Mike Rice fired at Rutgers after abusive behavior on practice tapes comes to light
The Star-Ledger ^ | 4-03-13 | Brendan Prunty

Mike Rice's three-year run at Rutgers has come to an end.

The university terminated Rice's contract this morning following a meeting with athletic director Tim Pernetti in his office at the Rutgers Athletic Center. Rice's job status became tenuous when videotapes of his actions during practices from his first and second years on campus were made public by ESPN's "Outside the Lines" program on Tuesday.

Rice was seen throwing basketballs at players — including one instance, throwing it at a player's head — as well as shoving players during a practice. He was also heard using the term "f------ faggot" at a player and using abusive language.

We played smear the q-word the same way. I always thought queer meant the guy with the football. Huh. Who knew?

When I was a kid all the kids on the block would play smear the queer

When I was growing up, before "dodge ball" was invented, we played a game called "dodge rocks".......

When I was a kid all the kids on the block would play smear the queer. Someone would throw a ball straight up and we would all try to catch it and run around the yard until we got tackled. Then that guy would throw the ball, and repeat.

Even in the late 70's the name for the game was being changed to "Kill the Carrier".

Now they’ll just call it, “Kill the Christian.”

“Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle! Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did, and it never will. Find out just what people will submit to, and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them; and these will continue until they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.” - Thomas Paine

He got fired because he was an idiot. Had any coach ever thrown something at my head as he did, rest assured he would not have needed to be fired..........

thank you! he is an ass... lacking in self-control... when i was a kid i had a coach for several years who i thought was "mean." and she was... she was scary... but i stayed on her team, because she also knew what she was doing, and we won championships... but she never laid her hands on us, or threw things at us... and she didn't call us belitting names... but hell, i did not want to be on her bad sad during practices... and no one ever wanted to show up late... i learned a lot from her...

Mike Rice behaved like a grown man in a bratty child's body... throwing tantrums... gosh--what a baby...

America is becoming a nation of butthurt pansies, like a protected child who couldn’t survive a week without “mommy” taking care of every need.

Woody Hayes would never stand a chance of coaching today.

PC run amok.

Where I came from they called this “despicable” behavior coaching.

I can picture a future Vince Lombardi stacking cans of corn in a supermarket because he called a linebacker a “p*ssy”.

I didn’t see anyone get hit in the head either. Maybe I didn’t see the entire video. It looked OK to me - but then I grew up in the early 60s with Catholic nuns.

That’s not coaching, it is bullying and abuse.
He is a disgrace to coaches everywhere.
FTR, he did throw at the head as well as other places.

So a supervisor calling an employee that term in your workplace is okay?

Throwing basketballs and all stuff at employees is okay?

If my coaches didn’t yell, scream, throw stuff and curse, something was usually wrong.

As a coach, I am not PC by any stretch of the imagination. I also tell the players parents in our first meeting that I am not PC and their kids are going to hear some colorful language, things they probably hear and say everyday at school and with their buddies.

The only time I was called on the carpet is when I called one of my players a p$**y for refusing to go into the corners to get the puck. I had to deal with the parent, the board and the coaches association. I had to apologize to the player, the parent and do it in front of the team. The kid never stepped on the ice for me again.

When the parent complained the next time and I had to meet with everyone, I explained that hockey is a very dangerous game and it is clear the player is afraid. I am just protecting him from getting injured. That’s why we practiced these drills over and over. The mom said I was targeting her son for retaliation. The board agreed with me.

A week later the mom called me and asked me what can I do to reinstate her son on the team. I told the mom she had to apologize to her child for putting him in this situation and apologize to me, the board and the coaches association for wasting our time.

She did. Never heard another word from her.

Thank you. It’s nice to read some sane comments on a thread otherwise devoted to ignorance.
