Sheriff says Ga. toddler killed by 7 dogs

A toddler who slipped outside through a doggie door was mauled to death by her family's seven dogs in the backyard while the attack went unnoticed by child's mother and other relatives inside their home, a southeast Georgia sheriff said Thursday.

Bryan County Sheriff Clyde Smith said the child's grandmother told investigators she was lying in bed when she heard the pit bulls and pit bull mixes barking, and she looked outside her window to see them dragging the girl. Smith said she began yelling, "They're killing Monica!"

I bet you had some type of protective device? A stick, club, a weight on a light chain, etc. Lots of Vets simply refuse to treat some of these dogs to avoid the liability. Sometimes the dogs bite the owner, sometimes they bite the staff—the money is not worth the risk and the multi-thousands of dollars paid out in lawsuits to the owners.

The checklist...

1) Large and/or aggressive breed of dog? Pit bull, the most common offender.

2) Running loose, often >1 running loose? Yes, the entire pack had the run of the place.

3) Previous reports of aggressive behavior? They “might have” killed a cat.

4) Unreasonable expectation of passivity from owner, often despite #3 above? Yes. They left an unsupervised toddler in with a pack of pit bulls.

Score = 3 out of 4 or 4 out of 4.

That is bizarre for a Sheltie. Of course, there is always the chance of an aberrant personality problem in any breed. I had a friend who bred and showed Shelties. When I visited her for the first time her 13 full grown dogs came out to greet me. They were intact males and females and I never saw one growl at another or me while I was there. As a stranger I was inundated with kisses, although a few were more aloof than others they too came around after a day.Three slept in bed with me. Beautiful breed.
I had two and they both loved babies. In fact my first thought he was a kid. He wanted to get on the school bus and actually trick-or-treated door to door with the kids. The whole neighborhood knew and loved him. He used to lay on the sofa with his head across the legs of our babies and they learned to walk by getting handfuls of long hair and walking behind him. Never growled or showed teeth to a human in his life.
There can always be a ‘bad’ dog in a breed. My aunt had a bi-polar cocker spaniel. As he got older he would get a crazy look in his eyes and snap at you if you petted him too long.
The trouble with pit bulls is there are so many BYB’s breeding fighting dogs that almost every pit bull alive has a violent ancestor still alive. It’s in the bloodline and I would no more trust a pit bull completely than I would a schizophrenic psychopath who is temporarily calm. And I like dogs more than most people.

This dog just wasn't as nice as some shelties I had, had up to that point. My first sheltie was very much like the ones you described. My nieces and nephews would come over and she was just fine with them. She dearly loved my late Father (who was not a dog person), and would cuddle next to him whenever he sat on the floor to watch t.v. When she died (liver cancer) he cried, and swore that he would never get that attached to an animal again.

I now have a corgi (first time with this breed), and he is just a sweetie. Loves people, not so much other dogs.

I take back two dogs, it was actually 3. The third one was a demon possessed wiener dog.

“My roommate grabbed the biggest carving knife in the drawer, ran outside, and promptly sunk it in the canine’s neck.”

DUDE! That’s impressive, good job.

Apparently, he had seen someone do it, years ago, and reacted in a heartbeat.

Yes, it was. Not sure I would have been so fast, to react, myself. It happened very quickly.

“Cesar is a showman honey”

No Cesar Milan is a professional dog trainer honey. Thats what he does. You and I and Mr. and Mrs America and the boyz in the Hood aren’t.

You cannot compare a Pitt Bull to a Shepherd or a Rottie breeds I am totally familiar with.

If we didn’t have them in GA my sister’s next door neighbor would not have had to shoot one last Sat when it came on their property and attacked and killed their kids pet goat. Thank God it didn’t go after the kid who was out in the yard.

17 states already have some kind of Pitt bull ban or regional restriction. Most if not all insurance companies refuse to issue homeowner’s insurance on properties with Pitt Bulls. They simply are not a companion animal. You cannot equate a Pitt to a German Shepherd or a Rottie. Not in a million years.

My choice would probably be one of the cast iron pans. Well, I’d like to think that, but in all reality I’d probably just do the horrified screaming thing.

I’m scared of dogs, I’ve liked some dogs I’ve known personally well enough, but pretty much I’m scared of them.

And just to show this fear is not entirely misplaced, I was once bitten (nipped really, pants torn, no broken skin) by a little fuzzy white dog owned by a little old b****, er, lady.

When I pointed out to her that her dog had just bitten me she said: What do you expect, you walked around behind me!

New York , New York, it’s a hell of a town!

I have another brother, who has a dog, a wife, and a child. The dog bit the kid when she was a toddler, but the wife/mother loved the dog more than her young daughter, she didn’t tell my brother, for fear he would give the dog away... They are a heck of a couple ;(
