Auburn Man Facing Charges After Killing Bear In His Backyard
CBS Local (Boston) ^ | April 7, 2013 | Auburn CBS

Richard Ahlstrand told WBZ-TV he was stocking his bird feeder Friday night when a bear about seven feet tall and 300-to-400 pounds started chasing him.

That’s when he turned his shotgun on the bear.

“I didn’t have time to aim through the sights, but I aimed in the direction of the head on this thing and I pulled the trigger before it got to me. It just dropped,” he said.

Ahlstrand said he was carrying the shotgun Friday night because he thought he saw the bear in his yard Thursday.

“If that ever jumped on me, I wouldn’t even be here right know, I don’t think. I know it was going to seriously maul me,” he said.

Ahlstrand is now charged with illegally killing a bear, illegally baiting a bear, illegal possession of a firearm and failing to secure a weapon.

Authorities believed the female bear had cubs. Ahlstrand says he feels bad about that, but he believes he being unfairly labeled.

“They got me set up now like I’m some kind of murderer. And then the environmental guy told me ‘You should have called me instead of shooting it.’ What was I going to do, say ‘Mister Bear would excuse me please while I go make a phone call?’”

Police don’t believe the bear was a threat to people.

Now, if police don't seem to think a momma bear with cubs chasing someone might be a threat, then why in the hell do they shoot all those nice loveable little puppy dogs?

Heck, the biggest pit bull I have seen couldn't have been a third as tall as that cuddly momma bear, and would weigh in waay lighter to boot.

I’m hearing conflicting reports. The first said he had a shotgun with him when he went out to the bird feeder. The second suggests he saw the bear when he went out, went back to the house and returned to his backyard with a shotgun and shot the bear.

If he was surprised by the bear and had a shotgun in his hands, I certainly don’t blame him for shooting. If saw the bear, went inside to get his shotgun and then went back out, that’s hunting out of season without a license or poaching.

Shoot the golden retrievers and the dachshunds and the chihuahuas, for the goal of a cowed, quiet populace.

Let the Peasants imagine themselves in Fido’s place, and remember they serve The State!

I live in a neighborhood of 6 acre lots in woods; way out of town. My neighbor lady came over and, in her southern accent said, “I hit a turkey with my car. Brought him home and fried him right up. And, somebody kilt a dear up thar at the front. Sweet little thing. Backed up and put it in my trunk. You want some hamburger...Oh, no! It’re good. Weren’t no flies on it or nothin’.” So, if I shot a bear in my backyard, I’d walk over to Vivian’s and says, “Want a bear?” She’d say, “I hert you firin’. Was just commin’ to see. Drag his ass over here.”

Stocking a Bird Feeder is “Bear Baiting”?

The State is incredibly, hopelessly stupid (and indifferent).

Shooting a bear on your property isn’t hunting. It’s self-defense.

Police don’t believe the bear was a threat to people.

And, the bear was only a threat to this guy, not "people."

This guy doesn't count.

“Police don’t believe the bear was a threat to people.”

When Americans need for a policeman to have an opinion, they will give him one. Until such time, police are public servants, NOT issuers of mandatory advice/opinions to the public.

“Ahlstrand is now charged with illegally killing a bear, illegally baiting a bear, illegal possession of a firearm and failing to secure a weapon.”

Quite a collection of Taxachussetts violations, and deserving of a closer look.
1. Accused of illegally killing a bear. Basic charge, and the filing of it violates the man’s right to armed self defense. If the bear exhibited aggressive behavior, and such was the acused’s description of what happened, then the Masshole officials are violating this man’s Constitution guarantee to self defense and are so doing under color of law.
2. Since when is having a bird feeder “baiting a bear”??????
3. How possession of a long gun in ones home/home property can be defined as illegal escapes me. Obviously, I didn’t live in Taxachussetts long enough to understand the “Masshole Way”.
4.”Failing to secure a firearm?” He used it to shoot the bear! How can a ‘secured’ weapon be used to defend oneself?
Answer up, Massholes! Inquiring minds want to know.

The following is excerpted from Officer Friendly's Handy-Dandy Threat Matrix:

PERPETRATOR QUALIFIER THREAT STATUS PERMISSIBLE RESPONSE
Dog family pet threat (to police) shoot (police only)
Bear mother of cubs? NOT a threat (to non-police) DO NOT shoot (non-police only)

If someone can’t shoot a BEAR on his own property, there is something seriously wrong.

Don’t you know?

Bears are cute and cuddly and only want to have a small smackerel of honey before toddling off to visit piglets and rabbits...

This just in from the ASSociated Presstitutes:

It wasn’t a bear. It was an “undocumented omnivorous ursid”, and the shooter violated its civil rights.

I don’t think the auburn police or the MA EPA will see it that way if he had a chance to stay indoors after he saw it and went indoors to get his shotgun. I just drove through Auburn and I believe it’s homes with 1/4 acre lots, not a prudent place to be discharging a shotgun in a panic.
