Russian President Vladimir Putin has enlisted Hollywood action man Steven Seagal to help him promote a return to Soviet-era fitness.

The unlikely pair opened a new martial arts center outside Moscow on Wednesday, reports Reuters, to kick off Putin’s attempt to bring back a mass physical training program first introduced in the 1930s under Joseph Stalin.

The revival of the GTO system (an acronym in Russian which translates as “Ready for Work and Defense”) could bring major benefits to the country, said Putin, according to a transcript published on the Kremlin’s official website:

...

“Putin and Seagal have long been friends, and they regularly meet each other,” Putin’s spokesman told reporters, according to the ITAR-TASS news agency.

Anyone seen the ads for Seagal's new TV show? He's twice the man he used to be.

Why do I fear the nationalism in Russia? Seriously, they are taking from our 1980’s playbook and it just might work.

Putin should have teamed up with Fedor instead. Do Russians even know who Steven Seagal is?

Uh, Steve's looking fairly hefty these days. Maybe a little too much moo shu pork...

I'm surprised at him and Putin. I thought Seagal was a pro-American type.

Yes, he definitely looks like a fit individual. He's so fit that just playing the guitar is a workout.

He is such an egomanical POS that he destroys every movie he was ever in.

Personally I cannot watch his movies.

I always liked Segal’s early movies. Before he turned into the Michelin man.

A few years ago I grabbed a Steven Seagal movie and brought it home. In the first 10 minutes of the movie a fat Seagal dressed as a cop cussed unnecessarily at his young fit cop partner and then cussed unnecessarily at his 19 year old super model girlfriend.

We laughed out loud at how pathetic it was and turned the movie off. After a minute of reading, we discovered Seagal had written the part for himself which explained a lot.

The man's ego has no bounds, and he has no concept of growing old gracefully. Suuuuuure Steven, you are the doughy lead cop of a swat team and aaaall the super models (young enough to be your grandkid) can't get enough of ya! Haha! :p

He's no Bruce Willis!

A fitting image for how certain circles view current America. Fairly accurate, too, from that point of view.
