that I assume you mean the 'repair' would be cosmetic and the sound quality is gone forever?

If that is correct, then $2,000 is not adequate compensation and I see this heading to court.

As soon as a repair of any type id done, value goes down. And the bigger the repair, the bigger the hit.

There are few of those models out there. Not like MEGA rare, but they arent like a Strat or Les Paul with high production runs.

Think of it like an original 57 Chevy vs. a garage restored hot rod.

Both have value. One has a lot more. But the original is still an original. As for sound, it really depends on the damage. Maybe none, maybe significant. No way to tell for certain unless you had major cracks or breaks. Then it will assuredly have an effect.

Delta must have learned customer service from USAirways, otherwise known as Useless Air. For years Useless had a virtual monopoly on flights to/from my hometown. And as a monopoly, the airline treated their passengers as subuman. Once competition came along some years ago, I quit flying Useless Air. I’ll hitchhike before I fly anywhere with Useless Air.

When I have to ship one or two of my big camera lenses, I will ship them ahead of time in a padded, sealed, and locked Pelican case. They arrive at the right place and time, in one piece, and without being touched by some wanna-be photographer working for the TSA.

Yeah, it takes a little more effort. But lenses cost more than this dude’s guitar. And getting them fixed costs more.

Thanks for the added insight. I can fully relate to the car scenario, as I had a car ‘destroyed’, through no fault of my own (rear ended while stopped at a light). It could have been fixed, but it would not have been the same.
