We recently did a head-to-head comparison of the benefits of living in California versus those for Texas.
California won by a hair.
The impetus for the piece was the burgeoning rivalry between the two states, which heated up after Texas Gov. Rick Perry ran a series of ads touting his state's friendlier business climate.
But we wanted to narrow in a bit more on all the things California has to offer that Gov. Perry may have ignored. To be clear, we have nothing against Texas some of us are products of their finest schools.
We just think people need to be reminded that the Golden State still has a lot going for it.
1) California has lower property tax rates.
The average is 0.80%, compared with Texas' 1.74%.

2) College graduation rates there are impressive.
California graduates 34.8% of its college students in four years, and 65.1% in six. Compare that with 24.4% and 49.0%, respectively, for Texas.

3) Students get better SAT scores (though slightly fewer take them).
The average California high school student's score is 1513. In Texas it's 1446.

4)The state is above average in terms of children enrolled in day care.
Just 39% of kids are not enrolled in child care in California. In Texas? 44%.

5) If you're a Californian, you're less likely to die.
The 2010 mortality rate for California was 646.8 per 100,000. In Texas it's 772.3.

Property tax rates are low only if you lived in California before Prop 13. If you moved there after it’s 2% of the purchase price of the house. When I lived in Thousand Oaks I was paying $3200 a year and my neighbors $385.
IIRC, Cali has income taxes. Texas does not (somebody correct me if my memory is incorrect!).
That makes the property tax issue moot.
All of this proves that figures never lie- but liars figure
“If you’re a Californian, you’re less likely to die. “
Odd. I thought mortality was 100%...
What this article REALLY says is “California is more liberal, don’t you WANT to live here?” My answer, from Arizona, is “Hell no!”
Mr. Wile seems like just another california homosexual blogger advocate.
Smart business should be exiting california. Stockholders should be holding boards accountable to ESCAPE CALIFORNIA.
That’s a good one. Reminds me of a meeting I was in a while ago and a guy said, “We have customers. They die. It’s a 1:1 relationship, and nobody has been able to get out of it yet.”
Comparison is pure BS.
We’ll keep my guns and 0 income tax rate, they can keep all their nuts, fruits and flakes....thank you.
FWIW, I wouldn’t trade a single square foot of south, or west, Texas desert for the whole damn state of Commiefornia.
SAT scores? In order to have an SAT score you actually have to write the SAT’s. How many gang members in the barrios of L.A. and the Oakland hood ever write an SAT? Number is skewed because of dropout rates in California and because of a significant asian population that places a high priority on education. If not for the asian community California would already be past the point of no return.
4)The state is above average in terms of children enrolled in day care.
Just 39% of kids are not enrolled in child care in California. In Texas? 44%.
That’s right: We can’t approve of states where kids are raised by their own mothers.
I’m mystified. Why is more kids in daycare something to crow about?
Sorry, this is REALLY a Stretch!C=I was born in Santa Monica in 1950.I spent the first 39-years of my life there.California isn’t ANYTHING like what it was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We don’t need no stinkin’ California (mexican accent)
So stay there, CA lovers! With that attitude, we’d be talking about The Horse You Rode In On pretty soon...
I can make up crap to...
80% of California can’t read, write or speak English
67% of Californians have herpes.
66% of Californians believe gay sex is the only sex
2% of Californians believe in God
77% of Californians believe sex with animals is a right
69% of Californians have aborted more than one baby
88% of Californians believe that Obama is really Jesus
22% of Californians have a high school diploma
Business Insider is s sleazey leftist anti-business rag.
No surprise that they favor totalitarian fascist socialism.
To all my liberal California friends: I was recently forced to move to Texas. This article is 100% correct. California is a paradise. Texas is nasty, dirty, and dangerous. The rednecks are everywhere and they shoot at anything that moves, ESPECIALLY cars with California license plates! Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, is poisonous, even the BUTTERFLIES. It is backwater, racist, smelly place with NO culture, NO arts, and NO outdoor beauty. This place is just plain NASTY. DON'T COME HERE, you will regret it!!!
PS To any remaining conservatives in California, please read between the lines...
True, because California citizens were Draconianly overtaxed in 1978 that they passed by initiative Proposition 13, which controlled the rise in valuation and tax (not fees) by Constitutional amendment, defeating near all politicians powers over property tax. Without 13 CA property tax would be ten times what people pay now. It's one of the few times the DemoRat crooks have been controlled in CA.
Well, I’m sold. I think all lib bastards should go to kalifornication. Much more efficient that way.
Don’t come to Texas. It really sucks here.
In a related statistic (just made up by me), 37% of 18-25 year old minority males in California have state sponsored adult supervision (city, county, state or Federal correctional institution), rather than under the influence of their [non-existent] fathers.
This is as opposed to Texas, where the 62.387% of same demographic is influenced by their parents.
