Apparently he changed his mind. This wouldn’t have happened if he’d been on an island.

This isn’t the first time. When I was at MCRD SD in Jan of 1970 we boosted our first phase fatbody over the fence that bordered the main runways; for his good as well as ours. He was picked up by a cabbie who instead of taking him to a hotel, took him right back into the depot. At least he was out of our hair (as if we had any).

What is calling you to the actual runway to make you want to go out there? The song of the Sirens.

I sometimes wonder, looking back, which was the better way to go through bootcamp, SD or PI. Strangely enough, never recall discussing that with guys who went through PI.
Seeing all the homes up on the hill in the sunset as we used the wash racks, watching the airliners take people to who knows where..... Essentially seeing the world happen just beyond your reach. The isolation of PI may have been a better way to get through without the longing to be out there..........

Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego
This wouldn't have happened had he been at the real Marine Corps Recruit Depot - Parris Island.

First page, circa 1968, (paraphrased) of the Recruit’s little red notebook.
“Parris Island is in fact an island. It is surrounded by miles of treacherous swamps. The swamps contain quicksand, sinkholes, poisonous snakes and alligators. Past the swamps are the ocean and inland waterway channels. These have very strong tides which can easily sweep away even excellent swimmers. Moreover, sharks, barracuda and other dangerous marine creatures inhabit these waters.”

You could always tell a PI Marine on the west coast, their asses would drop dead on a hump in Pendleton’s back waters..Couldn’t handle the steep grades eh??

Everybody cant be a marine.
I've yet to read of any difference between Army basic training and Marine Corps basic training..........
Perhaps in AIT but not in basic.........

You're pretty close. I was 1st Battalion, PI, and if we got a smoking circle in the evening, we could see headlights of vehicles off in the distance crossing the causeway back to the mainland.
Can't tell you how many times I said I wish I was in that car/bus/cab/deuce-and-a-half/six by ... whatever ... just get me the hell off this island!
Other than that, there was no evidence of life outside PI. None.

Oh yeah? I humped Sheep $hit Mountain boo-koo times carrying full pack/rifle along with the base plate AND tube for a four deuce mortar.
Just to make it interesting the CO (who had a swagger stick) had me hump the ammo too, plus the vat cans for noon chow ... while pulling a water-buffalo with a rope tied around my waist. :)

I had a fellow recruit go UA on my Firewatch on Parris Island. I had to wake up the Senior Drill Instructor, and tell him what happened.
They found the guy and had him back in about 20 minutes.
