Man With Tourette Syndrome Barred From Flight (Kept Saying 'Bomb')
CBS Local ^ | April 29, 2013

A Maryland man with Tourette syndrome was barred from a JetBlue flight after repeatedly saying “bomb” during check-in.

Nineteen-year-old Michael Doyle of Rockville had been scheduled to fly Thursday from Reagan National Airport outside Washington to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

He told FOX 5 News that he brought paperwork documenting his illness in case he said anything to prompt a security concern. Tourette syndrome is a neurological disorder that can cause uncontrolled speech.

He estimated he said “bomb” as many as 100 times. He said as he became more nervous, the problem worsened.

The Transportation Security Administration let him board, but a JetBlue pilot kicked him off the plane before departure. The airline issued a statement saying the pilot initially had a security concern but later determined the situation was “innocuous.”

Poor thing was scared a muzzie might blow up the plane. I can’t blame him. That is a difficult illness to deal with. Bless his heart.

"...now all we need is a judge, prosecutor, defense lawyer, jury, and court reporter all with Tourette syndrome"

You know, what’s always puzzled me about this disorder has been why is it always swear words or trigger words that people say? Why aren’t there ever words like——SUNSHINE or LOVE or HELLO——or anything else that are just normal everyday words. That seems to also be the case with young children. All seem to be “blue” words or comments? Just curious.

Yeah, I think it’s perfectly fine to have someone crying out bomb, bomb, bomb during an airline flight - shouldn’t disturb the passengers or cause disruption or anything . . .

Shrink here. Over the years I’ve seen several personality-disordered patients who used the excuse of “Tourettes” to do all kinds of outlandish nonsense without being held accountable.

Maybe not this guy, but I’m just saying.

Sounds like the makings of a funny movie for Bill Murray.

There was a South Park episode where Cartman did exactly that.

I spent a few years as a kayak guide taking out disabled groups, everything from blind, to disabled vets, downs syndrome kids, etc.. One of the most memorable was a group of Tourette’s teenagers and young adults. They were a hoot and we all had a great time.

Can’t help but remembering a guy with Tourette syndrome selling Citrus fruit at the Ferry Landing opposite of Belchase, LA ... he was hilarious and sold tons to those of us in line... at first we thought he was faking but I observed him with no line, no customers and he was sorting his product with no one around or watching (cept me up on the levy) and he did not stop.

Always smiling and hard working and he knew we were laughing at him because of the timing of his outbursts was so unpredictable... (sometimes midstream of a word), it was sad and you felt for the guy but seriously if you were there it was hilarious (tried not to laugh and I was not able, so maybe I have something wrong with me) and he just smiled through it all, never apologized ... if you had young kids in the car you may have elected to drive around to NOLA or take the bridge cause it was definitely XXX rated.

TT

It reminds me of this exchange from What About Bob?

Siggy: Butthead!

Bob Wiley: Dingleberry butt!

Siggy: Snot face!

Bob Wiley: Vulture Vomit!
