Last lumber mill in Josephine County closes

Salem, OR – The Rough and Ready Lumber Company announced it is closing its Cave Junction sawmill. The mill, which provided 85 family wage jobs with benefits, has not been able to secure a sufficient supply of logs to remain competitive.

“Today is a very sad day for Josephine County,” said Senator Herman Baertschiger (R-Grants Pass). “The great tragedy is that the land surrounding this mill is full of timber, 2.7 million acres of timber. It is like starving in a grocery store and not being allowed to eat.”

A lumber mill can't get enough logs to process, all the while our federally controlled forests die off due to a bark beetle infestation.

Sums it up nicely although you can also add wildfires into the equation to follow the beetles.

Meanwhile the evirowhackos who shut down all the sawmills are living in their houses made of wood.

Sen. Ron Wyden is to blame for the closure. In his Senate committee he wouldn’t sign off on an agreement that would disallow environmentalist lawsuits which would be aimed at stopping any forest logging. R&R’s mill is set up for large diameter logs, and they couldn’t get the appropriate type of logs.

As far as Wyden sees it, there are more votes to be had in the Portland area (enviro votes) than in Josephine Co.

Too bad for the 85 families. They were sacrificed on the alter of Ron Wyden’s reelection campaign.

Thanks Twotone.

This has nothing to do with bark beetles, which affect lodgepole pine, which grows in central and eastern Oregon. Rough and Ready is located in southwesternmost Oregon, too far to truck lodgepole logs economically. They milled primarily Douglas fir, hemlock, cedar, spruce, and other west-side species.

Thanks, that is a much better explanation of why R&R had to close. I moved away from Oregon in 1985, and don’t follow the political scene there very closely.

This story personally saddens me, as I knew the family that ran the company (and had run it for 4 generations).

Yes, I too know the family. They are very responsible and caring. Ron Wyden screwed them.

If anyone wants to be on or off the Agenda 21 ping list, please notify me by Freepmail. It is a relatively low volume list in which we have been exploring the UN Agenda21 and related topics. We have collected our studies with threads, links, and discussions on the Agenda 21 thread which can be found here:

Post 128 of the Action Thread is a summary of the history of Agenda 21, “what they are doing”, “what to do about it” and a good bibliography for further reading.
