Shutterstock.com For once its the IRS and not taxpayers doing the procrastinating. The agency postponed the start of tax-filing season to Jan. 30, officials said Tuesday, a delay that will push back refunds issued to early filers by more than a week.
The 8-day delay was necessary to give tax officials more time to update forms and test processing systems following the last-minute changes Congress rolled out to avert the fiscal cliff, the IRS said Tuesday. Alas, the April 15th filing deadline will not be pushed back as well.

Does this mean I can wait until April 22nd to file?
Wish on Perdogg, wish on. ;-)

Honestly I would not be surprised.
Have they hired all the new agents to enforce obamacare?
An extra week’s worth of interest. The ironic part is that the ones most affected will be those who get the EIC.
This doesn’t make sense. The tax law they passed on January 1 didn’t apply to 2012, it applied to 2013.
I guess they must have done something that also applied to 2012, that didn’t get clearly communicated.
Tax returns received later than April 15th will be subject to a 10% penalty.... per day.
(Heyyyyy, every little bit helps with the deficit!)
BTW, there is a possibility that Congress will pass the Simplified Tax Code before April 15th. If they do, expect your Tax Forms shortly thereafter. In light of the potentially short time to complete your tax return, a sample is printed below for your practice.

So you think now.
The taxes they just raised, perhaps? (wow. that would suuuuuck.)
One of the issues I recall reading about last year were all the fraudulent refunds that were auto-issued by IRS in early January based simply on someone’s filed return, many with the same residence address. Never understood why they don’t have to wait until early February after copies of the W-2’s and 1099’s are all received and in the system, then check SS#’s, names and addresses shown on returns requesting a refund again that information.
Of course, totally eliminating federal taxes and replacing them with a consumption task would eliminate the need for all of this.
Yes, that is exactly it. The AMT patch was part of the fiscal BS bill. The AMT, when originally passed, set the application threshold in the area of $37k. It has never been adjusted for inflation or increasing wages - they just pass a patch each year to push up the point where it kicks in. Absent this patch, nearly all of us would have fallen in the AMT trap this year.
Just another reason that demonstrates how convoluted and complete BS our tax code is.
Yes, but they are waiting on their guns to arrive.
For those of us who will confront them.
FTIRS!
FUBO!
True
I saw some suspicious folks at the gun show. They drove ford sedans, wore dark suits, and sunglasses.
I reported them to Janet Incompetano, but no one got back to me.
