Bad Reviews for Patron at Restaurant in Mexico

MEXICO CITY — Andrea Benítez simply did what many rich, connected Mexicans have always done: she used her influence to step on the lower born. Witnesses said that when she was not given the table she wanted on Friday at Maximo Bistrot, a popular Mexico City restaurant, she called in inspectors who worked for her father at the country’s main consumer protection agency to shut it down.

“Dreadful service,” she wrote on Twitter, before announcing she had arrived at the agency to complain. “They have no manners.”

What followed, however, caught much of Mexico by surprise. Instead of enjoying the perks of privilege, Ms. Benítez and her father have become the targets of a broad and swift social media campaign — with tens of thousands of Tweets condemning them — that led the president’s office on Monday to announce a formal investigation into allegations of abuse of power.

This kind of response, it must be said, is exceedingly rare in Mexico. Murders are routinely ignored by the authorities here, and increasingly by senior officials who would prefer to discuss other topics. But the food at Maximo Bistrot apparently has the capacity to ignite public rage and government action like little else.

To many of its fans, the restaurant is the Chez Panisse of Mexico City, a gastro-paradise of fresh ingredients delivered with innovation for (relatively) affordable prices,

Maybe she should have called upon her cartel contacts to take care of the problem. Nothing like getting shot and beheaded works better at improving morale in the kitchen.

Mexicans are not Americans by a long shot. Some, after a long period of time can fit in. Here in Texas, people of Mexican decent that go back to the days of “Texicans” are as American as apple pie. But Mexicans that have been brought up in Mexico are not the type of people that will easily assimilate in to our culture. For the illegals that have come here from Mexico it will take many of them generations to become “Americanized”. Maybe, and that is a big maybe.

The dirty little secret is that the majority of Mexicans like free stuff. They are very happy to come here and mooch off the gringos. Why? Because that does not happen in their country. For example, consider that America has nearly 2 million nonprofits. Years back a number of them, including bleeding heart religious groups ventured in to Mexico and like drunks standing on a Mardi Gras float they showered poor Mexicans with all sorts of free stuff. The Mexicans figure out quickly that the land of the gringo was the land of freebies. Some, the really bad ones, found that the US was the land of easy pickings. Just take what you want.

Back to the nonprofits issue. Do you know how many nonprofit entities there are in Mexico? I’m not referring to the US nonprofits I’m referring to Mexican nonprofits that have been formed in Mexico by Mexicans. With the goal to give stuff to the poor. How many do you think there are? If the US has 1.5 to 2 million nonprofits guess how many there are in Mexico. 100,000? 500,000? Nope. Essentially there are zero. Nada. None. The notion of charity in the Mexican culture is virtually nonexistent. This is why when they see they can get free $hit in the US they jump the fence and swim the river.

We are idiots. Morons in this country for allowing people that have never done anything here to come here and take from us. Hell, our insane politicians go farther than that. They GIVE them what they won’t give most Americans. For what? Votes someday and for nothing else. That is the only upside for the US politicians, votes. Because ignorant and poor Mexicans will never be anything but loadstones on our economy. Sure, some can cut grass or drive a nail or paint but they will almost to a person be a taker out of the US economy and not a giver.

The gringos are a joke to most Mexicans. Ask any descendent of Mexicans that have been here themselves for generations. If you think what I just wrote is bad you should hear them. They can’t stand the illegals.

In a distantly related experience, I’ve donated about 50-60 pints of blood in my life; I used to donate at work. I’ve worked in the Home Office of three Fortune 100 companies with 4-5000 employees in each of those locations. I could put all the non-white donors I’ve ever seen in my car.

I have to believe it’s cultural but I simply don’t understand why virtually all the donors I’ve ever seen are white.

Where's John Cleese when you need him?

"You bastards! You vicious, heartless bastards! Look what you've done to him! He's worked his fingers to the bone to make this place what it is, and you come in with your petty feeble quibbling and you grind him into the dirt, this fine, honourable man, whose boots you are not worthy to kiss. Oh... it makes me mad... mad!"

Even more rare in the US.

Thanks for your insight. I am always amazed at the explosion in the non-profit sector here. The charity sector too. I call it the do-gooder sector. China may have taken much of our manufacturing but the do-gooder sector is doing just fine. It’s a great business and great salary if you are in the right NGO. Female and gay oriented, leftist oriented too as far as who works in them. Amazing how these parasites have carved out this huge new (kinda) niche for themselves

Of course many charities are good and worthwhile, many religious ones are. But many are there to provide salaries and self-aggrandizement for those who work there. So many 100% bogus charities around too.

Thanks for your insight.

We should have nonprofit charities. The criteria should be simple, they can exist if they clothe, feed or house human beings. That's it.

Did you know that Consumer's Union, the entity that publishes "Consumers Reports" is a nonprofit. Yep, their postage is subsidized by taxpayers. The last time I checked they had about $90,000,000 in the bank.

How about the Anti Defamation League? The ADL. They pay their handler, Abe Foxman over $400,000 a year. For what? Running around saying how "insert name here" hates Jews. Interesting, eh? Remember Oskar Schindler? He saved over a 1,000 humans in WWII. He died without a cent. But old Abe is a rich man who could not hold Oskar Schindler's coat.

I could go on and on about the abuse of US nonprofit laws.

We have an out-of-control epidemic in the country when it comes to nonprofits. Way too many are in business to enrich their handlers, push a political agenda or to simply drive commercial corporations out of business by competing directly with them at times.
