Lenovo ships new enterprise gear with Windows 7

Conservative business users ditch Windows 8

Lenovo is continuing to ship Windows 7 on the majority of its enterprise shipments. Although Windows 8 has been out for months, the OS of choice for enterprises remains Win 7.

Windows 8 is still shipped with the machines, in the form of a bundled disc. The Register reports Lenovo learned the trick after it got burned with Windows Vista downgrades, so this time around it is preinstalling a downgraded OS by default.

Lenovo is still interested in Windows 8 touchscreen devices, such as its ThinkPad Helix convertible. However, the Helix is rather pricey and fancy hybrids won’t make up the bulk of Lenovo ThinkPad shipments anytime soon.

Win 8 is a great system...on touch technology platforms. It is not, however, very good for platforms absent that technology.

They made the same mistake here that they did with Vista, they released an OS made for hardware that is not in wide use at the moment.

I did not have any issues with Vista but I was running them on machines that were up to speed for the OS.

Right now I have Win 8 on one compatible platform; no real issues.

The bottom line is don’t upgrade just because there is a new OS. Understand the issues before committing.

Win 8 may be great for kiosks and phones .
Most businesses and home users still use keyboards and mice.
Many corporations are still XP because it works .

I bought a new machine with Win 8 preloaded (Lenovo Twist) and found the biggest problem is that Win 8 needs exceptional power behind it or it crashes regularly. My machine has an i5 processor and 4 GB RAM, and I have to reboot 5 times a day because something stops working ... and on Win 8, it is weird because when something stops (like hyperlinks) working, there are NO error messages ... it just sits there letting me click away but doing nothing. Win 8 is the new Vista, but that may be too mean to Vista. Win 8 is the new Win ME.

Using Window systems reminds me of the good doctors who never jump onto new products and are never the last to use a product after it has been used by others.

My new computer is headed into its first year in a couple of months with Windows 7. I could have had Windows 8 when I bought the computer, but having survived other Window new launches, I said no.

There have been some problems with my W7, but most seem to be due to the internet providers pushing too much bs on their log in screens with long running Java Scripts.

My latest Windows update and the newest internet connections for now seem to have by passed Java scripts forced on us by the various internet providers.

True for the moment, but many also now use tablets with touch tech in many formats. Desktop pcs with touch tech have been around for a while and it won’t be that long before the price drops and touch tech along with mouse and keyboard become the norm. The current touch desktops still use a KB and mouse.

Many corporations are still XP because it works .

Actually, most corporations have moved to Win7 unless they stopped renewing their EA or support agreements with Microsoft.

XP is no longer provided, supported, or licensed by Microsoft. If you run a corporation on XP workstations and are using newer technologies such as Server 2008/2012, you're going to have a lot of program problems, esp. with 64-bit platforms.

Win8 isn't universally accepted, and there's a lot of doubt in the tech community that it ever will. Touch platforms are not universally accessible or sensible for business.

Most of the equipment I deal with that has Windows runs on a WinXp platform, and slowly migrating to Win7.

I’ve run into one customer with Win8. I absolutely hate it. Nothing is intuitive or patently obvious aside from using the internet. Trying to make any changes or install software on it is a nightmare compared to all previous versions of Windows.

The multi-national where I work is XP.

Maybe they have extended licensing because of EU rules.

I remember P&G finally switched to Win 95 two years after its introduction.

I thought Microsoft agreed to extend support for XP until sometime in 2014?

Per MS website: support ends April 8,2014.

Personally I will likely have XP on offline systems dedicated for control purposes for years to come as some software is not available in updated versions. This is likely to be true for other niche users choosing or forced by economics to retain older but functional equipment.

At work one application still runs on NT,and continues to do what it did when new.The 5-figure price of a replacement program to do the same job on newer OS is not in the budget.

They extended consumer support, sure. They understand there’s a larger acceptance of XP over the newer techs, esp. on older hardware.

From an enterprise agreement perspective and licensing in the enterprise, Microsoft won’t offer licensing for true-ups or support on XP anymore.

I have no beef with changing to Win7 except for the hassle of finding drivers for some XP-era hardware that is installed, working, and fills the need.

At my work, they had a lot of problems with Vista. Not sure if it was the hardware we were running it on or IT didn’t know how to deal with the quirks or something else. Vista wound up being alright but it took a few months for it be OK.

I chose XP for my new home computer during the conversion. Then I got Win 7 for a later new computer. I like Win 7 and I’m hearing that 8 sucks but I’ve never used it.

Win 8 is like Vista, released for technology (touch screen) that is not widely used yet. XP was great, Win 7 is very good, even Vista was a good OS overall after the hardware caught up with the software.

I agree. I liked Vista after some of the growing pains got worked out. I’m running a laptop with Win 7 and it runs really decent. I have no desire to go to 8.
