Hippies were Satan worshipers, according to history book

Hippies were rude, dirty, Satan worshipers, according to a paragraph that apparently appears in a Louisiana state-funded school’s history book.

The book, entitled “America: Land I love” is an eighth-grade history textbook that Mother Jones reports is used in at least one Louisiana voucher school. The textbook is published through Pensacola, Fla.-based A Beka Book.

According to an image obtained at AmericaBlog.com, the passage on hippies paints a stark, unflattering image: “They went to Canada or European countries to escape being drafted into military services. Many young people turned to drugs and immoral lifestyles; these youth became known as hippies. They went without bathing, wore dirty, ragged, unconventional clothing, and deliberately broke all codes of politeness or manners. Rock music played an important part in the hippie movement and had great influence over the hippies. Many of the rock musicians they followed belonged to Eastern religious cults or practiced Satan worship.”

“I don’t see a problem here”

Hippies I knew didn’t worship satan. And this is designed for Jr Highschoolers. I don’t like garbage propaganda whether it comes from the left or the right or ... in this case ... Mars. “Dinosaurs walked alongside men” .. Yeah right.

And what did the repugs do? Criminalize their every move, and steal their lives.

All they needed was to be shown Gods love for them, not fear, hate, and criminality.

I don’t know if you can ever generalize like this. I don’t think most rock musicians from the Hippie era worshiped Eastern religions or Satan. Sure, some dabbled in it as something new but hardly any were serious about it. And keep in mind that one of the Hippie Heroes — Dennis Hopper — was Republican.

Not good at doing what’s expected and really poor at doing what I’m told.
Sort of march to my own drum. And do not play well with others.

I don’t think that makes you a hippie — a freeper maybe.

It wasn’t a “blanket” accusation, and it is accurate.

I’m not sure those rock musicians really worshiped Satan. They might have pretended to on stage in order to project some kind of pathetic ‘bad boy’ image to try and look all cool and rebellious, but I doubt they actually did.

These people are/were pathetic, and deserve to be seen as such. Actually suggesting that they really did worship Satan as his dedicated acolytes is giving them a mystique that they don’t really warrant IMHO...

>> “What about the hippies that were Christians?” <<

.
Never ran into one that was really Christian. Lots of satanic symbology abounded in ‘67-’68.

<I’m more offended by the blanket accusations against Rock musicians.

Hee hee. : ) I was a hippie. I wore unconventional clothes - if the only standard of clothing was the 1950’s. Styles change; I actually wore very typical clothing for the time. I bathed. I listened to rock and roll. Yeah, I smoked dope, but it didn’t stop me from getting a degree (several of them) and becoming a productive member of society. While I was a socialist at one point, I’m a good conservative now, and raised a conservative child. People change.

When you make broad brush statements like this - especially when they can be refuted by people who actually lived through the time period - people are less likely to believe you are every telling the truth.

And slander rock and roll?! What are these people thinking? : )

Get a grip, there was nothing hyperbolic about the statement.

Not what the headline says

The word was “many,” not most, and the statement was quite accurate.

First off, real hippies were less than five percent of the under thirties in the sixties. Maybe about one or two percent. Large mags tried to make out like every kid back then was a hippie. I grew up in those times, and I didn’t know one hippie. And no, I didn’t live in Nome, Alaska. The reality was quite different. And I seriously doubt one percent of hippies were into Satanism. Hippies loved drugs, sex, and music not necessarily in that order.
