SALEM, OR (KPTV) - A 6-year-old girl is recovering after she was attacked by a pack of Chihuahuas in Salem.
The attack happened Wednesday night on 17th Street Northeast near Nebraska Street, according to Salem police.
The girl was taken to the hospital but is expected to be OK.
Four of the Chihuahuas are now at the Marion County Animal Shelter under a 10-day quarantine. Once that is finished, a veterinarian will evaluate each dog for either adoption or euthanasia.
William Van Aken, the victim's father, said he and his daughter were on a walk to her school.
"We were only two blocks from the school when the five dogs just ran up barking and they ran straight after her and I thought they were just going to come up to us and back off, but the biggest one jumped up and bit her in the shoulder," he said.
A school crossing guard who was nearby chased the dogs away.
Neighbors said the Chihuahuas would routinely get loose from their yard and roam the streets.
"They actually tried to come at me and bite me but I was with my dog and he started barking at them," said neighbor Ryan Cade.
Since no one could say which dog out of the pack actually bit the girl, all but the quietest one were confiscated.
"It was bound to happen," said neighbor Barbara Gault. "We've seen them chasing after people all the time."
The dogs' owner told FOX 12 that children in the neighborhood often let the dogs out. He also said he understood it was time to give them up.

Sure. Like any dog, they get yappy and mean if you just keep them out in a pen all the time, like he did here. Let them sleep in the warm house and give them a scratch on the tummy and they’re fine.
My mother has one. It is cute. Loving. Not a yipping stereotype at all... And regularly drags in all sorts of desert wildlife/birds that it killed. some as large as itself.

Ban wimpy pansy males (two of them in the article) who can’t drop kick a little chihuahua. Hope mama took her cast iron skillet to daddy for letting the daughter get bit.

I have a people lovebug. He will roll over in anyones arms, snuggle, etc. But he thinks he can dominate any dog and tries to chew ears.
An AR15 would work just as well.
They should test those dogs for rabies.
He doesn’t look like an especially small guy, nor does the girl look particularly big. Why in hell wouldn’t he just pick her up?
I've never met one. Vicious little things. Too bad for pit bulls chihuahuas aren't 90-lb dogs because then everyone's attention would rightly be focused on chihuahuas and not pit bulls.
I've never met a pit bull or a german shepherd or a doberman pinscher or even a rottie that didn't warm up to me in a matter of minutes, a few hours at the most. OTOH, I've never met a chihuahua that warmed up to me even after I spent all day trying to befriend them. Vicious little critters, which I attribute to their naturally fearful nature (but I suppose I'd be fearful around big lumbering beasts too, if I only weighed ounces).

I have 3 chihuahuas. Bobble loves kids, he let’s 3 year olds just love all over him and on Halloween, he is at the door, greeting all the trick or treaters with licks. Dru and Darla are little snugglers. They just want a lap and the occasional table scrap.
Chihuahuas are the most ill-tempered dogs I have ever seen. All chihuahuas should be exterminated.

Yeah, my little guy loves people and let our ferrets climb all over him, but if another dog gets in his space, he is 12 pounds of furry fury. He punked out a full grown Golden and also an adult Weimaraner.
I much prefer big dogs over the small yappy ones. I’ve been chased by the small ones, but, like you, I’ve never had a problem with the big breeds.
Hmmm Chihuahuas must be like Chickens.
My Grandpappy warned me, "Boy don't turn your back on chickens, they'll kill you if they get their chance..."
