Is global warming causing harsher winters?

Millions of people in northern Europe are still battling snow and ice, wondering why they are being punished with bitter cold when - officially - spring has arrived and Earth is in the grip of global warming.

Yet some scientists, eyeing the fourth year in a row of exceptionally harsh late-winter weather in parts of Europe and North America, suggest warming is precisely the problem.

In a complex tango between ocean and atmosphere, warming is causing icy polar air to be displaced southwards, they contend.

“The linkage is becoming clearer and clearer, I think, although the science has not yet been settled,” said Dim Coumou of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) near Berlin.

Yeah... tell me about it.

These people don't have a clue as to what's going on. As the old saying goes, "If you don't believe in anything, you'll believe everything."

(PhysOrg.com) — Sunspot formation is triggered by a magnetic field, which scientists say is steadily declining. They predict that by 2016 there may be no remaining sunspots, and the sun may stay spotless for several decades. The last time the sunspots disappeared altogether was in the 17th and 18th century, and coincided with a lengthy cool period on the planet known as the Little Ice Age.

The equation:

Global warming equals government control over natural resources and transportation, control over us.

Solar CYCLE!!!!

And with the cycle 24 peak being the lowest it's been since the Dalton Minimum,

do not be surprised if the next two winters are similarly long-lasting and cold, with negative effects on crop yields and thus food prices.

AGW is an unfalsifiable hypothesis where all things are possible. It requires multiple universes and a deeply held religious belief in AGW because it sure the hell ain’t science.

The solar maximum has not happened.

Look at the graph in post #10. The solar max was modeled to be peaking in early 2013, but it increasingly looks like it peaked in early 2012, and we are on the down slope.

No, it isn’t. We didn’t get a single ice day in Fort Worth this year.

That has to be the explanation! It’s the coldest March on record here in Virginia, and it’s because the earth is getting warmer! Makes PERFECT sense! /s

Yes, global warming causes more severe winters. And if we spend more money, we'll balance the budget.

That illustrates their insanity fairly well. Imagine if you will, a civilization that has decided they are catastrophically warming their planet by some of their activities. They decide they must drastically halt those activities. One problem. Observations have shown that the planet has not warmed in the past 15 years. And this winter appears to be one for the record books.

No problem, the civilization determines that the cooling or lack of warming is actually being cause by the warming. So they continue to drastically change their activities. But the world seems to not be warming anymore at all. In fact it appears to be getting very cold.

No problem, the civilization determines that the drastic cooling is just a sign of the drastic warming. They continue to change their activities. Now almost all of their economic output has been destroyed. But the cold continues. The past year saw no summer. Winter lasts until the end of April.

Soon the civilization will be dead simply because it could not admit it had made a drastic mistake.

And in other words, soon the government will collapse simply because it could not admit it had made a drastic mistake by spending too much money.

And are you also aware that the Arctic is currently melting even if you, personally, are cold?

The Arctic alternates between above and below normal all the time:

Even though it spends more time above the long term average lately, the below average air can spill southward and cool some portions of the northern hemisphere. In the past month that was the US and western Europe.

A couple things to note: the Arctic was well below average before the blocking kicked in and spilled that air south this past month. Arctic ice was just 4% below the long term average for this time of year. IOW, the lack of Arctic ice last summer had nothing whatsoever to do with the present cooling. Finally you should notice from the graph above that the Arctic temperatures can swing 10C in a week or two. The total global warming estimated for the Arctic is maybe 2-3C. IOW, the CO2 warming is completely trivial compared to natural fluctuations.

Oh, and welcome to FR. Long time lurker?
